Why arn't us women allowed a voice?

How petty.
Etsy is awash with Harry Potter merch. Bet there's copyright infringement aplenty there if JKR was similarly petty.
Maybe we should report all the genuinely hateful items and see if Etsy remove those too?

WarOnWomen · 08/10/2020 23:12

Like this:

ErrolTheDragon · 08/10/2020 23:32

The mail article says Etsy have reinstated the items following the backlash.

Hopefully QuirkyStitchCrafty will pick up some extra customers after this debacle .... Etsy might lose a few.

help.etsy.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new?segment=shopping&ticket_form_id=360000108008#issue_account_harassment_discrimination We can complain here but I think CEO needs a complaint tbh.
Blood boiling!

Needmoresleep · 08/10/2020 23:40

I continue to be astonished at the aggressive, wide ranging and persistent response to JK Rowlings carefully worded and considered statement.

She is very brave.

I've asked her for a website link in case Etsy take her down again.

Quaagars · 09/10/2020 01:03

Oh Gawd.
I'm a huge Harry Potter fan
Just another wrote: 'How can products proclaiming love for a world-renowned philanthropist be hate speech'.*
come onnn, context surely.
Why is it that hard to understand with some of the quotes and some of the comments

Needmoresleep · 09/10/2020 01:28

I don’t understand the pp.

The context surely is the clear and thoughtful statement JK wrote, and which many seem to have decided to ignore. Chanting ‘hate’ seems easier an d requires less thought.

Had 8 products in my etsy basket before seeing this thread. My money will be going to redbubble now.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 09/10/2020 06:53

I stopped using etsy years ago when I reported some particularly threatening terfstomper badges and didn't get anything back, including their removal (I think they are finally gone now, but it has been years - and there's plenty more 'fuck terfs' stuff - although at least on a quick search right now there's none explicitly threatening violence any more (thank god for small mercies huh?)

Anyhow, given what they do allow, it's clearly a political statement I disagree with to remove I heart JK stuff, so my boycott continues

SunsetBeetch · 09/10/2020 06:58

Oh, cross post Treeastumps

Yes but now I want to support QuirkyStitchCrafty - & carry on buying from Wild Womyn Workshop, obviously!

The government have stated that schools must now teach that cancel culture is bullying and is unacceptable, harmful and damaging to society.

Something which most people automatically agree with.

Realising that schools must take some responsibility is perhaps acknowledging that it's a youth led movement.

So hopefully, as time goes on, 'cancelling' will acquire the wholesale negative critiquing it deserves.

Datun · 09/10/2020 07:52

Ugh I've just read they sell child sex dolls.

FairFriday · 09/10/2020 08:12

@printful have just ditched items with the dictionary definition of woman because several people have had a tantrum.

TweeBree · 09/10/2020 08:24

I spend around £50/month on there. Will avoid now.

goldrabbit22 · 09/10/2020 08:42

No more stuff from Etsy for me.

They and companies like them really should grow a pair.

FairFriday · 09/10/2020 08:43

Or Printful. They can all go to hell.

Beamur · 09/10/2020 08:58

Datun
My DD came home from school yesterday where they had talked about cancel culture (and why it's a bad thing) Grin in the lesson! Baby steps but good news.

That IS good news. Very heartening.

That is such progress in this dark age. Enlightenment!

EarthSight · 09/10/2020 09:12

I was going to say that they shouldn't be poking that bear - a silly amount of people make a living illegally from her work that tramples all over copyright, and I can bet a lot of them are on social media platforms and places like Etsy.

Datun · 09/10/2020 09:15

Here is the quote from the Department for education.

"Explain the harm caused by 'cancel culture' and the importance of freedom of speech and freedom of association to a tolerant and free society.

"Teach that censorship and 'no platforming' are harmful and damaging.

"Explain that seeking to get people 'cancelled' (e.g. having them removed from their position of authority or job) simply because you disagree with them, is a form of bullying and is not acceptable."

This is OT, but there a couple of UK based alternatives to etsy that seem to have quite a firm grip on sexually explicit stuff, and those nasty pants would not be allowed to stay. Etsys mostly factories now, the days of handmade are pretty much over. I used to be a seller, couldn't compete with the factories so moved.
Try folksy or not on the high street for your stuff instead.

Sorry for derail!
