Labour losing women

iguanadonna · 02/10/2020 20:48

Is it possible to find out how many female members Labour has lost over the last couple of years?

I imagine their membership has fallen quite a bit overall what with one thing and another, but I wonder whether women have been more likely to go.

Personally I left some while ago. Told them I felt I had to since I think humans have two reproductive sexes and I understand that's incompatible with their inclusive ethos. No reply.

Nothing has improved since and I keep seeing women saying they've left.

(But kudos to the women staying to fight. I can't do anything active at the moment so felt like I was giving tacit approval to the female erasure and exclusion of fabulous feminists.)

FoI?

hesaidshesaidwhat · 02/10/2020 20:51

I doubt they could tell you, they don't even know what a woman is!

True, of course the data they have will be 'people of either sex who call themselves women' not female party members. But nonetheless.

I get the impression things are improving a bit since the days of the 'Labour Against Transphobia' movement that tried to evict feminists from the party.

PronounssheRa · 02/10/2020 21:15

They have the Labour Campaign for Trans Rights now instead, with the manifesto which called Woman’s Place UK a trans-exclusionist hate group and demanded that women are expelled.

This pledge was signed a little over 6 months ago by all the leadership contenders apart from starmer. I really don't think things are better and won't be for some time

OhHolyJesus · 02/10/2020 21:17

I think the numbers of signatures for the Labour Womens pledge would be an indication not of those who left but do those who stay to fight.

There are similar factions in all of the main parties as well as WEP and Greens.

I left shortly after Corbyn became leader. The decision had nothing to do with trans issues/women's rights and all to do with Corbyn being a useless, deluded, hypocritical Marxist.

Starmer will have to weed out Momentum before I will ever consider voting Labour again.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/10/2020 23:46

I did explain to the chair of my CLP exactly why I was leaving but it just wasn't on his radar.

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 03/10/2020 20:04

Not Labour - but in my membership resignation letter to the Lib Dem’s, the word ‘penis’ came up quite a lot - pun intended...

they wanted all the women expelled? from the Labour party?
nauticant · 03/10/2020 20:27

They were calling for non-compliant women to be expelled. Those who wouldn't subscribe to an anti-science belief system.

thanks
Helmetbymidnight · 03/10/2020 20:39

im on a Labour party thread on fb about marsha de cordovas equality act, and im really heartened about the pushback from women. loads of them saying her omission of sex was ridiculous/sinister. and only three or four idiots calling 'terf'.
the tide is turning.

That's quite terrifying! So what became of it? Especially seeing as Starmer was voted as their leader?
Mandalalorianna · 03/10/2020 20:48

I sent my membership card back explaining why (about summer 2018). Not heard from them since.

ImaSababa · 03/10/2020 20:57

Lots of formerly Labour-voting women I know have decamped to the Communist Party - the only party on the Left to recognise biological sex.

GreyShadow · 03/10/2020 21:08

@hesaidshesaidwhat

Haha spot on!

smithsinarazz · 03/10/2020 21:33

I THINK things may be changing since the dark days of the "hate group" accusations. It seems to be a "live" issue in many constituencies, mine included. And perhaps the two most egregiously awful TRAs, Nadia "pursue the ringleaders " Whittome and Lloyd Russell-Moyle, have both been sacked - for different reasons.
But until women who have been refused membership of the LP for not believing the dogma receive an apology, the Party will not have recovered.

Winner! 😆👍
Vargas · 03/10/2020 21:48

An interesting question. Unfortunately I think this is still a topic that a lot of people aren't aware of. Many of my RL friends have no idea what Labour's stance on women's vs trans rights is.

I will certainly not be voting Labour until they figure out the difference between sex and gender...but I really can't stomach voting Tory. And as for the Lib Dems- ha, no way.

PronounssheRa · 03/10/2020 22:15

So what became of it?

Members of Parliament that signed the pledge

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Salford and Eccles
Angela Rayner, Ashton-under-Lyne
Lisa Nandy, Wigan
Karl Turner, East Hull
Nadia Whittome, Nottingham East
Dawn Butler, Brent Central
Emily Thornberry, Islington South and Finsbury
Alex Sobel, Leeds North West
Zarah Sultana, Coventry South
Clive Lewis, Norwich South
Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Tooting

Labour Campaign for Trans Rights now have Marsha in their sights and are demanding and apology and they have an NEC manifesto.

They aren't going away anytime soon.

ThatLibraryMiss · 03/10/2020 23:26

I resigned in May last year, but not because of feminist/trans issues - I gave two reasons: their inability to unite behind their democratically elected leader, whether they liked him or not, remembering that they're supposed to be opposing the government not their own party, and their inability to give a clear message on Brexit in the local and European elections.

I didn't expect a good response but I was very disappointed to get one that was basically, "When you come to your senses you can rejoin."

I was a lifelong active Labour supporter and had been a member for about 20 years by then. I have no regrets about leaving. The party has no place for me.

menimen · 03/10/2020 23:36

There have been several hashtags as people announced an intention to leave labour.
I do not recall any of them amounting to much more than bluster.

I meant what became of their calling for non-compliant women to be expelled
PronounssheRa · 04/10/2020 10:28

Since that pledge, I'm not sure, but there has been an on going 'campaign' to expel non compliant women from the party and women have been expelled as a result.

Women have also been prevented from joining including Karen Ingala Smith just a couple of months ago kareningalasmith.com/2020/06/27/why-i-was-rejected-for-labour-party-membership-and-my-response/
