Agreed JamieLeeCurtains - and that's precisely what the new guidelines insist on.

BolloxtoGender · 28/09/2020 22:25

Yep. It’s not that hard. Some people are just wilfully twisting its meaning or just plain lacking in comprehension skills, and if these are teachers, they really shouldn’t be teaching.

jj1968 · 28/09/2020 22:25

No, they go a bit further than that, or would if they were mandatory. They wouldn't just prevent XR or those trained by them to deliver education in schools, but any group which had expressed public support for XR, or any other group which advocated civil disobedience.

jj1968 · 28/09/2020 22:28

So Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace for example: www.thirdsector.co.uk/friends-earth-greenpeace-back-extinction-rebellion-protests/communications/article/1582498

Friends of the Earth do do some work in schools, although not delivering RSE obviously, but its a worrying trend all the same.

jj1968 · 28/09/2020 22:31

The TUC have also supported the Global Climate Strike which would probably mean they would fall foul and their school programme would be prohibited as well.

That's why some people on the left frothed about this. If these guidelines were mandatory it would be a very worrying step. It's worrying anyway.

Thanks for all the helpful refs for letter writing on the thread- looking forward to reading it all!

You haven't read that teaching controversial issues guidance have you JJ ? Never mind - you've done us all a great favour in allowing us to explore so many aspects of the new guidance.
Age appropriate factual SRE
No more reinforcing gender stereotypes
No more one sided special interest groups
Schools using due diligence to ensure groups and individuals have appropriate online presence
No engaging in the cancel culture
Evidence based SRE (no playing fast and loose with stats)
And so much more.
This will be such a good thread to keep as a resource - so much useful information here.

Aesopfable · 28/09/2020 22:35

No political organisation or ideas are allowed to be taught in schools without balance being provided. That is laid out in law. The guidance simply reinterates this.

Serious question, assuming these guidelines became mandatory and were extended across education provision rather than just RSE would you support the TUC being banned from schools based on their support for the School Strike, or Friends of the Earth for supporting XR?
BolloxtoGender · 28/09/2020 22:37

As a parent, nope , not worried about this, I see this as a necessary counter balance to start over turning the worrying trends of woke ideologies in schools. I’m more worried about the indoctrination of woke to the young, Mermaids, Atonewall, BLM, ANti-racist, anti science, lack of critical thinking and generally being taught ‘right think’ and being outraged, angry and intolerant towards differences in opinions.

No it goes much further. Organisations could be banned for opinions which have nothing to do with what they are in the schools to teach. Friends of the Earth don't go into schools teaching or preaching civil disobedience, they do things like talking about sustainable energy. But they would still be banned based on their public support for XR.

You're worried about the young being indoctrinated into anti-racism? Okay, I think we can see the sort of direction the GC movement is starting to travel.
persistentwoman · 28/09/2020 22:42

It takes a lot of time planning lessons when you're teaching citizenship, politics etc but teachers become very skilled in managing balance. Schools facilitate sessions with all sorts of speakers -politicians, union officers, charities etc. It's about ensuring balance and offering children alternative viewpoints. That's why the guidelines are so helpful in essentially booting out the #nodebate, if girls won't undress in front of boys they're bigots groups and reiterating that children are entitled to balanced alternative views - not gaslighting.

BolloxtoGender · 28/09/2020 22:43

Yes jj, you should maybe go ‘educate yourself’ as to what the issues are around Robin DaAngelo s book.

Yes but if groups like FoE, Greenpeace and the TUC were banned from speaking in schools then there wouldnt be much balance would there? That was kind of the point when the guidelines were criticised as an attack on free speech.
BolloxtoGender · 28/09/2020 22:45

The gaslighting of using divisive language of ‘white people’, ‘white supremacy’ etc..

persistentwoman · 28/09/2020 22:47

You're very overwrought about all this JJ?
The guidelines merely return the balance and remind schools of their core responsibilities. Politicians, unions and lobby groups will still be invited in on occasions to schools as part of children's learning experiences. But the lobby groups won't be able to use children as vessels to be filled with their personal ideology and they won't be able to sell porn soaked, age inappropriate, sexualised packages to schools any more. Schools have to exercise due diligence and check everything first.
And quite right too.

You're worried that schools might indoctrinate kids to be anti-racist because you don't like a book?
JamieLeeCurtains · 28/09/2020 22:48

It's all about BALANCE not bans.

Let teachers do their professional training and jobs without fear of being disciplined or sacked for not promoting a particular special interest lobby.

Let teachers teach BALANCE. On the one hand this, on the other hand that ... let's look at the empirical evidence ... what does this tell us? ... [Age appropriate] Who owns this evidence? How is that? ... Can you debate the opposing view?

No-one in banned. But materials will be freely scrutinised.

jj1968 · 28/09/2020 22:49

They will now, but if these guidelines were to be made law, and extended across education, then that could realistically see trade unions banned from schools. That is not restoring balance, it's a right wing coup. Do you support that?

BolloxtoGender · 28/09/2020 22:49

Do you even know what ‘anti-racist’ means or what the opposite of it is? Beyond ‘anti-racist’ seemingly is an inherently good thing because the word so self evidently says so.

Do we get a memorial squirrel if this thread reaches 1000? 🐿

persistentwoman · 28/09/2020 22:51

Schools have one main focus - the education and welfare of children. The demands of political groups for access to speak to children will always be balanced and take second place to children's actual needs.
