People can be same sex attracted. People can’t change sex. Why do these things keep getting conflated?
Could it be to muddy the waters, so to speak?

jj1968 · 26/09/2020 20:42

@FloralBunting

Although I doubt that will mean jj will stop posting about their sudden concerns about an announcement they were shrugging off as nothing earlier.

I kind of thought it was nothing tbh, then when I was trying to get to sleep last night I couldn't stop thinking about the potential implications of the non-gender related guidelines. Then I woke up and saw a load of teachers complaining about them on twitter which I why I raised it on this thread.

We currently have a very right wing Tory government with a large majority. That's no secret or conspiracy, although I think it's been a bit obscured by Covid. Truss, along with Raab and Patel wrote the notorious Britannia Unchained document. She also runs a think tank which has called for scrapping gender pay gap reporting, making it easier to sack people and weakening workplace protections for disabled people amongst other things. I really hope that the conflict over trans rights does not obscure people on both sides to what this government is likely to get up to.

You could knit a jumper which says 'clitoral violence' in the front (or the back or the sleeves) by using the intarsia technique. It works better with the English method, Fair Isle works better with the Continental method.

Knitting in the round is what you also use for knitting socks and gloves, but usually with five needles rather than with two connected ones.

All this has to do with female sex roles today but in the past was more gender neutral information as certain farming communities used knitting to make extra income in the winter, so men and boys knitted, too.

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2020 20:46

Not sure why you think its any different to what will happen to all of us if The Equality Act is undermined or abolished.

The gender war is not a left or right wing war, any more than patriarchy was ever left or right wing.

I don't want to see the Equality Act undermined or demolished. I bet Liz Truss does though. Because that is a left/right issue. Much of the Equality Act is about workplace rights.

Some teachers will be unhappy about this. The young ones just out of university who have been gaslit into believing that cancel culture is a good thing and that women have penises. Lots of parents have cite schools who have actively encouraged their children into 'changing sex' in secret and failed to work to safeguarding / Working Together principles. Remember how a school was bullied by a lobby group into forcing unwilling girls to share toilets and changing rooms with a teenage boy self identifying as a girl? :
www.transgendertrend.com/tag/gina-denham/

This is why the government have taken this action - so that children and schools can be protected from political activists seeking to inappropriately influence them.

Wow I hadn't heard of this particular incident. That is shocking. Bullying companies, organisations and places of education via twitter needs to become unacceptable.

The objections from teachers I saw were not complaining about the gender guidelines or the cancel culture guidelines but the ones I quoted, in particular with reference to BLM and the debate over state institutions relationship with the legacy of colonialism. The Tories are playing a much bigger game than those engaged in the trans debate, and these guidelines reflect that.

😆

I really should put more effort into sincerity, as you're clearly really working hard here. It's not a huge surprise, obviously. The Anti-Woman and anti-safeguarding activism has finally come up against an opposition with teeth, and what do they have now but chucking mud in a scattershot, hoping some sticks?
I'm sure developments will have kept many up at night, and I'm also sure them as still post and get their lead from Twitter outrage will be among them. I deleted Twitter some time ago, and my teacher friends are delighted. And I sleep very soundly. 👍

persistentwoman · 26/09/2020 21:21

It was shocking SunsetBeetch . No school wants that sort of pressure and allegations of transphobia being made. Just like all the bullying of JKR - it's the repeated intimidation to ensure that everyone complies and nobody dares to challenge the orthodoxy and it's been frighteningly successful.

Datun · 26/09/2020 21:22

Oh, it's all over the shop. Transparent, reactionary bollocks. And everyone can see it.

It's tedious.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 26/09/2020 21:24

Very tedious

jj1968 · 26/09/2020 21:26

I'm not talking about the gender stuff, but never mind. This is interesting for people on here though, in the new guidelines they talk about recommended resources which can be used in RSE lessons saying:

26.A list of some of the resources, which are available free-of-charge, can be found in Annex B

The list in Annex B includes "LGBT inclusivity: Stonewall lesson plans and materials for primary and secondary".

I guess Stonewall's finance department will be able to sleep at night then.

They have been show up in a bad light. The my should be out.

OldCrone · 26/09/2020 21:35

www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education/annex-b-resources-for-relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

That page is dated 9th July.

persistentwoman · 26/09/2020 21:38

Transhgender Trend did a very detailed analysis of some of the regressive material found in allegedly 'inclusive SRE materials.
They found that "‘LGBT inclusive’ resources focus on the ‘T’ and teach the concept of ‘gender identity’ as a fact rather than a belief. We show how identity and Queer politics and ‘sex positive’ feminism are linked as one movement and how this movement promotes unsafe sexual practices and commercialised sex, putting pressure on girls and silencing those who disagree"
Hopefully there is little of that in any recommended materials but as every organisation has been regulatory captured by the boys can have periods lobby it will no doubt take some time to ensure that materials for children are child centred, factual and free from queer theory.

Tedious, but a little bit...hilarious? Don't mean to sound frivolous or dismissive. It's just that when someone else is on the back foot, and then the other foot, then the other foot, I feel vindicated. I feel happy and RIGHT. Keep going, yon naysayer. Keep it up. I'm loving it. So much time scrolling through lists and annexes.

The Stonewall find? Good on ya. Excellent work there. And if within the new D of E guidelines, we are fine with that.

persistentwoman · 26/09/2020 21:38

Ooops - forgot the link:

www.transgendertrend.com/launch-rse-guide-schools/

moptophairshop · 26/09/2020 21:41

The Stonewall link is for a resource pack called 'Different families, same love' which is a nice resource for things like Happy Mother's day cards to colour with a picture of two mums. That's it.

Oddly enough, the responses from teachers on the TES have been overwhelming positive with many people expressing relief that safeguarding is at the forefront of the guidance.

FloralBunting · 26/09/2020 21:45

jj keep on keeping on. You're completely welcome to post your evangelism on FWR, as ever. I believe strongly in the freedom of religion and freedom of speech, so have at it.

I'm sure someone else will happily engage you, but I've done my stint with religious people. Best of luck convincing the women here that government advice to schools and teachers to do their jobs properly, and end they've spent a long time campaigning for, is a really bad thing that only right wing bigots approve of. I'm off for another drink, lush that I am. Evenin'

OldCrone · 26/09/2020 21:49

The Stonewall link which is supposed to go to lesson plans goes to this page:

www.stonewall.org.uk/resources/different-families-same-love-pack

There's nothing there (except a pdf of cards and stickers for mother's day and father's day).

jj1968 · 26/09/2020 21:51

@OldCrone

And referenced in the guidelines just released. I presume the authors of the guidelines checked who they were recommending given using external agencies forms a large part of the new rules. And the only organisation they recommend relating to LGBT issues is Stonewall. So presumably they are not being kicked out of education.

We had this type of thing on the mid 70s. I distinctly remember it.

We didn’t have this for kids with disabilities or additional needs, so the boy with - what we now know is - dyslexia was written off as ‘slow’, or for single parents, so the boy with the unmarried mum - a rare thing back there and then - was ashamed of it.

Yes but the guidelines are quite clear, they recommend Stonewall lesson plans and materials for primary and secondary schools, not just what's on that webpage.

So why didn't they link to this page instead of one with nothing on it?

www.stonewall.org.uk/best-practice-toolkits-and-resources-0

It's not particularly useful to link to a nearly empty page, unless either that's the only part they think is acceptable, or they want people to go elsewhere.
