This is great news! Well done and thanks to all those who made their voices heard Thanks

MichelleofzeResistance · 24/09/2020 16:41

It'sallgoing that is great! They've got it haven't they? Message received, loophole shut. I'd have preferred a clear mention of safeguarding policy compatible with the school's safeguarding policy taking priority at all times, but its a huge step towards solving the biggest issues.

Tootsweets23 · 24/09/2020 16:42

This is what I'd hoped the tories would do - clear guidance for schools, reject self ID, next guidance for prisons and NHS, then more for charities and quangos. All reinforcing the law in a language people can understand rather than leave leeway for gender = sex to weedle its way in.

Chrysanthemum5 · 24/09/2020 16:42

That's good does it apply to the whole of the UK?

BovaryX · 24/09/2020 16:43

That is brilliant news. It seems like they have actually listened to the criticisms of this and are explicit about identifying them. About time.

StandUpStraight · 24/09/2020 16:43

This is bloody brilliant, thanks so much for sharing. It is so clear, and I particularly love the express warning not to work with organisations that produce such materials. That’s broader than “don’t use the materials”. That’s “have nothing to do with them”.

Mollyollydolly · 24/09/2020 16:44

This is such brilliant news. Mermaids response is interesting - they are flapping about a lot. Shout out to the people that made this happen - Kelly Jay shouting at parents to write to their schools and MPs I suspect had quite an impact and TransgenderTrend have done an amazing job.

Just England AFAIK Sad

@MichelleofzeResistance

Who wrote that piece of straightforward common sense in plain English???!

Find them and promote them immediately! Do not let them get away, that's a gift rare anywhere in govt at the moment.

Fantastic DFE message today. Finally.

Thanks for sharing OP Grin

Datun · 24/09/2020 16:48

I honestly don't know how mermaids can agree that gender stereotypes have nothing to do with it, when their own training asks children to pick from a GI Joe or a Cinderella, they demonstrate gender identity using pink and blue jelly babies and Susie greens own TEDTalks says she took her son to the doctor for playing with the wrong toys, all of which were subsequently removed from the house!

The denial is extraordinary.

What's wonderful is that no one can now bang on about boy babies turning their baby grows into dresses, and girl children pulling clips from their hair as a demonstration of being trans.

It really is, the crystal clear language, the opening sentence and its reference to biological sex, the repudiation of gender stereotypes. This is a great result.

I know. I'm quite astounded.
TheElementsOfMedical · 24/09/2020 16:52

Brilliant!

Chrysanthemum5 · 24/09/2020 16:52

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine I will hold out a faint hope that Scotland will follow this - but it's only a faint one, the SNP are very woke

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/09/2020 16:53

Ah, but...

So, if toys and clothes are so irrelevant, why would parents of trans children sometimes use them to explain their journey? Our CEO, Susie Green has done just that in the past so we asked her:

“I think parents struggle sometimes to explain how their child came out as trans. I know I did when I first started talking about it and actually, I still do. We often revert to talking about clothes and toys simply because it’s easier for other people to understand. They always ask ‘how did you know your child was trans?’ and there’s no easy answer because it’s not about me knowing; it’s about the child knowing for themselves. Still, I think toys and clothes are something everyone can relate to but that doesn’t mean I saw my child playing with a doll and lept to the conclusion they’re trans; that would be ridiculous. The thing is, when you have to keep justifying who your child is, it gets really exhausting because people often don’t understand. It’s such an intrusive conversation and anything you say can be used to make out you’re a bad parent.”
mermaidsuk.org.uk/news/the-toys-and-clothing-question/

You see they never really meant all the toys and clothes and pink stuff, it was just an analogy to help the unenlightened understand...Hmm

moptophairshop · 24/09/2020 16:54

@Melroses

You should work together with parents on any decisions regarding your school’s treatment of their child, in line with the school’s safeguarding policy and the statutory guidance on working together to safeguard children.
I'm so happy to see this. This has been one of my major concerns about some of the guidance I've seen from certain charities and organisations. Working with parents is fundamental to safeguarding and there are only a couple of exceptional circumstances when parents should not be informed about a safeguarding concern surrounding their child. Talking about a child's identity and how they are recognised/treated at school should absolutely be shared and discussed openly with parents. It's a massive safeguarding fail otherwise.

A huge sigh of relief to read this whole statement really from the Government - clear, common sense.

Kazakaren · 24/09/2020 16:57

Woohoo. At last someone is taking safeguarding seriously! 🎉🎊🎇🥂🍾

FindTheTruth · 24/09/2020 16:57

Probably applies to Stonewall too ... when you look at TransgenderTrend's Review of 10 Stonewall school guides

Oncewasblueandlangtoo · 24/09/2020 16:59

This is great news!

Sorry don't want to derail the thread but do you have any more information about what Belongto are teaching? Could you PM me?

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 24/09/2020 17:00

This is fantastic! It's exactly what I told my kids HT I was concerned about in the RSE curriculum. Thankfully, he appears to agree with me, and I was going to be having another meeting with him anyway, so this is great timing. Phew!

Well, if it's not about toy choices, or whether you are masculine or feminine, and it's not a medical condition, and there is no biological test for it, then they are going to have to come up with an explanation of what the bloody hell it is.

Because that DofE statement is pretty explicit, if an agency has been promoting harmful gender stereotypes, do not use them.

wellbehavedwomen · 24/09/2020 17:01

I think this is also a moment to say thank you to Baroness Emma Nicholson, who has so strongly fought this corner for children. She really has marshalled her arguments and supported women in arguing against harmful teaching, and allowing lobbyists to indoctrinate kids in schools. I am grateful.

highame · 24/09/2020 17:02

I'd also like to thank the Baroness, her letter to Gavin Williams should have moved a few boulders Flowers
