It was a carefully crafted response designed to make it impossible to detect where he actually stands on the issue.

Which is fine IMO. Being an actor in a Fantastic Beasts film doesn't automatically make him qualified on the subject at hand.

I think that's a fine answer. It's vague but he's right that listening to each other is important, and there is none of the irrational bilge that Watson, Radcliffe and Grint came out with.

I've no idea where he stands on JKR but I do agree that he's not touching the discussion with a barge pole. Which I think is eminently sensible of him/the studio/the PR who coached him on that response.

He's got a bloody good publicist, is my main feeling.

He staying neutral which is fine by me & better than trotting out the nonsense that the younger actors do. Let’s be honest though Jude Law knows exactly what a woman is.

In the current climate, this is frankly a positive endorsement of JK Rowling. He is basically saying, I am old enough and intelligent enough to understand that people don't share the same opinions, and the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Which only goes to make me love him that little bit more.

And I think his last sentence was simply trying to express that "change lies in respect and dialogue".

That response has my respect. He'd planned it before. There's no reason an actor has to have public opinions on difficult topics, and he is staying out of it without disowning jkr.

I agree it probably means he has some sympathy with her position, or at least sees where she's coming from because there is no loss incurred by saying something shallow that allows all the pink/white/blue social media accounts to say 'jude says trans rights'. 'jude says dialogue is where change lives' isn't going to do it for them.
