“Turnaround due to grassroots women’s groups and mumsnet users”

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 22/09/2020 11:12

The fact that Benjamin Cohen is so happy with it confirms exactly what I thought.

Women’s and girls’ rights are under threat and seriously compromised until the GRA is repealed and the institutional capture undone.

It’s going to be the work of decades. We need to get our heads round that.

Alison who is a lawyer has posted this on twitter

@Ereshkigalangcleg

If legal self ID had been granted, any challenge involving single sex spaces would be much harder both in theory and practice, and for that I'm going to see it as a battle won. The war is still raging.
Exactly. I'm happy to look for success where I can. This a very long, draining war against women's rights and protections.

[quote TinselAngel]Looks like spousal exit clause retained, which is good news for trans widows.

Yes!!! So glad to see this.

Gottalife · 22/09/2020 11:16

“It is my view that the balance struck in the existing legislation is correct. There are proportionate checks and balances in the system, alongside support for people that want to change their legal sex."

An acknowledgement that the birth certificate will show the legal sex not gender.

littlbrowndog · 22/09/2020 11:16

Yes tinsel 🥂

Yes, true, it’s a battle won. And I know that is something to recognise.

I know I’m being very dour about this. I just hoped for far more from Truss. Not that I ever thought GRA repeal was on the table at this stage; but this parroting of TRA ideology and presenting it as grounded in reason/fact/justice is deeply disturbing from a government which I thought was going to distance itself much more from all that.

The war still rages indeed.

Reading that brought a tear to my eye. Smile
KatVonlabonk · 22/09/2020 11:19

That tweet from misogynist penis news chief, Ben Cohen. The actual cheek. His lying rag was the one wipping up all the shrieking about gentile inspections.

Aye a battle won. Now the court cases.

Ok, yes, this is good news!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 22/09/2020 11:21

Despite my confusion, if penis news hates it, then it must be going in the right direction Smile

Huh? Ben Cohen thinks it’s great.
FloralBunting · 22/09/2020 11:22

Cheer up, wims. This is good, good news. The bits that the TRA tried to leverage, like cost, bureaucracy etc. have been dealt with. They won't be able to use those as distraction points now.

Passages like this; 'Our philosophy is that a person’s character, your ideas, and your work ethic trumps the colour of your skin or your biological sex. We firmly believe that neither biology nor gender is destiny' are filler and can quite easily be interpreted as no one should be limited by the stereotypes or negative assumptions associated with ethnicity or sex, which is exactly the feminist position.

Obviously we don't just rest on our laurels and consider everything done now. We keep on keeping on, court challenges and campaigning.

But please, park your misgivings for a day and enjoy the reward of what so many of you have worked towards. There are enough setbacks on the way to give us bad days. This is a good day.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 22/09/2020 11:24

I'm with Eresh, we haven't yet won the war but we have certainly won a significant battle - the statement may not be perfect, but we HAVE stopped self-ID (can you imagine how we'd be feeling if that had gone the other way?), and it does mention allowing single-sex exemptions on basis of bio sex, which gives us something to work with for the future, despite the confusing mention of using "facilities of chosen gender" also being in there. (Maybe the key here is to try to get providers to give a very clear answer on whether their facilities are segregated by sex, or by gender - and if they say gender, to require explanation of why "gender" is relevant for segregation of spaces/roles, how this is not discrimination against, for example, other males who are still excluded from female spaces because they don't claim a "female" GI, and whether "gender" segregation has any legal basis?).

Also, some of the upcoming court cases should make a big difference in terms of the single-sex spaces issues, especially Ann Sinnott's case on the EHRC guidelines. So we need to keep supporting those and hopefully they will bring more clarity!

sansgender · 22/09/2020 11:24

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but will we be able to watch this live anywhere?

OldCrone · 22/09/2020 11:25

I'm reading the Consultation Report.

They say that FPFW provided a template which couldn't be edited, and Stonewall just gave 'guidance' so that people could write their own responses. Is this true? I thought it was the other way round.

On page 22 of the report:

As noted in the preceding section, responses that were received through the online forms hosted by Stonewall and Level Up often reflected the guidance and recommended responses that these organisations provided. In the case of the Fair Play for Women responses, all but a handful consisted of a standard pre-filled template.

KatVonlabonk · 22/09/2020 11:26

To me that reads like a spouse has to consent to continue in what would be a same sex marriage. That seems fair enough.

The frothing madness about it has started over on twitter.

Kit19 · 22/09/2020 11:26

Yes floral! It’s not perfect but think of where we were, 18 months ago self ID was all but guaranteed and if it wasn’t for all the fabulous women around the UK, today would be an announcement about an amended act bringing in self ID

So yes there’s still lots to do but today we drink wine & celebrate what we have achieved

littlbrowndog · 22/09/2020 11:27

Yeah. We keep going. it’s a win

Other battles on the horizon.

Shedbuilder · 22/09/2020 11:28

Lots of dismay from TRAs here:

twitter.com/GEOgovuk/status/1308337614500569093

None of them seem able to understand the spousal exit clause and of course see it as a way partners can hold up the process. Me, me, me...

KatVonlabonk · 22/09/2020 11:28

(And even genital inspections)

😳

Whoops

Channeling Sally Hines there. In spelling at least.

Kit19 · 22/09/2020 11:28

Oh yes I think we should prepare for incoming Kat. The monitors will be out in force
