The Mail does not seem to have reported Truss’ statement at all.

If you search 'liz truss' it comes up. I think it just didn't make the front page.

They did do a well-deserved take down of a 'transgender thug' (their words): www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8759303/Transgender-thug-36-identifies-woman-jailed-male-prison.html

Needmoresleep · 23/09/2020 07:56

Yes, whilst keeping to guidelines around use of pronouns. Despite the serious articles, the Mail can't resist a bit of clickbait.

Odd though that their Liz Truss article did not make the front page, given that it would have strong reader support. My guess is that there was some tinkering with algorithms. They need so much content, and many readers might like a break from Covid. (The Mail clearly feels that the new restrictions are too much...presumably reflecting what they believe is reader opinion.)

As I wrote yesterday, I think that that day was specifically chosen to be a day on which there wouldn't be much room for the Response news to be covered in the media. In the event there was hardly any coverage. It was mentioned briefly in news bulletins but with no follow up. There's a second chance today with it appearing in phone-ins, but in terms of the optics the government were successful in presenting this as:

  • being open to consultation and transparent making a big clear announcement;
  • meeting the (explicit) demands to some degree so being responsive; and
  • having announced steps that are reasonable because by and large the public have gone "oh, OK then".

I'd say that puts on pause any substantive amendment to the GRA for the next few years, unless Labour win a General Election. Until then it's now time for the court cases, the (sadly) growing number of detransitioners, and more public awareness of boundaries being broken down around women's single-sex spaces.

Jeeeez · 23/09/2020 13:34

Yes, I noticed the gender identity too. That's another vital head of the hydra to slay!

More from the Spectator, Debbie Hayton always writes a good piece and I enjoy the perspective of a transwomen who's GC

OvaHere · 23/09/2020 14:27

Dr Hayton can now presumably put pressure on NASUWT to remove the guidance they contributed to that was written entirely on the basis of self ID despite it not being lawful.

.....become an activist? A bridge too far perhaps

Hmmm. Yes - a nice article by DH in the Spectator on how they were able to use LT’s clarification to ensure that NASUWT supported the rights of women teachers majority of the workforce to single sex spaces and that women were allowed to speak using the evidence of their own eyes without threat.

That would worth waiting for... but I expect a long wait would be necessary.

Happy to be surprised

I don't think it's activism as such if you are one of the authors.

Wouldn’t that be nice.

Dr Hayton?

NonnyMouse1337 · 23/09/2020 16:09

For anyone who might be interested - you can send a thank you card to Liz Truss.

KimThomas · 23/09/2020 18:26

I wrote this - it’s about how Safe Schools Alliance are continuing the fight for single sex spaces in schools after the Truss announcement:

ScrapThatThen · 23/09/2020 19:00

Thank you Liz Truss

Antibles · 23/09/2020 19:27

Thank you Liz Truss.

Thank you also for that article Kim.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 23/09/2020 21:35

Thanks Nonny I shall thank LT & ask for strengthening/enforcement of the equality act

Escapeplanning · 24/09/2020 01:55

Hello Kim. we don't usually get journos rocking up asking for clicks and I can't read it cos paywall. I've read D Thomas's musings in the 'graph on hair, clothes and what is expected from women to extend the feeling of being in love written about recently. I can recommend Ray Blanchard for more info on that. There's a transwidow thread which speaks from the grounded side. Are you a fan of Julie Birchill?

If you want to chatt Kim, join in.

VickySunshine · 24/09/2020 04:24

I have lesbian fantasies about Liz Truss. Blush

Needmoresleep · 24/09/2020 07:26

And posting at 04:24:45 AM.

I hope you were able to get back to sleep.

KimThomas · 24/09/2020 09:23

Apologies, Escape - I didn’t really come looking for clicks. It was just in response to a comment that the media hadn’t covered it, and I thought people might be interested.

I wrote it for the Telegraph because they were the ones interested. When I tried writing about the SSA campaign some time ago for the Guardian (my usual outlet), I was told the piece was too one-sided.

I am a huge admirer of Julie Burchill (though I don’t always agree with her!) and am lucky enough to be friends with her on Facebook.

I am a bit cautious about posting on here too often under my own name, though perhaps I have reached the stage where I have nothing to lose.

nauticant · 24/09/2020 09:29

You're welcome here Kim. The problem Mumsnet gets from some journalists is when they skulking around in disguise posting stuff to provoke a response that can be turned into content. An upfront "this is my work" looks fine.

gardenbird48 · 24/09/2020 09:33

thanks for writing it Kim - it is obviously not an easy topic to write and get published on at the moment so thank you for your work and willingness to put your head above the parapet - the more the better.

Imnobody4 · 24/09/2020 09:38

Thanks for the article Kim, it's frustrating to hear the Guardian felt your previous one was one-sided seeing their usual content is totally one-sided.

teawamutu · 24/09/2020 12:24

Indeed, but the right side of history. Or something. That makes it OK Hmm
