Women’s Equality Party waking up to unpopularity of self-ID?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 21/09/2020 21:33

I wrote off the Women’s Equality Party when I read their statement supporting self-ID in 2017: “We recognise that the binary words “woman” and “man” do not reflect the gender experience of everyone in our country and support the right of all to define their sex or gender or to reject gendered divisions as they choose..”

But now it seems they’re running a consultation on it.

This was in the Guardian on Thursday 17th September.
www.theguardian.com/society/2020/sep/17/womens-equality-party-runs-consultation-on-self-identification-for-trans-people

Does anyone know any more about it? I can't find anything on the WEP website about it. It seems an odd time to start a consultation, just before the government was due to announce a decision on changing the law.

I suppose it’s a step forward that they’re even considering self-ID might not appeal to most women.

There was a thread in it a few days ago but so much going on it’s probably fallen off the page. I thought somone on that thread was a WEP member & had more info

I think it’s a good idea if it’s a genuine consultation facilitated properly where ppl feel able to honestly doesn’t their minds and all views are welcome. However as the Consultation is being facilitated by natcen previous employers of stonewall ceo Nancy Kelly I’m suspicious of how impartial it will be....

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/09/2020 21:49

I doubt the consultation will reach the general population in any meaningful way.

WEP are not a political party for human females, sadly.

I suppose the best one can say is that they are not as completely unhinged as the Lib Dems.

Escapeplanning · 21/09/2020 22:11

I read the responses on Twitter and it's a succinct illustration of the situation. Mostly angry tw pissed off that an organisation for and about women isn't unwaveringly playing the game the way they expect.

WEP prioritised tw from day one and the membership plummeted by two thirds to barely 8000 members over the next few years, accelerated no doubt after the shitty treatment of Heather Brunskel-Evans. The main protagonist in that was a male who transitioned in his late 60s very recently and for 4 quid a month can demand women jump. They are also in the pocket of Diva, the current leader Mandu Read ,was on a panel that gave an award to Adrian Harrop. Look up Rainbow Awards.

There is now someone TW moaning about not being prioritised on the panel despite only joining recently ie a couple of years ago, and who talks on Twitter about buying hormone patches online in Europe. This is apparently proof that WEP are transphobic which is a joke.

This is a sad episode and a perfect illustration of the immense pressure so called inclusive policies place on women's organisations. They're destroyed from within.

I have given up bothering for now, maybe once Mandu gets bored and moves on it may change but I doubt it. She is oblivious to the problems. I spoke to her briefly at the UCL women's meeting in February and her reaction to my feedback about the horrific treatment of academics was to tell me she thought it wasn't true.

RhymesWithOrange · 21/09/2020 22:15

They promised this two flipping years ago! All the GC feminists have already left ffs.

What's Mandu TWAW Reid going to do if it turns out the party doesn't think TWAW?

RhymesWithOrange · 21/09/2020 22:19

@Escapeplanning I saw Mandu sneak into the back and wondered what she thought. WEP could only dream of that kind of support from women. Their conference was a sideshow in comparison.

Escapeplanning · 21/09/2020 22:20

The party membership is likely to reflect the women of the country, and therefore won't think TWAW.

The rage this generates destroys any collectivism or progress. It will be flamed death.

Escapeplanning · 21/09/2020 22:38

They are struggling to break even at the moment. 8000 members paying 4 quid a month with 13 staff to pay and an office is a stretch.

The conference this year was put off confirmation pre covid-19 as they didn't have the money to commit to a venue in advance of selling tickets, it's now gone on line so that's rescued that. They have been recruiting fund raisers so of course they are even more at risk of capture by more organisations like Diva.

What a flop.

OhHolyJesus · 21/09/2020 23:01

I'd pay £4 a month if they stood up for women.

C'mon WEP, tell us you know what a woman is, what women endure with their bodies and childbirth, what we survive in terms of rape, domestic violence, what we overcome in terms of the sex-based pay gap and every day misogyny ...and if you say men cannot be women then I'll pay that, hell I'd double it.

Come back to reality and others may forgive you. Although we might not but still based on population statistics alone you'd be better off giving it a try with the women wouldn't you? The 51%?

CivilCervix · 21/09/2020 23:53

They tied themselves in knots over this early on and then lowered themselves utterly with their treatment of Heather Brunskell-Evans. How do they imagine they'll win over the significant number of women they need to elevate their cause, while they pander to a minority with very particular needs? Not remotely optimistic that a consultation won't be subject to the same woolly thinking they've demonstrated for some time now.

RadicalFern · 22/09/2020 00:04

I remember the last time they said this. The leader wosserface stood up at a WPUK meeting and asked us all to be patient while they made their minds up...

EdgeOfACoin · 22/09/2020 07:01

What is the WEP's definition of 'woman', I wonder.

If the party does not believe that a woman is an 'adult human female', what does it consider a woman to be?

Is a woman...anyone who wears dresses? Anyone with a 'feminine' personality? Anyone who says they are a woman? Anyone who likes having long hair and wearing make-up? It can't be any of those things, because that would clearly be a ridiculous way to define a 'woman'.

So, who does the WEP represent?

If the Women's Equality Party doesn't know and has to hold a consultation(!), I can't see how they are fit for purpose.

It's like the RSPB holding a consultation to work out what a 'bird' is.

Kit19 · 22/09/2020 07:13

Nailed it Edge!

8000 members is pitiful

Yet again why are some biological women (take that Lib Dem’s!) much more interested in appeasing Male bodied ppl (and again Lib Dem’s!) than standing up for women?

LizzieSiddal · 22/09/2020 07:56

They’ve got themselves in a right mess haven’t they. Such a wasted opportunity.

That's their tweet of the guardian article which got the most responses. They seem to have a lot of trans people commenting and not a lot of women.

I would say that they've blown it already, most women aren't paying them attention now.

Cailleach1 · 22/09/2020 08:23

My cats would vote for the bandwidth of birds to be widened. They'd use their democratic vote to be included in the description of birds. They'd like bird sanctuaries to be 'inclusive' of all birds and to be welcomed onto one with all the 'other' type(s) of birds.

EarthSight · 22/09/2020 09:23

😂😂😂

That made me laugh out loud. A good start to my morning.

EarthSight · 22/09/2020 09:26

If they've twisted themselves in knots over this, then it's difficult to have respect for them. For God's sake! What on earth are they playing at??? It's actually sad to see and embarrassing.

persistentwoman · 22/09/2020 09:31

They've been an embarrassment for years now. Imagine not being able to define your USP. But it's a good example of the tactics laid out in the Denton report:
www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-document-that-reveals-the-remarkable-tactics-of-trans-lobbyists

Mind you, if that other misogynistic party, the Lib Dems have their way, even posting this link will be illegal!
