The point about the safe zone [sic] is that not only has it made things no safer for the street prostitutes who work there (there was a murder within a matter of weeks of the supposed safe zone being started) it has (by turning the whole area into a wild-west, anything goes, any woman here is fair game area) made all women in Holbeck demonstrably unsafe.

This.

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 18:40

@SorryImKnew

I'm sure women are giving bjs for a fiver all over the UK, but since that area is a safe zone, they go there rather than hide in dangerous parks or whatever. I doubt it's confined to Leeds.
It's not 'safe'. Not for the women. For the traffickers, pimps and punters maybe.

Have a look at Stop The Traffik.

Smallsteps88 · 20/09/2020 18:40

If you campaigned about these issues rather than transwomen, I'd happily engage with the Feminism section.

Grin

I think the feminism section has being doing okay without your endorsement.

OvaHere · 20/09/2020 18:41

Hard to avoid when every thread on Feminism seems to be about transwomen. I haven't noticed any other topics.

I've counted about 17 on the first page of the board.

Anyway back on topic, it will be interesting to see where Posie and the ReSisters take this. They have plenty of proof it was a lawful protest and that they did a risk assessment.

Yes. I think Posie has a court summons. I imagine she won't be taking it lying down.

AvoidingTheWineAisle · 20/09/2020 18:45

There are plenty of threads about other topics - sex slavery, porn, the WEP, calling women Karen, dodgy gynaecologists etc - right NOW.

Although asking feminists not to discuss self ID is like asking BLM activists not to mention the police force.

Behave, will ya.

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2020 18:45

Leeds Spinners & Posie: Brave women of integrity, I applaud you all.

@SorryImKnew

I don't believe in her transphobia no. Prostitution I can get behind - absolutely. But she needs to take one issue at a time, and I think the transphobic element might put normal women off.
Yes, I would think transphobia would put most 'normal' women off - whatever that means. Just as well she's not transphobic isn't it. And nor are most 'normal' women. Goady or what.

It will be fascinating to see how this plays out.

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 18:49

@SorryImKnew You could start your own thread and see if 14 people join in?

Kazakaren · 20/09/2020 18:49

😂 If the section doesn't suit your beliefs, then no one is forcing you to engage.

Yes I think the arrests were unlawful.

Unlike Greenham back in the day, these female political protesters have video evidence that shows that.

And it's 'out there' now.

They are very brave and smart.

That's because it's the biggest regression of women's rights and spaces in the U.K in a long time. No wonder it appears so often!
JamieLeeCurtains · 20/09/2020 18:57

Some of the stuff we saw at Greenham, if it had been livestreamed, well I think a few Thames Valley (Newbury) police officers' families would have been ashamed of them.

That police force was known for its misogynistic culture.

Looks like Leeds / West Yorks is the same.

IHeartSusanDey · 20/09/2020 18:59

SorryImKnew, you're out of your depth here, kid. These women are running rings round you,

Took the words right out of my mouth Smile

I had dealings with their rape unit round about the same time, and misogynistic would be the understatement of the (20th) century. And this was after the Panorama programme which exposed how bad they were at handling rape cases, after which their new, woman-friendly rape unit got set up with great fanfare.

And, surprise, surprise, despite the great fanfare, it turned out they were still woman-hating bastards.

  1. I think Posie Parker is brilliant
  2. As an American, I can't help compare the bland and procedural UK police interactions with our intimidating and violent ones.
  3. I'd agree that Trans women's Issues shouldn't be feminist issues, but somehow men's activists pushed their way into women's and girl's spaces and here we are.
Badbanana · 20/09/2020 19:03

Posie has played a blinder on this one, as always. That photo of the woman wearing the "Thought Criminal" t-shirt being bundled into a police van by two uniformed officers is a publicity coup in itself (I do hope the poor woman is okay).

Yes, I have a feeling that picture may be making it in to a few sociology text books in around 50 years or so.

CaraDuneRedux · 20/09/2020 19:05

This is undoubtedly true (despite the fact that the police were acting outwith their legal authority, they didn't get violent at any point - I used to live in inner city Leeds, in a very rough area, and was always astonished at how patient the police were with very violent, aggressive people.)

That said, they clearly did something very wrong today - they interfered with legitimate political protest, and carried out arrests (which I think were themselves political actions - the WYP in particular have been "Stonewalled" and aren't enforcing actual laws, they're enforcing "Stonewall Law.")

KatVonlabonk · 20/09/2020 19:05

Everytime they give Posie, and the cause, such attention.

I reckon national headlines off this. And if she gets fined, I'm sure they'll be plenty of digging. They really really can't ignore the uppity women eh?

Even Haddocks number one (and only) fan here.

Hilarious.
