I've just finished Troubled Blood and there is NO transphobia

I've just finished it - it's very long and very very good - and definitely no transphobia! One brief mention of someone who might be the murderer might have worn a woman's coat to confuse his victims - it's one page out of 900! It's so not relevant to the plot.

It's such a good read, and really disappointing that it's getting so much negative attention.

Yup. Men kill women because some women are naive. Not because some men are killers.

They’ve switched to her being islamophibic now 🤦🏻‍♀️

She's definitely guilty of being a successful and lovely woman.

GrumpyGran8 · 18/09/2020 17:46

@Norma27

I have the first book so will read that. Do they need to be read in order?
The relationship between Strike and Robin develops over the books and although a bit of explanatory backstory is included each time, they're best read in order.
nachthexe · 18/09/2020 17:48

It should ultimately prevent the dude from getting any more book review work, anyway. Except it won’t, Will it. Because the hard if thinking will go ‘oh yeah he’s the one that exposed the dark underbelly of JKR he’s great, get him to do more’. He’s a shit reviewer heralded as a genius. It would be funny if Donald J Trump wasn’t still in power for the same misplaced veneration.

FFS, it's just another description of somebody (possibly) dressing in disguise.

Quietlyloud · 18/09/2020 18:28

I already thought they had blown it out of proportion but holy fuck, they’ve certainly made themselves look dumb.

They is a general they as in whoever was calling it transphobic when it clearly isn’t. I don’t mean trans individuals themselves.

She was being accused of being a snob yesterday too.

Absolutely ridiculous.

I hope she starts suing.

It's the only way. She has the money and the power, something which these arseholes probably fail to encounter much in women.

FloralBunting · 18/09/2020 19:11

Yes, it's well known that referencing the quirks of dialect or variations in speech patterns in different characters is a very bad thing for an fiction author to do.

Every character should chant slogans in between long didactic passages of prose detailing the glorious new world of love and kindness.

@Datun

And of course, yet again, the whole thing is backfiring.

People are talking everywhere about real life cross dressing serial killers. They are being informed, using evidence, that cross dressing is one the most prevalent paraphilias amongst sex offenders, etc.

And everyone is letting the public know that Stonewall include cross dressers, very publicly, under the term transgender.

You don't mean sex offenders like Marie Dean? Didn't The Observer campaign to have them moved to a women's prison? Remind me, did they violently resist arrest while wearing a knicker balaclava? And did The Observer forget to mention that their crime was breaking into houses to steal and film themselves masturbating into underwear. I think they also forgot to mention that a teenage victim attempted suicide.

I'll think you'll find it's completely different when men do it Hmm

Roddy Doyle does it too.

Wishforanishwishdiash · 18/09/2020 19:38

I've got it on my kindle and looking forward to it.

I am delaying because I only just read Casual Vacancy, and I was awake in the wee hours of the morning and I can't believe the ending. I am a bit cross with JK Rowling, but because I am still a bit sad.

CaptainCarp · 18/09/2020 19:44

Are all the Robert Galbraith books one series?

I think might have to do a bit of shopping this weekend. To buy kindle or hardcopies is the question.

FloralBunting · 18/09/2020 19:50

And of course what's profoundly depressing is that a woman who wrote books which engaged a whole generation of kids with book reading is being dragged on Twitter by people who in the last year have probably only read appallingly bad smutfic on FanFiction.net

borntobequiet · 18/09/2020 19:54

Isn’t there a Sherlock Holmes story where he disguises himself as an old woman? Would that be (retrospectively) transphobic? Or perhaps the great detective was secretly trans?

Yes they are.

There are 5 in the series to date and all very good imho.

The first one got good reviews before it was discovered the author was JKR.

I'd definitely read them in order.

The detective stories stand alone but the relationship between the main protagonists evolves as does their characters.
