Irish women, have you seen this?

The HSE removed the word "woman" from their CERVICAL screening pages Angry
I stumbled across this tweet
twitter.com/Salwicklow/status/1305967737563422720?s=20

politely asking them to put woman back in, alongside trans men and trans women, who both get their own special mentions, but they have brushed off the woman who made the original request and are no longer replying.

Here's the HSE pages
www2.hse.ie/screening-and-vaccinations/cervical-screening/when-you-should-have-cervical-screening/who-should-have-cervical-screening.html

And here's Aoife Martin - no cervix skin in the game Hmm inviting followers to mock women for wanting the 99.9% of people who need cervical screening to be named as such by a health service that already has some serious catching up to do before women can believe it has their best interests at heart.

@Cailleach1, that is a perfect summary of what is wrong. Actually those stats would have been useful for my complaint to the HSE (still no reply) and also for the Sarahs on Joe Duffy - although they might have "upset" or "offended" Amy.

7Days · 21/09/2020 20:05

Isnt it amazing.

One time our genitals were literally unmentionable.
Now its hooray for pussy.
And its us ourselves that can't be mentioned among the great and good.

No reply here either

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/09/2020 20:10

No reply here either. Has anyone received a reply?

Jellyeggs · 21/09/2020 20:14

I got an auto-reply acknowledging my email. Nothing since.

WiserOlder · 21/09/2020 20:19

Is that what it said? 😂

XXSex · 21/09/2020 20:56

No reply here. Sent letters to several TDs too. Nada yet.

XXSex · 21/09/2020 20:59

Have you seen the gaslighting response on their website? www.screeningservice.ie/news/news.php?idx=235

They actually try to get us to think that they are complying with the WHO Guidelines and the Scally report?? Scandalous.

Extract is what he WHO actually say about making medical knowledge accessible to everyone in society

“ Health literacy interventions targeting the public should aim to improve all individuals’ ability to understand health information, which will lead to using these new skills to access and act on the necessary information. The significance of information may not be clear to the public; it may be necessary to explain to them why particular scientific, clinical and administrative information is important to their health. The public should not be expected to be experts, but instead to provide their perspectives to help inform policy.”

XXSex · 21/09/2020 21:01

The gall of the HSE trying to gaslight women in Ireland after the horrific treatment of women. 20 women have died as a result of the cervical cancer scandal. And they try to tell us the Scally wanted them to use neutral language. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Muhknaw · 21/09/2020 22:23

No reply either
I'm also wondering will 'people' now have to check themselves for a cervix to check whether or not they have been born with oneConfused??
Also of the 300 people and 90 women who die do all 90 identify as women/ transmen or non binary?? Will they be breaking those stats down further to include that information?

The relief of stumbling across this page! I've been silently despairing about feeling like the only woman in the country who is GC as everyone I know IRL is all "TWAW".

Just sent my complaint to the HSE - thanks for raising the issue on here OP. Glad to see so many like minded souls, it gives me hope Smile

Welcome shetoshe. There are a lot more GC Irish women than you think. I have seen discussions on Irish parenting websites and the overwhelming majority are GC.

I can understand why you'd feel like the last woman standing based on media and the loud voices effect. If you're on Twitter Radcailin Women's Space Ireland (both mentioned above) are worth a look. You'll feel less alone at least. I've seen the same as Cupoftea1234 so we're definitely out there but can feel hard to find.
SecondRow · 22/09/2020 08:50

Hi Shetoshe, glad you found us Grin

I posted this thread here (and in Craicnet) because I know that a fair few Irish GC women tend to gravitate here. I had a look on boards.ie the other night as well, there's a long-running JK Rowling thread where the current HSE cervix issue was brought up as well, from a quick scan I think the consensus was in favour of women. But the fact remains it seems to be hard to get traction in the mainstream, ie, real names, well-known Irish people to stand up.

I am anonymous on twitter myself so I am not criticising anyone by the way. I know there are a lot of women working individually and also networking behind the scenes and I'm trying to support and amplify in any small way I can. Was delighted that the people I finally asked to help in real life - Mum, sister and friend - responded positively so please all do this too!

Well, no, correction, I am criticizing the politicians and journalists who've been contacted and made aware and haven't responded. Those people whose job it is to advocate for their constituents or articulate the concerns of the people. Yes I am highly unimpressed with them.

Yes, I don't think a single politician has commented on the cervical screening " people with a cervix "issue, despite all the controversy surrounding failures in screening over the past few years. The silence is scary.
Annasgirl · 22/09/2020 09:15

Yes, I agree - there is no GC politician out there (and the only people who even mention it are really right wing Catholic types (I am Catholic but of the very liberal variety so might even be excommunicated if they really looked into me).

On another note, I was driving DS to school this morning at about 7.45 and I heard Colum O'Gorman on the radio saying Amensty were fighting against misogyny and hate filled posting towards women on Twitter - the irony, Colum and Amnesty have already decided that Women should not be allowed their own spaces and to promote self ID - but suddenly he is aware of misogyny? I think he should get his own house in order before throwing stones (to quote the Bible as a fitting bookend to my post Grin).

SecondRow · 22/09/2020 09:35

Apparently TENI have come back around to the idea of women again too, after getting all confused there on Saturday Wink

I fully agree bookmark. It's interesting to see so many people who have an opinion about everything under the sun go all quiet on this. I do wish Vicky Phelan would speak up on this, but I'm not going to castigate a woman who has a terminal illness because of HSE negligence for not wanting to poke the tsunami of hate from TRA activists.

nepeta · 22/09/2020 09:48

This whole thing is upsetting and angering. Can you think of any other group being served where the main focus wouldn't be on the 98-99 % majority and its needs? Doesn't mean that there couldn't be separate sections for trans men etc.,, but just simply erasing natal women!

We are being erased.

And this is happening in several countries. I see so very clearly what societies actually think of ordinary women who don't even have interesting new gender identities. The expectation is that they will simply bend over backwards to be kind and stay silent.

SecondRow · 22/09/2020 09:57

purplepizzabunny, God yes, Vicky Phelan has enough on her plate. I did see a man on twitter name-dropping to the effect "Well I know what a cervix is, I've even interviewed Vicky Phelan and I think..." Just shut up, dude.

But yes as regards influential people in Ireland, that quote from Femfest upthread does have its relevance, whoever originally uttered it: Look around at who is here, and who is not here.

Someone on twitter, who is a highly intelligent woman, but is a complete acolyte to TRA idealogy, post how she got a lovely DM from Jedward and is so moved by it. Lovely. Getting nice messages from idiots who advocate book burning? Can't say that would make my day.

7Days · 22/09/2020 10:30

Talk about the Twitler Youth

LizzieAnt · 22/09/2020 12:32

But, this is a service that has in the past put womens lives at risk when they failed to notify them that test results may have been false. Several women died as a consequence
Oh God, I hate pointing this out (and I know I'm going to be jumped on and it's off the point) but the above quote seems to point to a fundamental misunderstanding of what actually happened during the cervical check debacle.
A lot of the reporting at the time was highly irresponsible - we certainly need higher standards there. And the HSE has many faults, as discussed upthread, but the above statement simply isn't true, although many still seem to believe it.
