Neville Southgate is a former famous footballer who has just published a sort of memoir/ manifesto. (No, I'm not a soccer fan and I wasn't aware of him) Neville believes in souls and secret inner selves. He doesn't seem to have much of a clue about biology, but that doesn't stop him telling women that they're wrong.

It comes from this in the Guardian today:

www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/15/neville-southall-everton-keeper-boris-johnson-jk-rowling-loose-cannons

*Southall veers away from football stories to his enduring concern for people in the transgender community. “Lots of people think it’s a sin to be trans,” he says. “I looked at JK Rowling’s reaction to transgender women. She above everybody knows what fantasy is. So she must be able to imagine that some people are born in the wrong bodies. We never question a child that is born as a cojoined twin. But we question that somebody can be born in the wrong body. That happens because we can’t see in somebody’s brain, or soul, to understand how they feel.

“I don’t know everything there is to know about trans people, which is why I am always trying to learn more. But I know people should be allowed to live the lives they want within reason. If you’re born into a male body but you feel so strongly that you’re a female, why should I stop you? Your body is just a shell. You have a right to discover your real self.

If somebody wants to do the whole transition it’s a big operation. Mentally it takes incredible courage. So what JK Rowling said doesn’t help. She’s sold loads of books and she’s obviously got talent but maybe she’s of an age where she doesn’t have knowledge about trans issues and maybe she’s scared of it. If you don’t understand something and you start talking out loud against it that’s dangerous.”*

The most dangerous thing, Mr Southgate, is idiots like you talking misogynist rubbish about things you confess to knowing nothing about.

PS I've previewed and tried to embolden or italicise the speech a dozen times and it just won't work for me.

I think you can take that as a win, horizon!

Hang on a sec can we just rewind:
Neville Southall sued his own daughter?

Floisme · 16/09/2020 07:07

My phone is gobsmacked too. It kept changing 'sued' to 'dude'.

So.

He has shown zero respect for

  1. Romantic partner.
  2. Daughter.
  3. Local women out and about minding their own.

But

  1. Prostitutes (Trafficked, forced, otherwise).
  2. Transvestite, and sex-role play men.

And this information has been out there in the public sphere. Including his own Social Media profiles?

Uh huh. Uh huh.

Yup, that's about it.

But according to a poster upthread, he's simply campaigning for LGBT+ rights, "For Neville is an honourable man..."

Cara Hmmmmmm

CaraDuneRedux · 16/09/2020 09:04

"The evil that women do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones. For Neville hath said that JK Rowling was transphobic, and Neville is an honourable man. So are they all (furries, adult babies, pimps, punters) honourable men."

Horizons83 · 16/09/2020 09:26

Hmm.. I've just noticed that the OP of the Facebook post I have responded to, and who called me a Karen (since deleted) is the local Green party candidate. That says a lot. Now another person has jumped in and is coming up with nonsensical things to my statement that I do not think Self-ID is a good idea, such as 'what about non-binary people, hmm?' Er, yeah, what about non-binary people?!

I am finding it amusingly ironic that my defence of JKR was started as a response to a comment by someone called Neville, and my current discussion is with someone called Tonks!

CasuallyMasculine · 16/09/2020 10:59

Isn’t everybody non-binary?

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who confirms 100% to the stereotype of their gender.

Of course they are. Unfortunately that doesn’t sit well with the people who need to feel different and special.

Yes, he gave her his football medals and shirts when she was ten then wanted them back when she was nineteen.
