Neville Southgate is a former famous footballer who has just published a sort of memoir/ manifesto. (No, I'm not a soccer fan and I wasn't aware of him) Neville believes in souls and secret inner selves. He doesn't seem to have much of a clue about biology, but that doesn't stop him telling women that they're wrong.

It comes from this in the Guardian today:

www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/15/neville-southall-everton-keeper-boris-johnson-jk-rowling-loose-cannons

*Southall veers away from football stories to his enduring concern for people in the transgender community. “Lots of people think it’s a sin to be trans,” he says. “I looked at JK Rowling’s reaction to transgender women. She above everybody knows what fantasy is. So she must be able to imagine that some people are born in the wrong bodies. We never question a child that is born as a cojoined twin. But we question that somebody can be born in the wrong body. That happens because we can’t see in somebody’s brain, or soul, to understand how they feel.

“I don’t know everything there is to know about trans people, which is why I am always trying to learn more. But I know people should be allowed to live the lives they want within reason. If you’re born into a male body but you feel so strongly that you’re a female, why should I stop you? Your body is just a shell. You have a right to discover your real self.

If somebody wants to do the whole transition it’s a big operation. Mentally it takes incredible courage. So what JK Rowling said doesn’t help. She’s sold loads of books and she’s obviously got talent but maybe she’s of an age where she doesn’t have knowledge about trans issues and maybe she’s scared of it. If you don’t understand something and you start talking out loud against it that’s dangerous.”*

The most dangerous thing, Mr Southgate, is idiots like you talking misogynist rubbish about things you confess to knowing nothing about.

PS I've previewed and tried to embolden or italicise the speech a dozen times and it just won't work for me.

he's clearly doing a bit of cross dressing at home isnt he?

I would hazzard a guess that this would explain an awful lot of male reactions to all of this, probably much more than one might suspect...

Swallowzandamazons · 15/09/2020 15:17

I'm sure the differences between TW and women would be glaringly obvious if he was after a shag....

talesofginza · 15/09/2020 15:31

"... But we question that somebody can be born in the wrong body. That happens because we can’t see in somebody’s brain, or soul, to understand how they feel."

--> If no one can 'see inside' the soul or brain of an individual, then trans people really must be quite special indeed if they can see inside the souls and minds of all women on earth and judge that they are of them and that they understand womanhood in any sense.

"I don’t know everything there is to know about trans people, which is why I am always trying to learn more."

How much do you know about women, Neville?

"Your body is just a shell."

Thanks for answering my question. What a joke!

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/09/2020 15:44

"he comes from a place of wanting ppl to be accepted for who they are and not for what they are."

Unless of course 'who they are' is women, in which case they can STFU.

@Collidascope

Jedward and Neville Southall. I'm sure with intellectual titans like that to lecture her, JKR will soon see the error of her ways.
If they have read as many books between the three of them as JKR has actually written I will fall down in shock.
Cailleach1 · 15/09/2020 16:13

He is 62 and basically saying JKR should be dismissed because she is an old bag who's past it. He calls her a 'wicked witch' on his twitter. Certain men really think that women just shut up and let men do whatever the hell they want? And they are just wicked witches if they don't. But how wonderful he can admit she is talented. I'm sure this means a lot coming from .... who is he again?

Oh and he supports sex workers and Trans people. That is on his blurb. Not supports programmes to improve the lives of sex workers. Just supports sex workers. And rainbows with 'Feminism' written at the top. If a man says it, it must be true.

Yeah, not buying it.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 15/09/2020 16:13

Lord give me strength but I am so so bloody tired of twatty males telling women what can they can think, feel and say.

Cheese pushing back against any those attempting to silence women does not make one a "hater. JKR and other women are getting their fair share of abuse and attacks when they question this ideology ... can you link to where you've spoken out against this treatment of women? Otherwise it feels like you believe a woman's treatment doesn't matter.

CasuallyMasculine · 15/09/2020 16:17

She’s sold loads of books and she’s obviously got talent

Oh dear.

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 16:25

@boatyardblues

The voice I hear when I read those quotes from Nev in the OP is Barry Shitpeas from Charlie Brooker’s Screenburn.

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 16:31

NS is a great support of LGBT rights and has been for many many years. If you think that is an easy thing to in football, you are wrong. He has been abused and attacked for some of things he has said and continues to be.

Big Nev hasn't been 'in football' for a long time. If he has been attacked for the things he has said, it hasn't made him any more tolerant of people with differing views.

I stand by my opinion that Nev, like a lot of men (such as Frankie Boyle) is using trans rights to try and wipe away their questionable pasts ( Nev treated his wife, daughter and mistress appallingly by all accounts) whilst still being able to give women shit. Easiest hussle around: just repeat the standard mantras and call GC names and be lauded for it (on shitter at least).

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 16:32

*GC WOMEN that should say.

lucky Nev has never done that eh?? played the ball not the woman...oh wait, he did exactly that! played the woman not the ball - personal is where he went so personal is the response

TRA can send death threats, rape threats, physically intimidate woman at meetings, try and get people sacked from their jobs, dox, harrass and encourage people to burn books while we apparently have to rise above all of this and only behave in a quiet dignified manner

bollocks to that

CaraDuneRedux · 15/09/2020 16:42

@KimberWozRobbed Shock (though not surprised, sadly - the overlap between "wokebeard scold of women" and "wouldn't want to be alone in a lift with" is quite large).

Escapeplanning · 15/09/2020 16:45

This is a man paid to jump around on grass while people kick balls at him. Mmmm.

WeeBisom · 15/09/2020 16:52

Odd, Mumsnet said my post violated their guidelines. Let's try again: it's amazing that Neville is not challenged at all in that interview. Some of the things he says are very confused . I suppose this is the problem with being a celebrity - you can just say whatever you want and no one counters it. I have no idea what 'conjoined twins' have to do with trans people, for example. I can't even fathom what he was trying to get at with this comparison. And it's the same with the 'born in the wrong body' trope - what does this even mean? Is he suggesting we are floating souls and our souls can accidentally get trapped inside a body not meant for them?

SunsetBeetch · 15/09/2020 17:00

Big Nev should perhaps take some lessons from JK in dignity and composure, considering his online tantrums when he gets called out (i.e. when the TRA who took over his account told lies about the Speakers Corner assault, and the adult baby takeover fiasco).

midgebabe · 15/09/2020 17:09

Well I suppose I could try and float off into another body the next time I find myself floating above myself

Always thought it was just a weird dream ....

AnonymousSauces · 15/09/2020 17:13

The barrel that the Guardian scrapes is apparently bottomless.

ColleagueFromMars · 15/09/2020 17:28

If my body was just a shell, I'd be a hermit crab looking to downsize.

Nominate this for quote of the thread!

Wow, seems to be alot of haters out there, making ridiculous claims about NS based on his look, gender and career.

Do you not get the irony of this statement? That's literally what our Nev is doing to JKR.

If you think that is an easy thing to in football, you are wrong.

I'll listen to a footballer on equality when he's proven he's done his bit to make football a safe place for men to be black and gay, which it still isn't. And that's before even touching on women's football.

He has been abused and attacked for some of things he has said and continues to be.

Just like he's doing to JKR.

You may not believe all he has to say ( and some of the stuff I dont) but he comes from a place of wanting ppl to be accepted for who they are and not for what they are.

In this case he is ignorant and threatening women's rights. Women, funnily enough, aren't very happy about that.

SoManyActivities · 15/09/2020 17:38

Why do I get the feeling that Neville comes from the 'I see them as women except for relationship purposes' school of thought? Grin

MyfanwyMontez · 15/09/2020 17:43

Firstly he wasn’t telling women that they are wrong. He was telling a woman that she was wrong. Is it misogynistic to tell a woman she is wrong? Can women never be wrong? Also, he didn’t claim to know nothing about the subject just that he didn’t know it all and was trying to learn more. Plus his name is Southall not Southgate. So when criticising someone it may just be a good idea to get yer facts right.

SoManyActivities · 15/09/2020 17:49

Firstly he wasn’t telling women that they are wrong. He was telling a woman that she was wrong. Is it misogynistic to tell a woman she is wrong?

When a man is telling a woman that she is wrong about what a woman is, then yeah, I would say that's a leeeeeetle bit misogynistic.

In fact, its one of the 'rules of misogyny' :

Men are whatever men say they are, and women are whatever men say they are.
