Neville Southall, celebrity transgender supporter, disses JKR

Neville Southgate is a former famous footballer who has just published a sort of memoir/ manifesto. (No, I'm not a soccer fan and I wasn't aware of him) Neville believes in souls and secret inner selves. He doesn't seem to have much of a clue about biology, but that doesn't stop him telling women that they're wrong.

It comes from this in the Guardian today:

www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/15/neville-southall-everton-keeper-boris-johnson-jk-rowling-loose-cannons

*Southall veers away from football stories to his enduring concern for people in the transgender community. “Lots of people think it’s a sin to be trans,” he says. “I looked at JK Rowling’s reaction to transgender women. She above everybody knows what fantasy is. So she must be able to imagine that some people are born in the wrong bodies. We never question a child that is born as a cojoined twin. But we question that somebody can be born in the wrong body. That happens because we can’t see in somebody’s brain, or soul, to understand how they feel.

“I don’t know everything there is to know about trans people, which is why I am always trying to learn more. But I know people should be allowed to live the lives they want within reason. If you’re born into a male body but you feel so strongly that you’re a female, why should I stop you? Your body is just a shell. You have a right to discover your real self.

If somebody wants to do the whole transition it’s a big operation. Mentally it takes incredible courage. So what JK Rowling said doesn’t help. She’s sold loads of books and she’s obviously got talent but maybe she’s of an age where she doesn’t have knowledge about trans issues and maybe she’s scared of it. If you don’t understand something and you start talking out loud against it that’s dangerous.”*

The most dangerous thing, Mr Southgate, is idiots like you talking misogynist rubbish about things you confess to knowing nothing about.

PS I've previewed and tried to embolden or italicise the speech a dozen times and it just won't work for me.

How anyone can take Neville 'Adult Baby' Southall seriously is beyond me. This is wokeness, I guess. Maybe he should go back to sleep.

RoyalCorgi · 15/09/2020 12:30

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

She above everybody knows what fantasy is. So she must be able to imagine that some people are born in the wrong bodies I’m not sure this comes across in quite the way he intended tbh.
Quite. Poor Nev isn't the sharpest tool in the box.
SophocIestheFox · 15/09/2020 12:40

“Lots of people think it’s a sin to be trans,”

Interesting turn of phrase there. Sort of feeds into the perception that some people have that it’s a sign of conservatism to question trans ideology, that it stems from sort sort of religious belief about men and women. It’s an incredible bait and switch, because the metaphysical, religiously derived elements in this debate seem to me to rest on the side that believes in a magical internal, essence that can only be known by the possessor of it, and the side that regularly casts out apostates, recites creeds, and demonises female experiences....

It shows how little he has engaged with what JKR has actually said. And the ageism! Arf!

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 15/09/2020 12:41

Neville comes across as fitting the stereotype about footballers being thick very well.

feelingverylazytoday · 15/09/2020 12:45

I think Neville means well, but he just doesn't understand basic science.

Shedbuilder · 15/09/2020 12:48

I hadn't realised he had form for this kind of thing.

I think it's occasionally useful to realise the level of debate on this subject in what could be called ordinary and everyday discourse. This is probably how an awful lot of people think. Or don't think. It's scary.

I think it is time to start treating The Guardian like Prick News and stop giving them the clicks.

SlipperyLizard · 15/09/2020 12:50

Neville clearly has no clue about what women’s real concerns are, but he doesn’t seem to care as they’re just women saying no to men and somehow Neville knows that must be wrong.

The misery is compounded by the fact that this shit is printed in the Guardian without challenge, another nail in the coffin of any hope I’ll ever send money their way (can’t believe I once bought it every day!).

Whatsnewpussyhat · 15/09/2020 13:01

If you don’t understand something and you start talking out loud against it that’s dangerous

If my eyes rolled any more they'd fall out me head. The fucking irony.

Women talking is dangerous. Especially the ones the woke blokes think are no longer of any use sexually. Too old to understand?

Same old misogyny wrapped up in shiny woke packaging. These men with NOTHING to loose who now get their head patted for airing it publicly are the worst kind.

This attack on JKR and making her some kind of disney type villain is sickening.

eurochick · 15/09/2020 13:28

Um. Where to start with this? Conjoined twins? Agism? Why the Guardian is giving this quarter wit air time?

I'm going with the heading the ball thing.

Dreeple · 15/09/2020 13:48

Nobody’s perfect, but least JK Rowling isn’t a bone-headed nappy party host.

ArabellaScott · 15/09/2020 13:53

He ... means well? He's not really showing his brains in the best light, here, is he?

Still, well done, Neville, do please keep on speaking up. The more people here this garbled gibberish viewpoint, the better.

Thelnebriati · 15/09/2020 14:01

You must read it, its unintentionally hilarious.

@KimberWozRobbed

I grew up in the town where Southall lives and I stopped walking my dog near his house because he definitely knows what a teenage girl is.
😬 How old was he? And was he a bit lechy or was it more than that?
Thingybob · 15/09/2020 14:13

How can JKR still believe she is right when so many intelligent, talented, wise men are speaking up?

Neville Southall, celebrity transgender supporter, disses JKR
IheartJKR · 15/09/2020 14:14

JKR is not only committed the sin of being a woman with an opinion.... but disgustingly...she’s of an age.

The ultimate sin.

IheartJKR · 15/09/2020 14:14

*has

Fuckingell, it's really Hasbeens' Day Out, innit?
Collidascope · 15/09/2020 14:17

Jedward and Neville Southall. I'm sure with intellectual titans like that to lecture her, JKR will soon see the error of her ways.

JanMeyer · 15/09/2020 14:21

Um, do goalkeepers head the ball a lot?

Not as much as outfield players but they do get hit in the face a lot, so, point still stands.

It's very telling how he only talks about men feeling like they're really women. Does he not know transmen exist, or are they just not important enough for him to mention because they're women?

SisterCellophane · 15/09/2020 14:25

"Your body is just a shell" says man whose career and public voice are based on his body...

Wow, seems to be alot of haters out there, making ridiculous claims about NS based on his look, gender and career. All things we were all trying to fight against for years.
NS is a great support of LGBT rights and has been for many many years. If you think that is an easy thing to in football, you are wrong. He has been abused and attacked for some of things he has said and continues to be.
You may not believe all he has to say ( and some of the stuff I dont) but he comes from a place of wanting ppl to be accepted for who they are and not for what they are.

The voice I hear when I read those quotes from Nev in the OP is Barry Shitpeas from Charlie Brooker’s Screenburn.
