"AFAB Transwoman"

I've just come across an 'assigned female at birth transwoman' (on twitter). I don't even know why I'm starting this thread apart from trying to get my head around my absolute disbelief that this can even be a thing. So they're female but identifying as a male that wants to be female? What?

I did a bit of googling and found this thread and it's just boggled my mind even more

forum.emptyclosets.com/index.php?threads/does-anyone-identify-as-an-afab-transwoman.420822/

I think it might be time for bed...

Could it be a parody?

BoomBoomsCousin · 15/09/2020 01:54

Pretty sure that poster was trolling the empty closet board.

Sparklfairy · 15/09/2020 01:59

Possibly but these are two different people. Someone followed me on twitter and I googled the term on their profile and that thread came up. So is this an actual 'thing' or maybe a parody/trolling 'thing'... either way more than one person is identifying as this! Confused

I can't quite decide what is going on in that thread. Is the OP trolling? She does prompt a few responses that FWR would find ironic, such as people saying they feel like she is appropriating / stereotyping their identity.

If she was trolling I feel a bit uncomfortable with that. She had a lot of replies from people who were clearly trying to be kind and putting in time and emotional labour to try to understand her. I've never come across the linked forum before but it gives me a different perspective on the 'trans community' than the frothing Twitter activists.

Agree with everything you said. It felt like the OP was trolling/mocking by saying they wanted 'bottom surgery' and people had to say that it was about more than having a dick. Google threw up a few different results and definitions which left me feeling more confused, but I think the recent shitstorms surrounding trans rights and the 'trans umbrella' and 'gender is fluid' I suppose I took it more at face value than I should have.

There have been a few people identifying as “queer” who as far as they appear to present, are in heterosexual relationships but just seem to not want to put in the “boring straight people” bucket (but, obviously, it’s deeper than that and it’s something they feel in their soul Hmm).

But I don’t think they’d parody lgbt language to an lgbt group the way that woman did.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that, particularly in the US, there’s a lot of untreated mental health issues. And some people are in fact really confused about how to live in the world without anger and sometimes turn that inward. (One of the problems with affirmation only).

PotholeParadise · 15/09/2020 02:24

There is at least one GC woman on twitter with AFAB tranwoman in the bio. The one I'm thinking of is definitely taking the piss.

NotYourCisterinAus · 15/09/2020 02:32

I believe the term is "circumgender" and it is mostly (not always) a parody. Grin

Sparklfairy · 15/09/2020 07:04

Hm so seems likely to be a parody then, which is a relief, but also highlights the true sorry state of affairs when you read things like that and feel pressured to take it seriously. After all, any hint of disbelief automatically means you're a bigot Hmm

If a girl can really be a boy in a girl's body, then surely a girl could equally be a boy in a girl's body who thinks he's a girl.

Acceptance without exception, remember.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3791265-Labour-Lewisham-councillor-accused-of-making-foul-and-abusive-posts-relating-to-transgender-issues
The above thread refers to a circumgender councillor coming out at a council meeting.

Winesalot · 15/09/2020 07:46

There are some who do it to point out how bonkers some of the claims are.

However, I know of at least one celebrity transwoman who identifies as a ‘c*s’ woman. There are more and more who claim that they are female despite saying they are not denying biological or any reality because sex is a spectrum.

I have seen arguments that where a female is a transwoman because they fit under the trans umbrella.

I would like to see current statistics on how many people with gender dysphoria actually identify as the opposite sex rather than being that they identify out of the sex their body is. With the only option being ‘the other sex’ so that is what they adopt, the other sex’ stereotypes. Or their interpretation of what that other sex is.

I mean ffs Hmm It's like Piers Morgan suggesting he might identify as a two spirit penguin all over again!

Is this not like Caster Semenya who was AFAB but is intersex? This is the only way I can see this making any sense whatsoever.

Winesalot · 15/09/2020 08:56

Well sparkl the person I am talking about is sometimes on Piers’ show so .....

FatGirlShrinking · 15/09/2020 09:04

It's interesting that some of the responses on that thread are saying how offensive it is that the OP is appropriating the identity of a trans woman without the lived experience of being one but fail to recognise or accept that men appropriating the identity of a woman without the lived experience may also be seen as offensive.

Winesalot · 15/09/2020 09:10

Sadly, while interesting, it is not surprising shrinking.

endofthelinefinally · 15/09/2020 09:12

Caster Semenya is not intersex.

JamieLeeCurtains · 15/09/2020 09:17

I wondered if it had something to do with taking a few XY people who have been saying that they are XX and were AFAB, and who have been winning lots of women's running races, and popping them into a 'most oppressed ever' category. In other words, obfuscating the chromosomes.

ImaSababa · 15/09/2020 09:38

It's all a bit Victor/Victoria...

Sparklfairy · 15/09/2020 09:40

@Winesalot

Oh I know who you mean then. What the actual fuck. So they invent a word which they use to label us, then claim it back?! Hmm

It's the 8th rule of misogyny in action.

I often lurk on this board and my jaw frequently drops, but this fairytale, "I've woken up this morning and today I identify as..." just blows my mind.

OP posts:
Tootletum · 15/09/2020 09:41

@endofthelinefinally what is she then?

Sparklfairy · 15/09/2020 09:43

@endofthelinefinally

Caster Semenya is not intersex.
Wikipedia says she is (although I'm aware anyone can edit that site)?
OP posts:
endofthelinefinally · 15/09/2020 09:44

There is a huge thread explaining the fact that Caster Semenya is male, very near the top of this feminist board. Too much information to reproduce on this thread and would be a derailment anyway. But it is a very good, educational thread so worth reading.

BriocheForBreakfast · 15/09/2020 10:42

The irony of this poster

"You are a dysphoric woman, but calling yourself a trans woman is appropriating an experience you do not have, and is misrepresenting what it means to be a trans woman"
