The awful trend on Twitter

Hi, I don't post often, but I've seen the awful twitter trend today in regard to J K Rowling, I just feel so scared and defeated about women's rights, why are more people not up in arms and defending us? I also fear for her and women's safety, as some of these TRA's seem really unhinged.

So true royal. Mean rude am adding to your list

but men will pretend to be women to harm real women’ argument in the gender discussions

Yes, because there is evidence that men have done that. It's one of many reasons why most women don't want males in female spaces, certainly not on the basis of self ID alone.

No! No! Eresh. Remember that those men are not relevant because a male who wants to attack a women will do it anyway. The way they are dressed and present themselves have nothing to do with it at all.

Remember also, men dressing as women do it because they are women and not for any other reason... And despite being told repetitively that we should accept them for who they say they are, women should know straight away which ones will be declared never part of the community..... and never who they said they were.

Oh yes... and there are successfully prosecuted cases to prove that it actually does happen...

But so true, it was worth repeating. Grin

They just never learn. I've seen so many people who have bought the book based purely on this nasty hashtag. I've just finished the first and started the second yesterday so will be buying them all but many people would have previously waited until the book came out in paperback. She's amazing and if you look outside of Twitter she has the support of the majority of people.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/09/2020 11:51

@Datun

You've got activists demanding that the Oscars make sure trans people are proportionally represented, but when JK does it they fly off the handle.
Exactly

Just no pleasing people sometimes

Yes, and whenever a film or book is deemed 'controversial', a lot of people who wouldn't usually be interested will buy it to see what the fuss is all about.

These people don't realise they're promoting the book for JKR, for free Grin

DialSquare · 15/09/2020 12:00

I'm sure many of them must realise this but they just can't help themselves. The rage is too deeply ingrained.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/09/2020 12:02

@RoyalCorgi

I do hope karma hits her hard for her shit stirring.

Of course you do. JKR is someone who has donated millions of pounds to domestic violence charities, among others, and has set up her own charity for orphaned children. So naturally you'd wish her harm. What do you think that says about you, other than that you're a bitter, nasty, envious, mean-spirited ball of spite?

Spot on

My mum always used to say ‘a nasty piece of work’

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 15/09/2020 12:07

If you sign up for audible you can get her book for free.

I hate audio books, but, I've signed up and ordered that one.

Imagine if it was number 1 on the launch day. I'd laugh and laugh and laugh.

You can cancel your trial anytime before the 30 days ends.

Probably a naive question, but would there be the same backlash if the story had been about a woman posing as a man to commit these crimes?

I don't wish harm on her. Oh but actually I do. Hmm

Also, I strongly suspect that if anyone described a transwoman as a foul creature, that would be deleted within seconds. But it's fine to call a woman whatever you like.

caughtalightsneeze · 15/09/2020 12:13

Oh, the message hadn't been deleted on my screen. That's weird. Oh well, people saw it.

You know the answer already, don't you.... Sad

Of course not. I mean everyone knows that women are more violent than men anyway. So it stands to reason.
SophocIestheFox · 15/09/2020 12:17

“A foul creature”.

Crikey. Hyperbole and a half. I’m sure your charitable ventures put hers in the shade and no mistake.

itskindanice · 15/09/2020 12:17

It makes no sense. TRAs say that a cis man who puts on a dress to conduct a sexual assault is definitely not trans.

So how on earth can they frame this as transphobia.

Maerchentante · 15/09/2020 12:18

I saw mention of the Hashtag on Twitter last night when a friend liked a tweet by James Dreyfus last night.

I feel all this "trial by social media" is getting completely out of hand, and those who scream "show some compassion, be kind" the loudest are almost always the most vitriolic and unpleasant people about.
All I can say about these trolls is "May lightning strike them when they are on the bog" - roughly translated from my native language.

Tonight I will to my local, independent book shop and buy Troubled Blood. Might have to wait to read it for a few days as I am currently visiting Venice with Inspector Brunetti and that book needs to go back to the Library soon, but after that Cormoran and Robin it is.

FloatOn · 15/09/2020 12:24

Any other author, this would be nothing but with JK this is very clearly a dig. You always see the ‘but men will pretend to be women to harm real women’ argument in the gender discussions...you can’t possibly see this book as anything but perpetuating that She’s a foul creature. I would wish harm on anyone, but I do hope karma hits her hard for her shit stirring.

I'm not sure if this is right, but I'm nearly sure I remember JK stating that she had been researching TW for a book and that's when the conflicts between TW and womens rights became apparent, is this the book?

I read some of the tweets on that hashtag last night and they are absolutely disgusting, twitter really is a cesspit. Thankfully the more sunlight is shone the more the public will wake up.

Logic is transphobic, silly! Honestly, I wish I was joking, but if you actually pay attention to critical theory, from which much of this bilge is derived, you will soon hit the explanation that the problem with things like facts, logic and evidence is that they are basically colonial, heterosexual, “cis”normative ways of knowing, and it’s simply not necessary to have or hold a coherent position on intersectionality or identity politics. You’re only required to do that to shore up existing structures of power, and it’s actually necessary to reject that to “make progress”. They’re quite literally not having the same debate as we are.

It’s heady stuff.
