I've been a lurker for a long time - this is my second post ever. But I've just been so shocked by an article in the Radio Times with the title:

In light of the JK Rowling controversy, is it still OK to enjoy Strike: Lethal White?

Who do we complain to?

TheFleegleHasLanded · 28/08/2020 14:11

Wow. Much of that looks libellous to me!

MondayYogurt · 28/08/2020 14:11

Final para:

If you’re looking to me as a trans person to give watching the new series of Strike the OK, I say… go for it. Burke and Grainger turn in fantastic performances, and who am I to deprive you of some great telly in this most depressing of years. But I will add the proviso that if the TV industry was more interested in telling trans stories, and if we as the viewing public demanded trans stories more zealously, we probably wouldn’t be worrying so much about JK Rowling in the first place.

Yes somehow the market must be forced to change preferences in order to accommodate TRAs. Sounds familiar.

Someone will be getting a lawyers letter...

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/08/2020 14:23

I'm not sure the Radio Times is going to get away with claiming JK's personal opinions are "hateful" on the say so of a clearly irrational person who thinks they should never be reminded that the rest of the world believes in the reality of biological sex and that it's "exhausting" to have to hear opinions they disagree with about women's rights.

TheShoesa · 28/08/2020 14:23

"For me as a trans person, the media response to Rowling’s comments has been nothing short of exhausting. Spats between transgender people and wilfully ignorant bigots have been ubiquitous in the Twittersphere for years, but the enormity of Rowling’s fame has meant that the ‘debate’ she’s fostered has been picked up by mass media in an unprecedented way. This speaks to what is ultimately so troubling about the whole ordeal – thanks to Rowling, I’m now quizzed about the ‘trans debate’ by people in the real world, where previously I could reassure myself by believing that these pseudo-intellectual attacks on trans people existed only on Twitter, or only in columns by attention-seeking journalists. It feels disheartening to say the least that Rowling’s ill-informed diatribe will now be many people’s gateway into conversations about LGBT rights

And there we have it - that JKR has opened the door on this 'debate' to people who up until now had NO IDEA is exhausting and disheartening. The writer of the article is disappointed that mainstream media has picked up on this and the story has brought the issue into real life instead of on twitter.

Real life, where as far as I am aware the vast majority want everyone to exist in a way that is comfortable and authentic to them, but who also believe in the reality of biology.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/08/2020 14:25

And yes, how do you complain to the Radio Times?

Greencoatblue · 28/08/2020 14:27

Has this TRA actually read what JK wrote? I think not, like most of the other loud mouths! Yep let’s all pander to a tiny minority. Hadn’t got around to buying the Strike books, will procrastinate no longer, Amazon here I come.

RoyalCorgi · 28/08/2020 14:29

I can't quite believe this:

"In recent months, all manner of problematic elements have been highlighted in Rowling’s back catalogue, including her tendency to equate ugliness and fatness with evil, the anti-semitic stereotypes embodied by the goblins of Gringotts, and the Harry Potter series’ tepid engagement with the issue of chattel slavery. While these are all issues distinctly separate from transgender rights, it has been suggested that perhaps they are emblematic of a lack of interest on Rowling’s part in dismantling systems of oppression."

Surely the slur that she is anti-Semitic is libellous? I cannot understand why the Radio Times published that. Extraordinary.

Doyoumind · 28/08/2020 14:36

Since when does the Radio Times do opinion pieces other than straightforward reviews?

I can be pretty sure their audience is largely older and probably more conservative than other listings magazines so I'm not sure what they are trying to achieve.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 28/08/2020 14:39

Just in case...

MichelleofzeResistance · 28/08/2020 14:45

emblematic of a lack of interest on Rowling’s part in dismantling systems of oppression.

What a load of bollocks. Written by someone thoroughly invested in re-mantling systems of oppression around females as fast as possible, and who absolutely does not want to hear any discussion about how female people feel about that.

The utter lack of self awareness, cognitive dissonance and entitlement in earnest articles like this one continues to boggle me.

include name address and a telephone no.

I wonder if a BBC employee offered to write this for them.

SoManyActivities · 28/08/2020 14:53

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Good to see that the comments under the article on twitter are 100% - WTF?!

I'm another who thinks that Radio Times are on very shaky ground with that 'anti-semitic' accusation, surely they know better than to publish something like that?

Datun · 28/08/2020 14:57

Are the Radio Times actually telling their viewers that it may not be okay to watch one of their own programmes???

Dear god. This level of insanity truly defies belief.

They read, but they've proven they don't comprehend.

I saw a tweet today saying that people who are defending JKR are defending her "homophobia" using her "If sex isn't real, there's no same sex attraction" tweet as evidence. 🤦‍♀️ This apparently means JKR is denying people are same sex attracted, completely missing the point that she was actually speaking up about same sex relationships being invalidated by ideology.

There's no point even trying to engage with them, because they just see what they want to see. Their lack of comprehension is quite frightening.

Datun the Radio Times got sold off a number of years ago and is no longer anything to do with the BBC. Still a stupid article though considering their readership.

Oh, I didn't know that. I've never bought it, to be honest.

In that case, not quite as self sabotaging as I thought.

It doesn't make the article any more sane though.
