I've been a lurker for a long time - this is my second post ever. But I've just been so shocked by an article in the Radio Times with the title:

In light of the JK Rowling controversy, is it still OK to enjoy Strike: Lethal White?

This is odd, I get the paper version. The only bit about JKR and the trans debate is the Holliday Grainger piece underneath.

This is not by one of their usual writers. I would think heads will be rolling a bit and it will probably get pulled so if someone can save?

This might be a better complaint route [email protected]

I think that's one of the nastiest articles I've read

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 28/08/2020 15:11

Molly has got a point though. What has JKR ever done to end the slavery of house-elves? Or protect goblins from being literally killed by rude comments about their height? These are crucial issues in the 21st century.

Confused

When we talk about separating the art from the artist, we commonly do so when talking about, say, Roman Polanski, R. Kelly, Eric Gill, Rolf Harris or Michel Jackson. The question: “can I still read/listen to/ engage with this piece of art, cinema or music knowing what I know about the creator ” is only commonly invoked when it’s clear that the artist committed sexually criminal acts.

The concept that we should use this same lens on JKR, because a woman having an opinion about women’s rights on Twitter is exactly the same as being a rapist or an abuser is just monumentally absurd.

Give your head a wobble, Molly.

stumbledin · 28/08/2020 15:39

I think this is just trying to get ahead of the curve. ie they are obviously counting on Strike being an important part of the autumn programming. Prime time sunday slot pushing the last episode of a suitable boy onto a monday evening.

There was also a cringing article with the lead actor and actress in which both waffled on about what a nice person she was but wouldn't say anything about the trans issue.

I dont have much sympathy for the BBC but they must be aware that this will be used by trans activists to have a go at them.

Suspect thought that 90% of the audience who will watch on sunday have no interest in the debate at all.

What will be interesting is the tabloids who use tv programmes as a source of "news" will give it much coverage or decide they dont want to take the flak any way.

I will be watching to show my support for JKR!

This is so true. The idea that we should put JKR in the same bracket as Michael Jackson (I think someone else actually did this in an article a while back didn't they?) or Roman Polanski or similar is both ridiculous and totally misogynistic.
Datun · 28/08/2020 15:54

J. K. Rowling needs discrediting, and they don't care how it's done.

Saying she's responsible for the deaths of trans people is another favourite.

Unfortunately, as soon as people are given the actual article, the realisation that she has been the victim of a truly shocking, misogynistic witchhunt is swift and profound.

And, as ever, 100% counter-productive to the intent.

gardenbird48 · 28/08/2020 15:56

they may have taken it down - I can't see it on the links - good archiving thanks Fleegle

RozWatching · 28/08/2020 15:56

"thanks to Rowling, I’m now quizzed about the ‘trans debate’ by people in the real world, where previously I could reassure myself by believing that these pseudo-intellectual attacks on trans people existed only on Twitter, or only in columns by attention-seeking journalists. It feels disheartening to say the least that Rowling’s ill-informed diatribe will now be many people’s gateway into conversations about LGBT rights"

Except it's not "thanks to Rowling". Thank the trans activists who have been working behind the scenes to erase women and silence anyone who refuses to go along with the dangerous nonsense of gender ideology.
Women are being hounded for using the word women to refer to, err, women, and this person doesn't want us to talk about it?

ThinEndoftheWedge · 28/08/2020 16:00

Separating the artist from the art form:

Just so Molly knows what sort of person JKR is:

I would happily have her babysit my kids.

Yep, whole article looks to have been removed, even tried accessing it via Googling the title.

They haven't said she is anti-semitic, just that anti-semitic stereotypes allegedly exist in her work. It might not seem like a big difference but it's important.

It's really not a big difference and it's really not important. A decent lawyer would make mincemeat of that argument.

highame · 28/08/2020 16:04

Thanks Rozwatching I was trying to find a way to say exactly that.

It has gone, so either an absolute onslaught or the JKR legal team have been in touch Grin

RoyalCorgi · 28/08/2020 16:05

Sorry, after that rather blunt comment, I'd remind people that Sally Bercow was successfully sued for libel simply after tweeting "Why is Lord McAlpine trending? innocent face".

She didn't even name the accusation against McAlpine.

It's still there for me - www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2020-08-28/strike-jk-rowling-trans-controversy/

Have they changed the url or something?

I like this picture for pointing out the stupidity. It's helpful to disprove people who haven't bothered to read a word she said, by using her own words from the article to debunk the transphobia claims.

(Sorry if a magnifying glass is needed to read the writing on the pic, I don't know if it will post clearly 😬)

If you click on the link in the RT's tweet, the article is still there.

Not sure how/why because the link looks exactly the same as the one in the OP but that one doesn't work for me. Confused

SophocIestheFox · 28/08/2020 16:15

Good call on archiving, fleegle.

Falleninwiththewrongcrowd · 28/08/2020 16:15

The article is still there, but I think it's been redacted to remove some of the most libelous parts.

Yes, the anti-Semitism bit is gone, I think.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/08/2020 16:21

Yeah, they've removed the anti-Semitism, fat=ugly part.

Good job you were shit hot there on the archiving fleegle
