"She looks like a right tramp"

On our local FB group (I know!) somebody has shared a video of a couple dealing drugs outside his front garden. She appears to be weighing out a quantity.
There's been a lot of discussion about logging it with the police, how they're a well-known problem around the area etc. And then somebody has just said, ""She looks like a right tramp".

I'm so frustrated with this comment, the subtext and the message it sends. I want to respond calmly, I don't want to let it go unaddressed, but I can't find the words.

How do you think I should respond?

OP posts:

@DidoLamenting

It's a sexist comment but hardly the main issue here.
That's what I think and he could just as easily have been described as looking dodgy in some way - probably was.

How did they look, I mean were they covered in tattoos or something? I would have thought drug dealers would not have a distinctive appearance.

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 16:39

He called her a tramp and when questioned, he could have said, "oh I just mean she looks a bit scruffy" but actually he said he meant she was a slut.

He called her a tramp and a slut. Those are misogynist insults. You don't have to care but stop trying to gaslight the OP.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 16:44

It's just an interesting discussion, not an attempt at gaslighting ffs.

LizzieBlackwell · 10/08/2020 16:47

@queenofknives

I'm sorry but there's going to be muscle strain what with all the reaching going on here. It was a misogynist comment the OP picked up on. She challenged him and he confirmed he was being misogynist. So what the hell are you all going on about?

Have you never heard of a "tramp stamp"? It's not what Big Issue sellers wear for ID.

I dont know why posters are getting so pissed off that ‘tramp’ is more commonly known as something else where they live.. it’s bizarre Confused

I remember an African friend of mine getting meat from the butcher and the butcher said ‘anything else cock?’ My friend was really insulted and couldn’t grasp that different regions use words in different ways.

Yes I know what ‘tramp stamp’ is but again it’s not widely used and more used by older people.

I’m not trying to gas like the OP and I missed the update about him calling her a slut.

But I still stand by where I’m from Tramp is used to describe some one scruffy. MN is a discussion board if we all agreed on everything it would be an echo chamber

Moranne · 10/08/2020 17:08

Thank you. I needed to hear that, because some posters' insistence on me getting misinterpreting the situation is getting exasperating.

But I still stand by where I’m from Tramp is used to describe some one scruffy.

I wonder, just possibly, if we're from different places and when he said "tramp" and "slut" he actually wasn't referring to homelessness. It's a possibility isn't it, that you are wrong.

OP posts:
Sunrise234 · 10/08/2020 17:24

Tramp is also a synonym for homeless or vagrant, it may not have been meant sexually.

This.

I call the low life’s of society tramps regardless of sex.
In most countries a tramp is a homeless person.

Sunrise234 · 10/08/2020 17:26

On SM there was a cctv image of someone stealing from an OAP and someone called them a fat dickhead. He wasn’t fat nor did he have a dick on his head but when people are angry they do often use insults without thinking.

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 17:30

Hahaha I'm sorry Moranne I think there is just some weird point-missing/point-scoring going on. Not sure what pp want to achieve by arguing the toss over the different meanings of a word but maybe people are just bored. Have some wine Wine :)

Moranne · 10/08/2020 17:33

I call the low life’s of society tramps regardless of sex. In most countries a tramp is a homeless person.

So it's interesting that you choose to use it in a different way.

OP posts:
Notredamn · 10/08/2020 17:37

People are simply pointing out that that's the widely known, modern day definition, not that it's an alternative way to interpret it, that's all.
It's important because the OP has posted in Feminism, raising it as a Feminist issue.
Since the poster allegedly clarified that his meaning was misogynistic only makes it all the more odd. But the type of person to comment such a thing on a social media post probably is an oddball, anyway. Was his post deleted?

LizzieBlackwell · 10/08/2020 17:43

I wonder, just possibly, if we're from different places and when he said "tramp" and "slut" he actually wasn't referring to homelessness. It's a possibility isn't it, that you are wrong

On this occasion I’ll hold my hands up as he apparently went on to call her a slut. Which I HAVE already said. I missed that comment.

But is it really hard for you to accept that different regions/ages/cultures may use words differently. There I really is no need for all the exasperation and pithy remarks.

What would anyone have to gain with lying about that? Confused

LizzieBlackwell · 10/08/2020 17:44

Can you post a link of the facebook post?

Sunrise234 · 10/08/2020 17:45

So it's interesting that you choose to use it in a different way.

I think this is like most words though.
‘Bitch’ is a female dog but many people don’t associate it with that when saying someone has been a complete bitch today.

Moranne · 10/08/2020 17:50

What would anyone have to gain with lying about that?

I don't, but I'm not sure why other use is relevant to a post made in my part of the world where it's already been confirmed that it was used in the misogynistic manner. I am wondering why some posters are banging on about it meaning homeless in their area.

OP posts:
Moranne · 10/08/2020 17:50

Ah, I miss quoted. I was referring to the accusation, But is it really hard for you to accept that different regions/ages/cultures may use words differently.

OP posts:
Notredamn · 10/08/2020 17:51

So are you in the US?

Moranne · 10/08/2020 17:51

Oh god, and more mistakes. Running late.

OP posts:
Franticbutterfly · 10/08/2020 18:24

To me calling someone a tramp means they are unkempt.

SoleBizzz · 10/08/2020 18:25

Tramp here means scruffy.

Mammatino · 10/08/2020 18:34

If you are sure he was being a sexist idiot and you were unhappy with the language call him on it. I know that can be hard but it’s the little challenges that we make that add up to changes. I know when we had drug dealers In our village people happily ignored the males doing it but seemed to fixate on the woman. I think it was down to shock (no gender equality in drug dealing), people seemed to be more angry at the woman, who was doing it with her two kids asleep in bed upstairs. No one batted an eyelid that the male drug dealer had kids dotted all over and never saw them.

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 18:47

Tramp also means to go for a walk. So they guy probably meant she she looks like a long walk through the woods. Cos that's what people usually use it to mean where I live. So definitely there's no way that he could have meant something else, especially not anything misogynistic. Jeez the guy was just saying she looks like a walk, what's wrong with that? Feminists just go around trying to take offence at the stupidest things. Personally if someone calls me or my daughter/sister/mum a tramp I assume the absolute best of them and would never suspect any misogyny on their part. That's mean. When people talk about tramp stamps I assume they are talking about getting stamps from all the different places they've walked to.

Seriously. Lots of words have more than one meaning. The word tramp can be a derogatory word meaning slut or slag. That's what it was in this case. Whether or not you feel that's a common usage in your area or experience is really completely irrelevant and just comes over as trying to tell the OP that she's somehow mistaken or finding sexism where there is none. But it was clearly being used as a sexist slur in this case. Hence the exasperation.

Everyone on this thread needs WineWineWine in some cases Gin

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 18:53

You're being obtuse, queen. If you want to look at it like that, you're meaning a verb so that wouldn't make sense.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 18:57

Don't project all that 'feminists are always looking to be offended', not in my direction anyway. Everyone who knows me knows I'm a Feminist. You're on the Feminist board.
Also please stop talking about people like they are not there. Address directly, or don't. No need for passive aggression.

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 18:57

Lol Queen Grin

I've heard people say she looks like a tramp, and it's not to do with sleeping on the streets. If someone says he looks like a tramp, then it does.

The subtlety of language use seems to be lost on some Smile
