Time to come clean. I started to read the first HP, couldn't get into it, accused her of "lifting" from The Worst Witch series which I'd enjoyed with my sons. Fast forward and I listened to Stephen Fry (in whose voice I could happily drown) reading the first novel and I was hooked. Let him read the entire series to me. Thought she was a brilliant novelist but no more than that. Watched all the films on video and concluded the books were far superior. ( My go to, rarely find films better or even equal to the original book) Am very late to the party but finally appreciate JKR is a strong, brave woman who has become my hero, I absolutely love and respect her. I'm old so not the demograph these boards are aimed at but gransnet doesn't have a feminist board, and I've finally realised I'm a feminist Smile which I've always been but never had a label for. The only thing I'd really appreciate is either a list of acronyms or for people to occasionally use the full expression. Finally worked out what MAPs meant !

TheHeartbeat · 26/07/2020 00:10

Did ya’ll knew Daniel just had a birthday? (23 July)

Man, I really thought TRA would have pulled out a major Twitter campaign since he was the one who wrote a whole speech and all.

I guess the Will Smith, Nick Cannon, Kanye west scandals just took everyone’s celeb attention these past weeks.

RadandMad · 26/07/2020 00:14

I just couldn't admire her more. True grit, as my mum would say.

Datun · 26/07/2020 01:10

@Greencoatblue

This might help.

And we have all ages here. From teens up to, I believe, 80s.

It appears that the older one gets, the more feminism makes sense. Smile

Datun · 26/07/2020 01:15

Oh, and ask about acronyms. There's nothing more frustrating than not knowing.

No one will mind explaining.

JackiesArmy · 26/07/2020 01:27

That's a strange article in the Mail - it's word for word the same as the article in the Daily Record and the Shropshire Star. All use "sex assigned at birth" in their (inaccurate imo) definition of gender dysphoria..

The Mail article isn't accepting comments, which is unusual; maybe it's different on Sunday, but it's a completely different vibe to the usual DM articles on gender issues.

TheGodmother · 26/07/2020 02:04

Thank you

BloodSweatAndBeers · 26/07/2020 02:23

Thank you Jo. You are a shero for sure.
And she still has 14.3m followers on Twitter. If people disagreed with her loads would have blocked her by now right?

bettybeans · 26/07/2020 03:49

I'm so blown away by her. It would be the easiest thing in the world to ignore this stuff, or dip a toe in and get freaked out then step back, but she isn't doing any of that. She's somehow absorbing the hits and coming back for more, because she knows it's the right thing to do. She's not allowing the reaction to intimidate her.

I've honestly never had more admiration for a celeb or public figure. She's astonishing.

Jo, you're incredible, and you're also a human being so please take care off yourself.

RosieShacklebolt · 26/07/2020 09:01

She is amazing! Love her so much.

Anybody thinking of contacting her, do, as someone else said, her office give a nice reply :)

Two more Dumbledore quotes that make me think of her right now, in addition to the doing what is right vs what is easy! (I am re listening to her series...)

"Really Hagrid, if you are holding out for universal popularity, I'm afraid you will be in this cabin for a very long time."

"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

RosieShacklebolt · 26/07/2020 09:04

*should say, great deal MORE to stand up to our friends

Thought of this one after a recent discussion with a friend who had initially had a negative reaction to JKR's tweets.....and she really seemed to understand why I supported her, by the end! That coupled with the recent papers...oh I've got more hope than I've had in aaaages!

DialSquare · 26/07/2020 09:20

She's amazing. I emailed her in June and received a lovely response. I can't think of anyone more perfect to stand up to this. And it infuriates the TRAs as they can not do anything about it.

Greencoatblue · 26/07/2020 09:32

@Datun thank you so much for the link, will work my way through that thread.

Hiddenmnetter · 26/07/2020 09:48

She is very impressive and she doesn't just put her head above the parapet she stands tall. I hope she knows how much she is appreciated for taking this risk for us. If TRAs don't mind using violence then she's a prime target, not to mention the online abuse and vilification, as well as professional abuse.

crumpet · 26/07/2020 10:22

I’ve seen a couple of interesting tweets today - one suggesting that the Tavistock was ceasing to provide certain puberty blockers, and another that there were 10,000 complaints filed against true FDA in the US in relation to side effects of Lipton (reduces bone density/ joint effects). These were anecdotal so no citations, but interesting nonetheless.

Also (separate issue) there seems to be a growing awareness that certain procedures are available to trans people on the NHS which are not available to females - eg cosmetic hair removal, which PCOS sufferers struggle to get.

Are people using the email for general enquiries on her website? I want to send a message of thanks and encouragement.

She is incredibly brave for posting GC things on Twitter, but I am relieved to see that the vast majority of responses are supportive towards her. I do fear for her safety though.

queenofknives · 26/07/2020 12:13

A lot of tweets are now basically just saying "please please please just shut up JK" which I think is simultaneously pathetic and hilarious. They are begging her to shut up and saying they're "so tired"... oh dear! Poor things. Luckily JK has plenty of energy and has energised women all over the world. I don't think she's going to be shutting up any time soon.

lionheart · 26/07/2020 12:14

She'll stand her ground.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 26/07/2020 12:18

I have emailed her at [email protected] twice now, and received a reply from her office both times Smile

xsquared · 26/07/2020 12:18

Marcus Evans, the author of the first article has thanked her on his own Twitter page for retweeting his article. I do not see any TRAs being nasty to him.

Gosh, what a shocking turn of events! Male voice - allowed. Female voice - literally killing people, shut up T*!
StandUpStraight · 26/07/2020 17:37

I recently watched the Spectator event (on YouTube) in which Douglas Murray and Lionel Shriver talked identity politics. Douglas Murray noted that he wrote a whole chapter on trans in his book, The Madness of Crowds, and really hasn’t had anyone come after him for it. He says (as we all know) the fact that it seems to be only women who really get abuse for challenging trans ideology, itself says something very interesting about this movement and what’s driving it.
