Share widely!! JKR is slowly getting the apologies she deserves.

It would be great to share this as widely as possible.

That's the most cautiously written article I've seen in The Guardian about this issue. They knew that if they tried to pull a stunt this would have seen them getting a letter before action from JKR.

At least The Guardian have learned the lesson JKR wanted to give.

nauticant · 23/07/2020 20:29

Then you get outstanding hypocrisy like this:

twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1286381940141109248

How often does JM say to a potential client: "you're very comfortably off, you've got lots of money, best that you don't seek legal redress even though someone has wronged you".

QuestaVecchiaCasa · 23/07/2020 21:21

I find this statement from Maugham very hard to believe. He reckons that GC women won't debate this in public with him??? I could name half a dozen straight off who would crush him in a debate.

Binterested · 23/07/2020 22:00

He's getting quite a bit of pushback though. The tide has definitely begun to turn. People just aren't having it any more. The Day's snivelling attempt at apology got loads of retweets because it was so shit. It reached for more people than their original rubbish article. That in itself is helpful - it is more sunlight on the nonsense and dissembling tactics being used here.

ItsLateHumpty · 23/07/2020 22:28

How often does JM say to a potential client: "you're very comfortably off, you've got lots of money, best that you don't seek legal redress even though someone has wronged you".

Jolyon Maugham has created a bit of a conundrum if he believes, as it appears in that tweet, the wealthy shouldn’t use the courts to “sue their critics”.

And then here, in the same tweet thread says the poor can’t afford to use the courts to “sue their critics”

twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1286383741070344194
“It got sued for defamation and - although the case was pretty rubbish - it couldn't afford to fight and ceased trading.“

So either the courts should be empty or defending yourself in court is too costly.

As a learned QC I’m sure he could think of a simple way to make defending yourself affordable for the poor. But maybe that would actually cost him, so it’s really all too hard 🤔

PegasusReturns · 24/07/2020 07:32

That claim that many GC women have refused to debate him is outrageous! He blocks everyone.

110APiccadilly · 24/07/2020 07:48

Excuse me being distracted from the point but Wagner's Fifth Symphony? Is that their particular favourite, is it? Or do they actually know nothing at all about classical music except that Wagner is controversial and can't even be bothered to Google him?

Kit19 · 24/07/2020 08:02

Hahaha JM sighing that GC women won’t debate him. When he first started to woke at us, he got his arse handed to him several times on twitter. Since then all he’s done is block women who disagree with him

I’m sure the likes of Kathleen stock, Jane clare Jones, Emma Hilton & helen Joyce would be more than happy to debate him - I believe he’s blocked them all

Clymene · 24/07/2020 08:06

@110APiccadilly - read the original thread about the article I linked to. Some people were outraged about that Grin

110APiccadilly · 24/07/2020 08:35

Thanks @Clymene, I don't think I'd seen that thread when it first happened. I'm glad I'm not the only one to be annoyed by the Wagner thing. Obviously not the biggest problem with the piece, but it does imply their research was a little... sketchy, shall we say?

Helmetbymidnight · 24/07/2020 08:38

jolyon has blocked everyone who disagrees with him.
he really is a shit.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/07/2020 08:43

I think she's caused harm. I listen to the voices of vulnerable trans men and women and kids whose lives just got much more difficult.

jolyon.

Clymene · 24/07/2020 08:45

Apparently someone 'made time' last night to warn him she's very litigious. Not enough eye rolls. He's a total douche

nauticant · 24/07/2020 08:47

In other words framing her as an abuser and himself as a potential victim.

teawamutu · 24/07/2020 08:54

@nauticant

In other words framing her as an abuser and himself as a potential victim.
I think the fox thing is going to seriously impede that particular gambit.
Namechangetoavoidmra · 24/07/2020 09:04

This may be a conspiracy theory too far, but I smell a rat in how 2 days before The Day issued this apology, the Guardian was writing about how JKR Harry Potter sales had suffered “no dent” due to the “row” (which they and their writers were instrumental in stirring up) www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2020/jul/21/jk-rowling-book-sales-unaffected-by-transgender-views-row
Of course they don’t know that - we don’t know what the counter factual was; How many more books would she have sold during lock down without this BS?
To my mind, this is the guardian and friends getting their ducks in line to try and argue “no material damage” in a libel case.

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/07/2020 09:16

Oh god. Glad to see her lawyers are starting to sort this out.

LuluJakey1 · 24/07/2020 09:36

The Day is written by an ex-editor of The Daily Express, is recommended by the Department of Education and sold to schools to educate children about news. Say no more!

I can't believe schools subscribe to this but they obviously do. I don't want my DC being educated about news by an ex-editor of The Daily Express.

WeeBisom · 24/07/2020 09:53

I’m actually amazed at how stupid JM looks. He is a QC, and yet seems to be unaware that no one has a right to defame anyone else! If someone is defamed they have a right to seek redress in the court. It’s not “cancel culture” to hold a defamer to account. JM mentions a newspaper he supported that went under because it lost a defamation case. That’s a shame, but there are so many defences available to papers the only conclusion you can draw is that this paper seriously harmed someone’s reputation.

I do wonder if JM is angling for a fight with JK Rowling. He said something like he wouldn’t be surprised if she sued him, and he straight up said that in his view JK has harmed trans people. I bet he would love it if JK noticed him. Sadly for him I don’t think she cares.

hedgehogger1 · 24/07/2020 09:59

Is the original article still available and is the apology on it if it is?

nauticant · 24/07/2020 10:11

He is a QC, and yet seems to be unaware that no one has a right to defame anyone else!

He knows full well that anyone is entitled to use the law to defend themselves against defamation. (It helps if they can pay.) It's just that he doesn't like it when someone he disagrees with does it and, especially, when they're a woman.

nauticant · 24/07/2020 10:14

Someone linked to it upthread hedgehogger1:

Siablue · 24/07/2020 10:37

The fox killer is desperate for JKR to sue him. I am sure she has no interest in him. I can see that as a lawyer he lives for litigation but he does seem to spend an inordinate am out of time actively encouraging people to sue him.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 24/07/2020 10:54

I am astonished that so many people (including Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar apparently) don't understand the difference between 'free speech' and 'libel'!

2fallsagain · 24/07/2020 11:07

I haven't read the thread but I wanted to share SSAUK's comment on this. We first commented and shared after a parent contacting us about this article: here

We wrote to the Department of Education to complain about resources promoted and supported by them and included this as an example. We received a brush off from Nick Gibb who claimed the Department didn't support any such organisations. All information including our letter to the DfE and their response can be found here

We would really like parents to write to Gavin Williamson and Nick Gibb to ask them to address ALL of the questions we asked in our letter. Full letter is here.

Thank you, MPs need to know that parents are not happy about this and demand they answer our extremely reasonable questions about safeguarding.
