Apologies if there was a three as that I’ve missed but just in case...
This is horrifying. What parents would allow their children on an open zoom call with complete strangers? How woke are we to be literally sleepwalking through this?

This is hugely dodgy. Even if the charity has good intentions they have no idea who else might be logging on.

partystress · 22/07/2020 23:38

What on earth are Healthwatchdoing promoting this? Truly appalling given their remit. Their annual public meeting in Wolverhampton is on 29 July. Are there any local MNers who could go and ask about this?

notyourhandmaid · 22/07/2020 23:48

Sinister AF.

ShinyFootball · 23/07/2020 00:58

Woah.

And let's not do the blame the parents. (Often shorthand for mothers).

Plenty of kids have smartphones laptops etc and parents who don't know or understand the risks/ CBA / etc etc

This is on the people who organised it. 100%.

ShinyFootball · 23/07/2020 00:58

6-12 FFS

what are they thinking

ShinyFootball · 23/07/2020 01:01

Don't they realise that as a ?charity aimed at young children who may be going through difficulties, giving the message that chatting to whoever on the net who says they can help us a TOTAL FUCKING NO-NO

NotBadConsidering · 23/07/2020 03:19

Just when you think you can’t be shocked any more, along comes this Shock

ItsLateHumpty · 23/07/2020 03:47

Surely most of that target audience would not have a clue what any of the intended content even meant, so who was sighing /joining up for them? Or did they participate because they thought the Zoom was about Harry Potter for eg because they understood the talk to be about JK Rowlings?

Also, if you think you’re actually ’on message’, why plant a couple of sympathetic audience members (pretending to be kids) to ask the ‘right’ questions, make the ‘right’ noises?

Nothing to worry about at all Shock

Meeting announcement for Healthwatch Wolverhampton

An open Zoom call aimed at 6-12 year olds to talk about gender and JKR
XXSex · 23/07/2020 07:48

There’s another zoom call on at 2 today. No idea who or what age it’s target audience is.

I'd bet my life savings that every single one of the "women" guest speakers on that zoom is a middle aged man. Are we allowed to start using the G word yet? How much worse does it have to get before we can start using the G word?

highame · 23/07/2020 08:42

They'd better be a bit careful just in case JKR comes after them too, wonder if she knows about this. The Day's big apology should be taken on board by lots of groups.

Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey

IloveJKRowling · 23/07/2020 09:00

Do children of 6 really have smartphones that they can access unsupervised? Most people I know allow phones from secondary age only (so 11 at the earliest).

Well, learn something (disturbingly) new every day I suppose.....

IloveJKRowling · 23/07/2020 09:02

I agree that the people who organised this are 100% to blame. I'm just surprised they got an audience and one which was very young from the sound of it. Maybe Humpty is right and the JKR hook is what did it.

MrsJamin · 23/07/2020 09:33

They might as well have asked 6 year olds if they'd like to see some puppies.

ThroughThoroughThoughTough · 23/07/2020 09:35

ILove I have kids in that age bracket and yes, quite a few kids that age do have effectively unlimited access to the internet. More so over lockdown. But also because unless you’re quite IT savvy you wouldn’t know you needed to lock down things like your smart TV, protect adult or shared devices with hard to guess codes and / or separate logins AND put regularly updated net nanny software on all kids devices. And even then, that wouldn’t necessarily stop them using zoom, it depends how you set the security settings. And JKR is a massive hook, especially for the younger end of that age group.

Shock

Dd2s school set up a 2 zoom calls. The instructions were - you must be in a living space. No bedrooms. A parent/adult must be present we will ask them to give us a wave....

Surely thats how its meant to be done?

IloveJKRowling · 23/07/2020 09:45

Surely thats how its meant to be done?

You'd think. Also, the black screens where people were listening but you couldn't see who they were - huge safeguarding fail. Anyone could have been watching those kids. It seems that one person on the call was probably an adult posing as a child (a deliberate shill from the looks of it).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/07/2020 10:13

Maybe a shout out to Prof Stephen Whittle OBE, trustee, transman, might get some traction!

MrsJamin · 23/07/2020 10:28

@CuriousaboutSamphire are you sure that's the same Stephen Whittle?

Melroses · 23/07/2020 10:49

Whittle is a "patron"

Thingybob · 23/07/2020 10:51

Can I just point out that there is nothing to suggest there is anything inappropriate about the LGBT+ Sparkle Zoom meetings and the connection with SW or Healthwatch. Nowhere on that flyer does it say that these events are aimed at children so could well be 18+ as Sparkle is a charity for transgender people of all ages.

The Sparkle events are completely separate to the Zoom call highlighted in the OP which was aimed at 6-12 years. That appears to be something that was set up by an individual/organisation in the US.

Melroses · 23/07/2020 11:06

schoolclosures.org/ - US

Someone from here was present

PasstheBucket89 · 23/07/2020 11:22

the whole thing is so mind bending inappropriate, but also apart from playing video games do they really think 6 years olds are trawling the Internet for this, stuff,? its all so odd.

SunsetBeetch · 23/07/2020 11:31

@MrsJamin

Healthwatch have totally drunk the kool-aid, surveys they provide just have a question about "what is your gender identity?" with nothing about your sex. This is horrendous, who is the safeguarding officer for Healthwatch?
That is really concerning. Healthwatch really should know better.
