I cancelled my subscription over their Corbyn coverage and I'm not even a Labour member! But I expected the Guardian to provide fair reporting and they were blatantly biased. It was a sign that pushing certain lines was more important to them than intellectual honesty. In a way, their position on trans issues was just the natural conclusion of that determination to push a particular view despite any evidence to the contrary and to try to create an echo chamber enforced by a sense of moral superiority. It's not what I buy newspapers for. I value open debate, sound research and intellectual honesty.

boatyardblues · 16/07/2020 17:55

I didn't leave the Guardian, the Guardian left me.

Same here. I used to love the Guardian and the Saturday edition was the only one we bought after it went digital. I’m sad about the decent journalists and the “what was lost” aspect, as the Guardian used to do really good investigative journalism and long reads, but it is hard to lament the passing of the paper in its current form. It’s really lost its way.

IloveJKRowling · 16/07/2020 17:56

That twitter thread has cheered me up a great deal :)

Floisme · 16/07/2020 18:02

If I were Katharine Viner I'd be going round to Ben's and taking the Twitter keys off him. Every time he tweets he loses them more subscriptions.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 16/07/2020 18:05

It's as if I wanted to persuade people of the truth of Christianity, and began by saying: "Jesus is the son of God." It's putting the conclusion first, ahead of the actual argument.

Exactly. It's starting a conversation with atheists by invoking the holy ghost. Thend
saying we can all get along fine if you just repeat after me the correct words and promise to be quiet about transubstantiation and physics.

(No offence, Christians, I appreciate most don't take these things as thumpingly literally as Ben appears to be taking the trans catechism.)

But yikes, guardian, you don't half make yourselves hard to feel sorry for.

TheRealMcKenna · 16/07/2020 18:08

“I never denied biological reality”.

There it is - he’s a confirmed white supremacist!

TheRealMcKenna · 16/07/2020 18:12

(No offence, Christians, I appreciate most don't take these things as thumpingly literally as Ben appears to be taking the trans catechism.)

Christians can cope with people disagreeing with them and their beliefs without calling them Nazis or fascists.

The Wokestazi are to liberals what the Westboro Baptist Church are to Christians - an extreme sect that make the rest look bad and make a very loud noise.

stumbledin · 16/07/2020 18:18

Katharine Viner was in post long before Ben and Owen and at the time stated: "Queer politics inform every party of my life" and as the editor has had every opportunity to commission, employ and promote those who write articles that fit her queer perspective.

Dont forget it was the growth of queer politics in universities that was the start of the back lash against women's liberation, substituted gender for sex and legitimised "choice" rather than facts.

So unfortunately for other women it has been under the editorship of KV that the Guardian dumped on it feminist credentials and joined forces with the rainbow warriors.

(And as has been said above their all undermining of Corbyn has caused many others to leave them. There is an Independent article about the Guardian staff cuts and most of them are saying what has been said here about drop in journalistic standards, but also their anti Corbyn smears.)

PronounssheRa · 16/07/2020 18:19

I supported valid gender identity in the face of hostility to it. I want all women to be safe and have a voice.

I have no clue what he is getting at with the first part of this or how that relates to his claim he has never denied biological reality , while the second is an outright lie. Ben signed the Suzanne moore letter.

Ben doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, wonder if he had been on a training course Confused

Gotta love the Baroness.

wellbehavedwomen · 16/07/2020 19:15

Old fashioned chauvinists don't necessarily hate women. They are the beneficiaries of a world view that holds women to be inferior, and they don't like being reminded of the fact, but they aren't necessarily motivated by personal dislike of women: they just favour the status quo because it benefits them.

Woke bros, on the other hand, are fully aware of patriarchy and, on paper, opposed to it. But they don't really want to overturn it because, just like the old-fashioned chauvinists, they benefit from it. Dilemma. This means they have to find a whole other raft of excuses not to listen to women. In the good ole days pre-about 2005, this was a bit tricky - they had to rely on telling women that their rights were important, but not as important as black/gay/working-class people - we were going to get their full support just as soon as those priority issues were sorted. But then, What light on yonder window breaks? It is transgenderism, come to save woke men from the risk of one day having to centre women. Now they can support women: just the ones with penises, not those pesky ones with vaginas. Problem solved.

Completely this.

IveSeenThings · 16/07/2020 19:26

I like the way he's giving his own tweets marks... Not sure if rate them so highly Wink

Will they have any subscribers left if he's allowed on twitter again tomorrow?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 16/07/2020 19:33

That twitter thread is beautiful. Every single tweet tipped to bits.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 16/07/2020 19:33

ripped to bits.

WeeBisom · 16/07/2020 19:45

Why does Ben, and others like him, always urge women to speak to trans women (“understand the difficulty of their identity, their joys, their fears”) like this is some kind of panacea that will magically make women think that males can change sex? Incidentally, I’ve known two women (plus myself) who became even more gender critical after talking to trans women because of the way they behaved! Yes, Ben, we have spoken to trans people and we still don’t think they’ve changed sex!

Lordamighty · 16/07/2020 19:50

But any debate needs to come from a place of compassion where the fact of trans women’s existence and womanhood is honoured.

So no debate then. If you are wanting a debate whilst simultaneously declaring the outcome of the debate in advance then it is just a lecture. Women know your place and honour trans women’s womanhood. Honestly, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 16/07/2020 20:00

It's like an abusive relationship where the victim keeps telling themselves that things will get better against all evidence to the contrary.

I want the Guardian to be better, but it doesn't want to change. I left it years ago.

DeRigueurMortis · 16/07/2020 20:01

Exactly.

The context in which this debate happens has to be on men's terms.

It has to centre men's feelings.

Fuck that👊🏻

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/07/2020 20:10

Greet analysis, MrsNoah

Yes it's saved many men from having to give a shit about women.

Binterested · 16/07/2020 20:11

Great idea Ben. Let's have an MN webchat with Pips Bunce Grin. We'll all learn so much about what Mr Bunce thinks his womanhood is about (MNHQ I'm allowed to say he because he is a he on a Thursday and today is Thursday so we are good).

If Pips isn't available, let's have Aimee Challoner. Or Jess Bradley. Or even Karen White. They've all got good stories to tell about what womanhood means to them.

Or we could have someone a bit less - headline making, shall we say. Otherwise you'll claim I'm cherry-picking the participants. So let's have Jane Fae. Oh I've just remembered they won't debate with women because it's too scary and we are a danger to the extreme porn campaigner. So let's have Shon Fae - the one who loves womanhood so much they've extolled women to "Enjoy your erasure". Ok so, Lily Madigan? Is that a go? Let me know when we can make this happen and I'll pencil it in Hmm Grin

Lordamighty · 16/07/2020 20:12

Yes exactly, Fuck that 👊

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/07/2020 20:14

Oh yes, Binterested let's line them up!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 16/07/2020 20:16

Pipe Bunce gets on my tits - what a grotesque parody. If I turned up to work in my professional job in the City people would be having words Angry
