And it looks like she wants to set up a campaigning group

Ooh are they? I'm v split as the greens are also doing this. Not sure who to join!

DorisLessingsCat · 15/07/2020 10:55

Sorry, yes, skim read. WEP UK are all TWAW.

WPUK are, I think, the closest to a universal women's rights movement but they (as I understand it) come from the left so some may feel they do not represent them? Personally IDGAF, we just need the best women for the job!

NonnyMouse1337 · 15/07/2020 11:01

Sorry I've not been following all the developments on Twitter. The Baroness talks about organising a Women's Rights movement for a year - does anyone know what is the rough action plan, what might be involved etc. She does have a lot of influence in the political side of things and has contacts, access to networks and knows how the system works. So what is the role of the other women joining in? What would we be likely to help with?

Apologies if the questions are very basic - I'm not exactly sure what's being discussed!

RoyalCorgi · 15/07/2020 11:02

There are already campaigning groups, though - Woman's Place UK and Fair Play for Women being the main two.

Daughterofmabel · 15/07/2020 11:04

WPUK are all about the trans. There's no hope there
Definatley not!

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/07/2020 11:08

I’m in. I shall email her.

The Baroness said only recently that even if Self ID is knocked on the head (I pray that it will be) and even if the law stops children from being rushed down the path of experimental medicalisation, institutional capture in government, councils, schools, retailers, refuges, you name it, is already so embedded that it would take a year or two of concerted action to clean up.

That's what I think she is referring to and that's why I've emailed, asking to join.

Liz Truss's announcement is due imminently as we know and although we can't know for sure what it will definitely say, it won't be the end. Just the beginning of the end.

happydappy2 · 15/07/2020 11:48

I've emailed her. So much has happened under the radar it will take a lot of work to sort this mess out. We need people with clout to achieve the following

get men out of womens prisons
keep single sex spaces properly single sex (including Girl guides, Hampstead ladies pond, hospital wards)
womens only bathrooms (not mixed sex)
stop the teaching of gender identity in schools
stop the medical experimentation on children
defund mermaids & stonewall
stop crimes committed by men being recorded as if by women
get men out of womens sports when sex matters
Repeal or reform the GRA-no man should be given the legal status of woman
expand the bandwidth of being male so trans women are included in mens facilities, not forced into womens spaces
Stop the push to commercialise surrogacy

All this must be cemented in law so any incoming government can't simply change the rules (as I fear Labour would.)

There's probably more that I've missed?

risefromyourgrave · 15/07/2020 11:48

@risefromyourgrave

Oh this is excellent, I’m all the way in! *@PaleBlueMoonlight* Baroness Nicholson has tweeted the email [email protected], not sure if that’s the one you say looks like a general one?
Just realised I forgot to put the ‘e’ on the end of Nicholson for the email address, so ignore my post!

I just find this really exasperating. WPUK was founded in September 2017 and in the space of just under three years has held dozens of packed-out meetings around the country, contributed to consultations, met with politicians, maintained a high social media profile and significantly changed the discourse on this topic. I very much welcome Nicholson's interest in and concern about the issue, but a good deal of the important work has already been done. We're not starting from scratch and, guess what, major change will take - has taken - more than a year.

growinggreyer · 15/07/2020 11:53

@happydappy2 That is an excellent list. I would add, investigate the actual quality of education being provided in gender studies depts in universities throughout the UK. Is what is being taught in sync with the work that the biology dept etc teach. (hint, it isn't!)

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 15/07/2020 11:54

womens only bathrooms..

We would need to build another bathroom in our house!

Of course I'm joking. But what I'm also doing is playfully pointing out that here we call them toilets.

Are you American?

happydappy2 · 15/07/2020 11:57

To be specific, toilets, changing rooms, showers-anywhere women are undressing.

Thing is, though, WPUK is left-leaning. Not a criticism - given what has been going on in Labour, it is wonderful to have a left-leaning RF group with union connections. But there is room for groups with more reach into Conservative politics too.

Yes, I agree. And hopefully there might be opportunities to collaborate on single issue stuff.

endofthelinefinally · 15/07/2020 12:04

In my view it is a case of the more the merrier. As long as there is collaboration and communication. It is about reaching out and informing people of all political persuasions.
So many people are still in blissful ignorance.

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 15/07/2020 12:21

Just to be clear, I agree with everything you said happydappy2

highame · 15/07/2020 12:25

I think the agenda should be absolutely clear with no ambiguity and no pile ons. This is all a mess and needs some clear vision. Tagging on to an existing organisation or party which supports TWAW would be unforgivable. I think the Baroness has a clear idea about the parameters. Muddying the waters will not work. All women, all over the country, nothing less will do of all political persuasions.

I like many others am really angry with what has happened

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/07/2020 12:33

I don't have Twitter so I will email her

teawamutu · 15/07/2020 12:41

WPUK have been immense - this is a chance to really build a cross party consensus based on the progress they've already made.

Roseburn · 15/07/2020 12:41

Im not on twitter so I've emailed asking to join.

ValancyRedfern · 15/07/2020 12:50

WPUK are amazing. I wonder if the Baroness doesn't feel able to align with them as they are very much a left wing organisation? I wonder if they may also feel disinclined to unit with her for that reason. I think there is room for multiple organisations as long and they compliment and don't fight against each other.

CaveMum · 15/07/2020 13:01

I don’t think the Baroness has political affiliation issues on this, several people have tweeted her asking if they can join even if they are Labour supporters and she has welcomed them.

It might be that a new movement with a political figurehead will carry more weight right now? There’s nothing to say that various groups like WPUK, FPFW, SSA, etc can’t all work together on this but it needs political muscle to drive it forward and the a Baroness brings that.

happydappy2 · 15/07/2020 13:12

The forced use of specific pro nouns is also extremely problematic for me....not being able to call a male a male, is a safeguarding nightmare. For a rape victim to have to testify against her attacker using female pro nouns is untenable. Preferred pro nouns is compelled speech. Not being able to use language to accurately describe the situation is a huge pert of the problem. Transexual male is accurate. Trans woman is misleading.

MsMarvellous · 15/07/2020 13:27

I replied on twitter and got an actual like from the actual baroness. I feel all warm and cosy.
