I genuinely thought this was a parody account.

This is 100% part and parcel of the compromise some have been willing to make on the word 'woman'. It's fine, they said, what does it matter if we say TWAW, we'll just focus on the word 'female' and 'woman' can be a broader, cultural term that TW can be part of.

As was said repeatedly when this linguistic capitulation was first suggested, if you give up 'woman' in an attempt to keep 'female', you will be required to give up female too eventually. If we give up female and call ourselves Slomtrimpets, we will be required to cede that soon enough.

Please, wake up. There is no legitimate human rights battle that requires an oppressed class to relinquish their language. We are women, we are adult human females, and we are the only humans who can have a cervix or cervical cancer.

As an aside, I'm not on twitter so look at everything in a web browser, and I've noticed (last week or so) that rather than listing numbers for replies, retweets and likes separately, they're now lumping replies and retweets into a single number. My inner conspiracy theorist is of course thinking "so they want to stop people calculating the 'ratio'!"

I agree it's a ridiculous photo, but more worrying is if there are any young woman or older ones that havent had a smear test and they see that it's either going to scare them off like fuck are they putting that microscope in me ! or when they do go to the docs they may think the test is been done wrong because a microscope isn't been used.
I would hope that any woman could ask or look it up on line before they go but I think that would not always be the case.
In either case it is irresponsible and misleading

The comments in response on Twitter are almost universally condemnatory, which is great cause for hope. Nobody is buying this science denying nonsense, thank goodness.
And as the critics are mainly male, they are not receiving the rape and death threats so familiar to women who challenge this dogma. Time and sunlight are all that’s needed to make people lose patience with this erasure of women’s rights to our own language and spaces. Hopefully at that point we can have a sensible discussion about third spaces, to accommodate the trans community without taking away women’s hard won freedoms.

This is the problem with telling kind social lies: the demands that everyone pretend just get bigger and bigger, and all words lose all meaning. Really sorry guys but the facts are going to have to be faced however you feel about them. You can say TWAW, but female is a biological fact, not a choice of identity. Only human biological females have cervixes. Some female people prefer to be known as men, which is their business, but it does nothing to change their femaleness or the fact they have a cervix. Some male people prefer to be known as women, which is their business, but it does nothing to change their maleness, and they do not have a cervix.

And your personal issues with reality and its unfair boundaries should not be the main focus of a health campaign needed by half the human race, almost all of whom know perfectly well what sex they are. Because other people have needs too.

I wondered about the photo too. Is the doctor meant to be examining electrons? For what reason, exactly? Perhaps she's looking for proof of the newly discovered male cervix, quietly confident that her Nobel is in the bag?

Also, that hairnet is doing fuck all when you have a big thick fringe hanging out the front.

Re the microscope in the photo.

I had a colposcopy and cryo cauterisation last year for wobbly cervical cells.

They use the microscope to do those procedures, it doesn't go inside you, it stays on the outside and in combination with bright lights helps the examiner check for changes to the cervix

I think you’re right MrsWednesday as I had something similar during a colposcopy.

When i started looking at some trans related threads on FWR i was like many people, middle of the road (And i still am to a certain Extent)

And i did see some posters making the arguement that ‘woman’ as a term was just a social thing, that it could be handed over so transwomen could just be women and the word female would be used instead, legally and socially and IN MEDICAL LITERATURE etc

And i thought ‘ that sounds ok’ quite reasonable
