Pink news: "Disgusting transphobic lie" that 'only females get cervical cancer'

According to PinkNews "UK's biggest cervical cancer charity shuts down disgustingly transphobic lie that 'only females get cervical cancer'"

I genuinely thought this was a parody account.
Honestly I think satire is dead now.

@Thingybob

According to the article other people are at risk from cervical cancer including trans women who have had gender confirmation surgery
That can't be right though?

They don't have a cervix, so...?

If they get cancer wouldn't it be cancer of whatever their neovagina was made from?

OldCrone · 15/07/2020 03:04

There's a link to this site from the article.

www.cancer.ca/en/prevention-and-screening/reduce-cancer-risk/find-cancer-early/screening-in-lgbtq-communities/trans-women-and-cervical-cancer-screening/?region=on

It talks about transwomen who have a "neo-cervix". Really?

Goosefoot · 15/07/2020 03:12

But the treatment/outcomes etc for different types of cancer are not the same. You couldn't treat penile cancer, say, as cervical cancer, even if it's part f a "neo-cervix". The oncologist knows very well it's not cervical cancer.

Am I way off?

AnyOldPrion · 15/07/2020 03:40

You’re not way off Goosefoot. There’s no such thing as a “neocervix” anyway. There’s no reason for having a cervix, which is a very specific structure which has a narrow passage at the lower end of the uterus which is designed to stretch during childbirth. There is no equivalent. It might be possible that cancer can occur within inverted penile tissue, and presumably it should be checked now and then, but cervical cancer it ain’t!

YessicaHaircut · 15/07/2020 03:46

There are some brilliant comments on the Twitter thread. People are getting tired of the bullshit.

Honestly I'd believe World Weekly News with such gems as Tom Cruise is an space alien and Woman gives birth to a spatula over anything that Prick News publishes. Grin

Packingsoapandwater · 15/07/2020 07:42

The bizarre thing about all this is that the cervix is a term we use for part of the uterus. PN seem to be suggesting that TW who have had certain forms of SRS have acquired an organ that would be impossible.

I've been watching this debate for the last six years, and I'm becoming more and more convinced it's some massive game of "fuck you" against society, played by sociopathic trolls and bored Silicon Valley billionaires - - only it's got way out of control and is seriously fucking with a huge number of people's lives now.

Winesalot · 15/07/2020 07:43

Since transwomen may get neo-vagina cancer, it is neo-vagina cancer. If people are reduced to body parts at least be very accurate in its description. No transwoman can develop vagina cancer they may develop neo-vagina cancer though.

And unless it becomes ethical to transplant a female’s cervix into a male, they cannot develop cervical cancer. If transmen feel that they need to deny their biological reality by changing the sex marker on their medical records to miss Pap smears then this becomes an indication that the need for a review of treatment for gender dysphoria. It means people are being left without even the resilience to cope with their medical reality and are willingly putting themselves at risk all for the sake of being allowed to deny this biological reality.

A reality we are told no activist or transgender person is denying. When will they stop denying this lie?

And believing that you were female from birth when in fact you are a male and do not have a DSD is still denying biological sex. And believing that sexual is on some magic spectrum of maleness and femaleness is still denying biological sex because that is a model that is unlikely to be considered more accurate for explaining sex in humans than the current binary model.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/07/2020 07:55

I got a letter from my doctors surgery yesterday inviting me to come for my smear.

Praise the lord it said ‘women’ and that I could ask for a female doctor or nurse.

Ditto when I went for my mammogram (at the time when some male on twitter was having a tantrum because he couldn’t attend a mammogram clinic with his female companion).

tilder · 15/07/2020 07:55

Any body part can have cancer. Cervical cancer only happens in a cervix.

Cervical screening saves lives. Advertising for cervical screening needs to be really clear. So those at risk know and hopefully go for screening. Any lack of clarity around who should be screened is a bad thing.

Not everyone knows what the word cervix means, especially if English is not your first language.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/07/2020 07:57

I can’t believe that any person - anyone - would quibble with correct terminology being used when it comes to cancer. I don’t want people pushy footing around - I want clear, precise language that tells me what I have, at what level and exactly where. No euphemisms, ‘inclusive’ language (that you need to work out what it actually means) or gaslighting, thank you very much.

tilder · 15/07/2020 07:58

Also, I'm not sure taking a swab would help detect cancer in a neovagina (is that correct terminology?). Would depend what tissue had been used to create it, how susceptible to cancer that tissue is and how that tissue is tested. Unless it is just about validation.

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/07/2020 08:08

So interesting when the average man sees this shit. They see straight through it and call bullshit straight away. You know why? Because they’re not conditioned to #bekind

Esspee · 15/07/2020 08:11

The comments about the article on Twitter are brilliant.

queenofknives · 15/07/2020 08:24

Google are funding them.

WTF????????????

Wow. That's utterly insane. Talk about institutional capture. The MRA movement is funded by institutions.

Meanwhile, women are funded by... women.

That's some David and Goliath shit right there.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/07/2020 08:24

Excited post, @Winesalot. Exactly what I was going to say, but much clearer!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/07/2020 08:25

Excellent, not excited! Fuck me, I need to get new thumbs. Or a new phone with a less eager auto correct.

Jocasta2018 · 15/07/2020 08:28

As well as 'developing' a cervix, do trans women lose their prostates as well?
Always made me wonder if surgically transitioned trans women have their prostates removed!

moose62 · 15/07/2020 08:36

Even on the NHS screening advice page it states "if you are a trans woman or non binary person assigned male at birth, you will not need to be screened as you do not have a cervix.".

BaronessWrongCrowd · 15/07/2020 08:38

The NHS is spouting 'assigned at birth'? FFS!

nancybotwinbloom · 15/07/2020 08:39

I just wonder how long it will take until a TW becomes seriously ill or dies because of a prostrate or medical condition only a man can become ill with. Then they or someone will sue the nhs for not spotting it/making them aware they need a check because they asked for letters about a smear they don't need.

I've just been charged a fiver for 8 tampons because I've come on in a hotel and I had to buy them. Show me one TW that's happened to.

bluebluezoo · 15/07/2020 08:43

That picture is hilarious.

Shows how much they know about “womens issues”. They really don’t use a microscope to look at the cervix while in the body.

I mean, what sort of wierd microscope attachment would you need? Have they never heard of a speculum? And come on, if they do need to look “live time” as with colposcopies they use a camera and a screen...

A fucking microscope in front of a person with splayed legs, really?

FloralBunting · 15/07/2020 08:46

nancy, arguments like that 'reduce women to biology' apparently. Which we are told is very bad, but not quite as bad as suggesting male people don't have female reproductive systems. That's bigotry, apparently.

AlCalavicci · 15/07/2020 08:46

I wonder how many transmen are going to complain that they are missing out on testicular and prostrate cancer checks . Or how many trans men /women are going to have a rib added / removed.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/07/2020 08:46

@BaronessWrongCrowd

The NHS is spouting 'assigned at birth'? FFS!
How does this ‘assignment’ work? Is it just a guess or is there a coin flip? Do several members of NHS staff get into a huddle and debate? Do private medical facility staff have the same ‘training’? What if a baby is born at home - does mamma and papa get to make the call? When does non binary come into it?

So many questions (never answered).
