So, you're either new to the rough and tumble of feminist discourse, or you've been knocking about these parts for quite a while. You're feeling bruised and downcast because of the ongoing, relentless nature of sexism and woman-hatred in our culture, and you're wondering what hope there is?

Take heart from my 15 year old daughter, who has developed a taste during lockdown, for engaging in online discussions about women's rights online. This evening, she had a long back and forth about the statistics around rape, and how important women's clear boundaries were, and when the other people involved started using personal insults, she wrote "I have made my case, and you can agree or disagree. But to demonstrate to you what a clear boundary is, I am going to block you, and you can observe what it is to hear a firm no. Please take that knowledge into the rest of your life."

Next generation, wims. We keep going!

Wow. I am in awe of your daughter. I wish that I had the knowledge and the confidence when I was a teenager to be so assertive. Good on you and her.

The ability to deliver a firm no has to be one of the greatest assets a young woman can possess today. I applaud your daughter and her amazing mum!

Pretty awesome response from your daughter. Clearly she's learned a lot from you. I would never had that level of maturity and confidence at 15. Smile

JemimaShore · 13/07/2020 10:26

Excellent response - women's right to say no is fundamental to feminism.

See this tweet also:

"Best reason for women to not let penises into our private spaces: WE DON’T FUCKING WANT TO. We are grown-ass humans, not toddlers. We don’t have to justify ourselves to you. Our boundaries aren’t a democracy; you don’t get a vote. We don’t owe you shit."

Which I thought put it rather well.
