From Penis News, but hopefully this link won't give them revenues:

@ThatsHowWeRowl

Interesting...... Is it too much to hope that the tide is turning?
I think that is as likely as Canute being successful Sad
TehBewilderness · 11/07/2020 02:45

They also just ran a hit piece on Jo Rowling lying about what she wrote.
Easy to get away with lying about celebrities in the US, but not so easy in the UK.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/07/2020 06:39

Hmm interesting Fanny.

I took down a screen shot I'd added upthread as I wasn't sure if it was a good idea having it there, but they've installed denial of service cloudflare software on the website which I think is some sort of protection thing? I've never seen it before.

It worried me a bit, don't know much about it stuff but I do assume they have a particularly politically minded team.

EweSurname · 11/07/2020 06:41

It seems too optimistic to think that this is the BBC taking a considered approach to safeguarding rather than maintenance or updating content.

And even if it was, it again seems unlikely that it would remain down, especially as it’s been noticed!

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/07/2020 06:54

Something I've noticed is that they've removed a lot of the press releases in response to a number of newspaper articles going back a few years, where the responses were very revealing.

I was just looking for one I remember that stated that mermaids follow a model of affirmation, as advocated by some worldwide trans healthcare thing (basically not the nhs) and it's not on the new website. So all those times articles responses, where they were responding to certain claims, are not there. They've hidden any controversy and also hidden the fact that they don't actually align with the nhs model of watchful waiting (though I think even the nhs don't.)

Pisses me off they do CAHMS training too.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/07/2020 06:57

I do know there are people at the bbc who are concerned with all this; I have no idea if they have a voice.

Possibly it's been removed if the bbc realise mermaids don't actually align with the nhs and the law.

I noticed the professional training includes medical pathways.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/07/2020 07:03

*i highly doubt the bbc have actually removed permanently it though....

Unless they really did learn from Savile.,

SocialConnection · 11/07/2020 07:19

@Apileofballyhoo

AGP.

AnyOldPrion · 11/07/2020 07:27

Is this the page? If so, they appear to be back.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3hWKnzF4xGnZ0SmtJvWvByP/information-and-support

AnyOldPrion · 11/07/2020 07:31

Apologies, ignore my last post. That was a specific page following a Louis Theroux programme. This must be the page in question, and it is still currently empty.

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/07/2020 07:34

Very interesting, any lgbt issue raised in progs leads to this page. So the T is included, stonewall are listed but not specifically gender identity and it's more about sexuality.

AnyOldPrion · 11/07/2020 07:47

Very interesting. It may well be that they are doing some kind of maintenance or check, but none of the other pages are blank. Unlikely, of course, that they’d remove all four permanently, but if they know something is coming and anticipate removing one, but don’t want to draw attention to that, then the only thing to do in the meantime would be for the whole page to be removed.

Of course it’s equally likely it’s a glitch and everything will go back up in a day or two, cue much crowing on Twitter and some mocking posts about Mumsnetters and their crazy speculation.

ChattyLion · 11/07/2020 08:50

Anyone else think that there is an internal battle brewing?

Yes, regardless of the outcome with these specific links. This is a culture war and so many institutions have been captured, each of those will have to have these sorts of conversations with staff about what policies they have, what endorsements or advice they give on these issues.
Obviously the BBC is one of the most publicly visible and nationally iconic.
But this discussion needs to happen in all captured organisations, so their position can be brought back into line with good safeguarding practice, good medical practice and the Equality Act etc.

TorkTorkBam · 11/07/2020 10:41

I still think their lawyers made them take it down.

Apileofballyhoo · 11/07/2020 11:08

Yep, social, but thought they didn't mention that there were different reasons...

Binglebong · 11/07/2020 14:11

Thanks Humpty.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/07/2020 14:21

mermaids follow a model of affirmation, as advocated by some worldwide trans healthcare thing (basically not the nhs)

That was the wpath thing, perhaps?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3414279-Can-we-talk-about-WPATH

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/07/2020 17:14

Hm. This is interesting, now that I see another page on 'LGBT' is still up, with links to Stonewall and LGBT helpline, etc. But all the links gone from 'gender identity'. If they were doing routine maintenance, surely all the pages would be down? Only the one, though ....

ListeningQuietly · 11/07/2020 17:30

There is something odd at Mermaids ...

This page
beta.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details?regid=1160575&subid=0
says that the 2019 accounts were qualified
but on page 19 here
apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Accounts/Ends75/0001160575_AC_20190331_E_C.PDF
they are not qualified
BUT
the 2018 accounts say that the Independent examiners report is on page 6 here
apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Accounts/Ends75/0001160575_AC_20180331_E_C.PDF
but page 6 is missing from the PDF

and they changed accountants between 2018 and 2019
very odd

BitOfFun · 11/07/2020 18:06

Can you explain for the dummies at the back, please, @ListeningQuietly?

McDuffy · 11/07/2020 18:49

Ooh listening this is my area of expertise! Good spot. I'll have a nose later.

ListeningQuietly · 11/07/2020 18:50

Bitoffun
I'd need to read thoroughly and check all of the notes
but I'd guess as somebody who is an examiner of charity accounts that the accountants did not agree with the way grants were used and how grants were allocated to overheads (staff primarily)

so they changed accountants but the new ones have allowed a misleading impression to be on the CharCom website

delays and disagreements are always a red flag ....

blubellsarebells · 11/07/2020 18:52

More red flags around mermaids?
Well I never.
