There is nothing in the letter mentioning trans women. Since when are people who sign a document/letter expected to have anything in common except the text?

And why does a signature of a co-worker on a letter against cancel culture make you feel “unsafe”?

The world is crazy.

I posted about this on the Wild Womens Writers Club thread.
I had the exact same thoughts. Why would you feel unsafe because your colleague signed a letter calling for free speech and an end to the associated cancel culture.
The self absorbion in that tweet is mind blowing.

AnyOldPrion · 09/07/2020 18:30

I’m afraid I don’t believe all these claims of feeling unsafe. I have a suspicion what is felt is rage, but that wouldn’t fit the oppression narrative.

I mean how can knowing someone who agrees with you signing the same statement as someone who disagrees with you make you feel “unsafe”? I mean what’s the mechanism for harm from a signature on a declaration?

Unhappy I could believe, but unsafe makes no sense whatsoever.

Goosefoot · 09/07/2020 18:34

Yes, I have come to believe that most claims of feeling unsafe are calculated.

MollyAtTheFolly · 09/07/2020 18:36

She's got quite a lot to say, hasn't she?

It's all 'me, me, me' though.

I particularly like the irony of trying to shut down someone for signing a letter re: free speech because some other people who signed the letter had a different opinion.

Nuts.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 09/07/2020 18:36

Sorry classic, I didn’t see that, I just came across it. It is mind blowing.

The level of sensitivity is insane.

And the thought that once signing a document also makes you responsible for all opinions of all other co-signatories is ridiculous.

It's really going to fuck change.org if everyone refused to sign until they had checked all previous (?and potential future) signatories for party voting record/view on abortion/capital punishment/income tax rates/bridleways/refuse collection days.

Single issue politics has its limitations.

AnyOldPrion · 09/07/2020 18:44

Predictably I’m blocked. Anyone have an archived version or screenshot?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 09/07/2020 18:49

It's interesting. Lot's of echoes of white fragility language.

@emilyvdw retweeted this as part of her case:

The replies to @LLW902 are heart warming.

Broomfondle · 09/07/2020 18:54

She admits he's never been anything but kind to her.
Just proves that #bekind is not enough, as it's not total capitulation.
Except is it even capitulation if the letter had nothing to do with her personally? That's just...endorsing an opinion? And that's too much. Sigh.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/07/2020 18:54

Fred Sargeant is not impressed. 'Full throttle performance victimhood.'

It's incredle really, I still get amazed by the ego involved. You'd think I'd have learnt by now.

classicspring · 09/07/2020 18:57

Actually I am not sure if that was for the management of Vox or for all of us who simply thought it was simply about free speech.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/07/2020 18:57

I never understand how, with a healthy mindset, you can expect others to maintain your emotional safety for you? Boundary issues there, and unrealistic expectations of others picking up what should be your responsibility.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 09/07/2020 18:58

Quick, pass her the smelling salts....

PennyNotSoWise · 09/07/2020 19:02

Has 'unsafe' gone and got itself a new definition along with 'woman' then?

classicspring Grin at that edited letter. If you have to manually insert the word 'trans' into a piece of writing at least 16 times, there may be a slight chance the piece was never about trans people in the first place.

HermioneWeasley · 09/07/2020 19:04

If someone signing a perfectly reasonable letter makes you feel “unsafe” then you need therapy, not for everyone to shut up

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 09/07/2020 19:06

That is a great tweet nauticant. I wonder if that genuinely is how many trans people feel? That even the minor association several degrees removed can shake their confidence?

I cannot get my head round this.
OhMsBeliever · 09/07/2020 19:11

I inserted my name into that letter and now I feel personally targeted by all the people who signed it. Of course it's definitely all about me, as everything should be. Hmm

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/07/2020 19:14

Just like all those pathetic students claiming to feel "unsafe" because the professor has a different opinion.
