Women's words seen as worse than men's violence, again: JK Rowling books banned by indie bookstores

www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/bookselling/article/83771-mission-driven-indies-drop-j-k-rowling-s-books.html

Multiple bookstores have said they will no longer stock JKR's books.

However, these stores still stock books by William S. Burroughs and Michael Peterson, and Louis Althusser. What do these men have in common? All three murdered their respective wives.

For a man, a murder is just one line in a biography. For a woman, having the wrong belief is a career ender.

Ah well, they only murdered biological women, we don’t really count do we....?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 07/07/2020 17:35

Are we having a purge on Authors We Disagree With? It'll be the minimal look for those bookshops, then? Shelves only admitting PreApproved Morally Pure Authors are going to be nearly empty.

What utter nonsensical hysteria.

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2020 17:37

Given the perilous state of a lot of bookshops - especially independent ones - removing a chunk of what must be your better selling books seems very dedicated to the "cause" ....

TheSingingKettle49 · 07/07/2020 17:38

Sherlock, I bet she’s gutted 🙄

TheSingingKettle49 · 07/07/2020 17:39

Sherlock? Was meant to be ‘aw shucks’

NeverMindDontFuckOffSomeMore · 07/07/2020 17:40

I assume they will be banning ALice in Wonderland as well? It would be really interesting to go through the list of celebrated male artists and see if we can find some that aren't psychos, wife beaters, wife murderers, or pedophiles.

Do you think there are any?

Apileofballyhoo · 07/07/2020 17:40

Numpties.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/07/2020 17:43

The double standard is so blatant.

Actually that's not a bad idea ... I can imagine a website with a simple "Search" box for author name, and then a space for all the "-ists" they were guilty (or accused) of.

Starting with (say) the Bible. Misogynist and homophobic for a start.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/07/2020 17:46

From the article: ‘Left Bank will not carry “books we love written by people who hate us.”’

CAN YOU IMAGINE if we removed from the shelves all the books by authors who hate women??

Pertella · 07/07/2020 17:50

Oh, they are still going to sell them if someone wants to order them. So still happy to make money from the books.

Hypocrites

Quite. I like to support indie bookshops where I can but if this is their attitude towards women who's only 'crime' is to have independent thoughts I may as well just use Amazon or Waterstones.
SerendipityJane · 07/07/2020 17:57

Left Bank

Left Behind more like.

CountFosco · 07/07/2020 18:03

Maybe we should send them copies of Fahrenheit 451?

CountFosco · 07/07/2020 18:04

Should point out though these bookshops are all in the US so don't boycott your local indies.

CountFosco · 07/07/2020 18:06

Ah, found a British one (sorry for the Penis New link): www.pinknews.co.uk/2020/02/13/mermaids-the-second-shelf-donates-jk-rowling-transphobic-maya-forstater/

AbsintheFriends · 07/07/2020 18:11

people who hate us

For people who own a bookshop their reading comprehension isn't very good, is it? JKR has bent over backwards to express her support for trans individuals in every statement she's made.

And such hilarious delusions of importance! As If JKR has the faintest idea who these people are, much less has an opinion about them.

HarryHarry · 07/07/2020 18:11

Sorry for the derail but William Burroughs didn’t kill his wife on purpose, did he? He shot her by accident while they were playing a game. Not murder.

Binglebong · 07/07/2020 18:14

Hmmm, would be interesting to send them a letter checking if they sell any bad authors wouldn't it? And why the authors are troublesome. Just to help out like.

I'm sure we could make a list here.

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/07/2020 18:14

" In response to what they regard as hate speech, three mission-driven indie bookstores have decided to stop stocking Rowling's books. ... The three indies that have pulled all of Rowling's books from their shelves, however, say that they will fill special orders for customers. ... "

Meh. Three bookshops in the US. A whole three? And they'll still sell the books, just as 'special orders' (fuck me, bookshop as speakeasy, serving you from under the counter). Two of the three are run by transmen. The third, called 'Women & Children First' is described as "a feminist bookstore". That would be libfem, then.

HarryHarry · 07/07/2020 18:14

Back on topic... As supposedly educated, liberal, tolerant people, how can they not see how banning and/or burning books looks? Are they really not aware of the other examples of this in history? Hint: It’s always the bad guys who do this!

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/07/2020 18:21

@CountFosco I haven't read the PrickNews article, but it's about The Second Shelf? They've got arsehole history. Like to fling "TERF" around.

three mission-driven indie bookstores have decided to stop stocking Rowling's books

Were they selling lots of her books before they banned them?

Do they have large children's and crime sections?

Winesalot · 07/07/2020 18:30

What do these men have in common?

You mean they have 'literally' killed women?
