Women's words seen as worse than men's violence, again: JK Rowling books banned by indie bookstores

www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/bookselling/article/83771-mission-driven-indies-drop-j-k-rowling-s-books.html

Multiple bookstores have said they will no longer stock JKR's books.

However, these stores still stock books by William S. Burroughs and Michael Peterson, and Louis Althusser. What do these men have in common? All three murdered their respective wives.

For a man, a murder is just one line in a biography. For a woman, having the wrong belief is a career ender.

FRom the article:

The three indies that have pulled all of Rowling's books from their shelves, however, say that they will fill special orders for customers.

So they'll still order them for customers and make money off Rowlings work but they just wont display the books in the shop.

Why are these people such a load of hypocritical cockwombles?

wellbehavedwomen · 07/07/2020 21:10

Somehow, I think Rowling's going to be all right.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 07/07/2020 21:15

The article says that a grand total of three bookstores have decided not to stock her books. Doubt she will be losing any sleep.

GivesNoFox · 07/07/2020 21:21

Oh I have no doubt JKR will be alright, these idiots arent even a drop in the ocean in regards to her success, the hypocrisy and lack of integrity still pisses me off though. Exactly like the Harry Potter sites that distanced themselves but are still happy to make money off the HP name.

2old4thissite · 07/07/2020 21:47

OP wish you hadn't titled this thread as you did. Gives the 3 bookshops more credence than they deserve. Certain people who may not read any further would be gleeful at this. Beware screenshots. You also used the word 'multiple. 'A couple of' bookshops would be just as accurate. Don't get people all riled up about a grand total of 3 'mission'ie agenda-driven bookshops that aren't even in this country.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 07/07/2020 22:24

Three bookshops in the US, plus that one that uses the Royal We all the time and likes to lecture UK women on how they're feministing wrong?

Ach, it's a non-story.

InionEile · 08/07/2020 03:13

A bookstore that removed all titles written by misogynists would be one empty-looking bookstore.

HeistSociety · 08/07/2020 03:21

I've no truck with so-called independent bookstores that can't tolerate feisty females.

My local dropped out of hosting Gail Fines at the last minute. Spineless conformists, they are.

I sometimes work in another. There will be holy hell if they try that on there. From me.

HeistSociety · 08/07/2020 03:21

Dines.

NewNameNewShoes · 08/07/2020 04:09

I think certain groups are likely more threatened by people like JKR because of the power she has to shine a light on certain things and influence public opinion.

A few men killing their partners is unlikely to cause a revolution. That's how I see it.

NewNameNewShoes · 08/07/2020 04:11

I guess one could say that JKR represents an ideology whereas the other cases are just examples of criminal acts perpetrated by individuals.

HeistSociety · 08/07/2020 04:13

Nah, JKR represents a whole lot of women.

NewNameNewShoes · 08/07/2020 05:39

Nah, JKR represents a whole lot of women.

Yes, women who share her ideology.

She represents a much bigger threat to TRAs than any individual violent man does to women, because she represents a whole lot of women as you point out.

The reason publishers and authorities etc have started condemning GC views is IMO simply because of peer pressure and fear of being labelled 'bigoted' which is of course the primary weapon of TRAs, who are in turn scared of people like JKR turning the public tide against their precariously balanced kingdom.

BigBadVoodooHat · 08/07/2020 06:41

I wonder if these stores will continue to stock Roald Dahl’s books?

Indy bookstores really can’t afford to be arses about this.

If they ban, we won’t shop there - simple as that. I won’t be lectured by a store as to which books I may or may but buy/read.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/07/2020 09:50

Cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

I hope they've removed all Dickens from their shelves. One of my favourite authors, but he treated his wife appallingly and wasn't a good father from the sound of it either.

Another of my favourite authors, Evelyn Waugh, would probably be unpublishable now.

peadarm · 08/07/2020 12:24

A male bookshop manager talks about "whenever J.K. decides to go on one of her ridiculous rants".

Aside from the thinly-veiled misogyny, it is clear he hasn't even bothered to read the supposed ravings.

peadarm · 08/07/2020 12:30

@HeistSociety

Dines.
Shock Was it GC-related, or because she once lived in Israel?
DancingShadows · 08/07/2020 12:44

Silly bookstores! They're the ones who will lose out. People will just go elsewhere to buy Rowling's books and probably everything else they want to read.

I'd rather buy my books from Amazon than from a random indie that cares so little about the rights and needs of women and trans women that they lump them all into one group.

OldCrone · 08/07/2020 13:29

I'd rather buy my books from Amazon

Amazon support Mermaids.

SerenityNowwwww · 08/07/2020 13:55

I’d rather download them on Scribd.
