Holy cow. I've been politically homeless for so long that this is like an oasis. I'll be watching though, just in case they do some hasty backtracking when the inevitable starts. If they hold out and don't give in to the pressure, they'd have my vote any time a candidate was standing in my area. Finally, a political party with courage.

Michelleoftheresistance · 02/07/2020 14:32

It's a good start. I'll wait to see how this is received, but it's recognising the needs on both sides and looking at meeting all needs fairly, and stated in clear language, which is very novel.

I'd like to see ideally more mention of the creation of third spaces to give trans people access to non sex based provisions, and accompanying protection of female only toilets, hcps and hospital wards, since this is where females look likely to be excluded from provision. Particularly since if the numbers of those who acquire GRCs increases, then even with gatekeeping the impact on females will be ever greater.

Meet all needs equally, provisions that fit everyone. That's all I want.

Mrskeats · 02/07/2020 14:32

Blimey I love this

Michelleoftheresistance · 02/07/2020 14:34

And yes- will be interesting to watch how a political party responds to the 'you are xphobic unless you demonstrate you're throwing that group to the wolves, depriving them of provision, excluding any who won't prioritise the x group and being wholly on one side. Which involves being loudly and rudely anti the other side even being allowed to breathe, or we shan't believe you'.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 02/07/2020 14:37

I find it incredible that this isn’t EVERY political parties policy.

FFSFFSFFS · 02/07/2020 14:39

Its just do difficult to disagree with when clearly set out!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/07/2020 14:39

Well, I wasn’t expecting that. Useful.

Even if they remain a microscopically small party it will give us something to point to as an example of how policy on this could look.

picklemewalnuts · 02/07/2020 14:46

OMD I have a political home again. I always like SDP.

Deliriumoftheendless · 02/07/2020 14:47

There is a fair few votes waiting to be scooped up if they stick with this.

Libra · 02/07/2020 14:49

I like their stuff on academic freedom as well.

@FFSFFSFFS

Its just do difficult to disagree with when clearly set out!
Except it won’t be linked to when it’s being criticised, it’ll all be rephrased and some claims will just be outright lies and lots of people won’t bother checking, they’ll just believe what someone on Twitter or pink noos has to say.
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 02/07/2020 16:32

The academic stuff is excellent too.

picklemewalnuts · 02/07/2020 16:42

I've liked them and twittered about it.

picklemewalnuts · 02/07/2020 16:42

Mind you, I am very bored!

WeeMadArthur · 02/07/2020 16:45

I came here to post a link to the SDP policy, I’m so relieved that finally someone is saying in black and white that they recognise and support the need for sex based segregation. I could actually cry with relief. Now I just have to hope we have a candidate to vote for at the next election.

scotsheather · 02/07/2020 18:14

Great stuff. Pledging to protect trans people AND women, no reasonable person can complain. Will see if they field a candidate in my area though I'm waiting for the inevitable happening to them.

SpeedofaSloth · 02/07/2020 18:32

I had no idea they were still a party.

LillianBland · 02/07/2020 18:54

Unfortunately I don’t see any mention of it on the NI branch. I’m a NI Irish nationalist that would actually vote SDP NI if they backed this policy. That’s how important this issue is to me.

DeRigueurMortis · 02/07/2020 18:57

Anyone got a link to them on Twitter please?

DeRigueurMortis · 02/07/2020 18:59

Sorry - it's ok I found them.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 02/07/2020 19:04

Fantastic. Really sensible & even handed.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 02/07/2020 19:11

Have just signed up to receive emails and may join. I did look before (cannot remember when) but was slightly off put by the three males at the helm and the Brexit policy. However, I don’t want to set too much stock by the former and the party’s reasoning for the latter I have always though was one of the good arguments for coming out of the EU (or not going in at all), even if it was not a winning argument for me. I also appreciate their commitment to the democratic process. I will read more.

Surely this is a page to snap and keep, to evidence that these views are political and therefore must be protected and cannot be used as a basis for sackings resulting from a TRA pile-on?
