Thanks for posting this OP. It's exactly what I've been looking for in a political party. In recent years I've spoiled my vote at the ballot box since there was no-one standing up for women's sex-based rights.
I'm now Following them on Twitter & spreading the word about them. The rest of their policies also appear relatively sound & while you can never expect a 100% fit I've actually applied to become a Party member.

AsTreesWalking · 02/07/2020 21:45

Blimey! I had no idea they had resurfaced. I mostly agree with them! I
Staggered.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 03/07/2020 00:46

Well, that was unexpected, I didn't even know there was a UK social democratic party.

I read through all their policies and decided that this latest incarnation of the SDP is the political home I've been looking for ever since Labour and the Green party both decided that non-men no longer need or deserve legal protections.

I e-mailed to check if the £5 fee for an adult member was a monthly or an annual fee? Got a prompt reply that a fiver covers a year of membership and decided that was an investment I was more than happy to make.

I wish all the gender critical women who've been driven out of the other left wing parties would join the SDP.

I'd love it if they got such a tsunami of new members that the media is forced to cover the story, and the other parties are forced to realise that women are half the population and we refuse to support parties that plan on dismantling our hard won rights.

WootMoggie · 03/07/2020 00:59

I've archived the page at web.archive.org in case it gets torn down and we want to feel nostalgic about when it looked like there was hope.

Arealnumber · 03/07/2020 02:10

Can anyone tweet links to this to the Labour Party? Might be useful for members to see that this is possible and that they could lose large swathes of women's votes over to the SDP party if they can't support women.

EdgeOfACoin · 03/07/2020 06:44

Very interesting - I'm not happy with any of the main parties at the moment.

Will have to look more into the SDP.

howlsmovingcastle84 · 03/07/2020 07:21

Joined! Also offered to help out with local branch (if needed). Do you think the TRAs will right this one off (might be harder to do as it is a left-leaning party) or try to do a mass infiltration of the party?

LockdownLump · 03/07/2020 07:29

Thank you OP. Sanity in a sea of madness!!!

TheRealMcKenna · 03/07/2020 07:42

I saw an interview with Rod Liddle a few months ago where he talked about the party and how it was trying to grow.

He said that at one of their meetings someone asked a question “Can a woman have a penis?” The answer given was “No.”

MrGHardy · 03/07/2020 08:10

"It's the sensible middle ground I've been looking for."

Isn't it? These days it is ever harder to be in the middle as the world becomes increasingly polarized.

Jellyeggs · 03/07/2020 10:36

They would have my vote! Such a shame the Irish SDP has gone full delusion :(

PetraDelphiki · 03/07/2020 13:41

Not comfortable with proportional representation and removal of House of Lords - I think it’s really important to have 2 chambers (although could happily go for keeping constituency MPs and having a pr based HoL)

picklemewalnuts · 06/07/2020 13:05

We're joining too. I'm persuading DSs as well.

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/07/2020 13:57

I wouldn't be too quick to hitch your star to SDP's wagon! I witnessed this little exchange on Twitter yesterday involving Paula Watson, the Party Chairwoman.

In answer to a tweet saying "except women aren't equal in society and stating it doesn't make it so. It is why we need policies specifically for women...such as childcare, DV, abortion, equal pay etc"

Watson responded with "I'm sorry I don't agree and we already have legislation in all of those areas. I'm not wasting my time fighting for something I already have."

This jarred with me a bit as in the last week or so it was reported that gender bias is more likely to be perpetuated by those who think it is not happening (advances.sciencemag.org/content/6/26/eaba7814) - which seems to me to be the viewpoint of SDP's Party Chairwoman.

Last bit of the exchange:

Watson's stance inspires no confidence in me that the SDP would be worth a damn. They might write things that sound good, but she makes me doubt they would implement them. Sad

Sorry, that first image is a bit obscured - my bad! IIRC, the hidden tweets were about 89% of ?leadership? were male, but can't really remember - it wasn't what bothered me by this exchange.

I see your point, however she points out that women are well represented at the moment- I think I'd let them get started before expecting them to turn away those offering to stand because they aren't female/BAME.

I would expect to be able to see diversity when they start publishing their candidates, and when I can see the make up of my local branch.

Certainly being discussed on here will increase the number of female candidates and members.

transdimensional · 06/07/2020 19:14

That's correct - at sdp.org.uk/people/ you can see a list of 9 leading people, only one of whom is female. Additionally on their blog at sdp.org.uk/sdptalk/ there are 9 contributors listed (not the same nine), only one of whom is female (not the same one). OTOH it's a pretty small party and in the tweets you showed us, the party chairwoman pointed out that their southeast regional committee is two-thirds female. So, if more women join then hopefully representation will improve. Obviously the party chairwoman has stated an opposition to any kind of quotas (but some here will agree) - her tweet where she stated that monitoring the ethnic profile of the party to check for discrimination would be akin to herding people into groups as they did in Nazi Germany was just stupid, but people do tend to say stupid things sometimes on twitter. She was also rather too dismissive of the possible need for legislative changes on childcare and abortion etc.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 08/07/2020 19:18

Well, having seen how useless the Women's Equality Party were when it came to the crunch I'm more than willing to wait and see. Hopefully their policies will attract more women, and some of them will be willing to take on leading rolls. Early days.

EileenAlanna · 08/07/2020 19:42

Totally agree @Stealhsquirrelnutkin the WEP is a joke. These are their proposed changes to the GRA being consulted on prior to their next Conference.
No political party is ever going to be a 100% fit unless there are tens of millions of them all having a membership of 1. Any party's policies can be strengthened, expanded, amended or changed in any other way through the voted will of the members at conference.
This is an extremely small Party - I believe something in the region of 1650/1700 actual members - but it comes with quite a long history. I joined because of the policy on women which is unique among current political parties but absolutely believe I can have a strong voice on its other policies where I'm in less agreement & very much be in a position to effect changes.

FreddoFrogAddict · 08/07/2020 20:00

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them as a potential political home. I'm politically homeless but would happily be a single issue voter for a common sense party that puts sex above gender.
