Twitter - JKR 'likes' disappearing

Apileofballyhoo · 02/07/2020 11:01

Just a heads up, if you're on Twitter sporadically or just to give a like to JKR or people who have supported her, go back and check if any of your likes have disappeared and like them again. Mine disappear regularly, including Ickabog tweets I liked that just so happen to be of the same date that JKR tweeted about something else.

I'm not going to speculate about how or why these likes are disappearing. I don't think I'm the only person it's happening to.

I get a perverse pleasure from finding people who’ve blocked me and blocking them right back. Pointless, perhaps, but satisfying.

buckeejit · 02/07/2020 19:48

Thanks for this, how annoying & sinister. Will go check. She has been amazing with all the ickabog drawings.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/07/2020 19:55

My Maya one disappears too, colouring. I follow and like tweets from other accounts that are nothing to do with GC, it really just seem to be my JKR likes. Fuckers.

Somethings definitely up with Twitter. I’ve never liked or RT any GC content, but I follow a lot of GC people (and trans people - I like to have a broad horizon to monitor). I recently posted a cute picture of my dog and it was marked to my followers as “potentially containing sensitive content”.

SerenityNowwwww · 02/07/2020 20:23

I think Scott Newgent said there was some dodgy goings on with their account too.

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/07/2020 21:18

Dryheave for some reason that made me laugh. Is your dog so cute that it would make all other dogs jealous ?

JGACC · 02/07/2020 22:35

My JK Rowling likes have disappeared before too. Seem to be staying put for now.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/07/2020 22:36

Some of the things I've seen on Twitter means they should probably do that for all pictures of dogs now... I've seen the sensitive content warning on a lot of gender critical shifts accounts, and when I open it I'm a bit wtf. Pictures of JKR appearing in a newspaper article will do it.

All my likes disappeared again. I think there's something linked to the Maya Forester one and all JKR tweets from Jun 6th as my likes disappear from the Ickabog drawings and a Harry Potter canon question she answered.

I can't remember what I have liked and what I haven't. However, I'm nipping on every day to like some stuff. I've also shared supportive Baroness Nicholson things, and other more generally feminist stuff.

Campervan69 · 04/07/2020 11:03

All my likes have been disappearing for months and my retweets even of the replies to JK Rowling's tweet from people I follow.

Censorship in action again which was why I got involved in all this campaigning in the first place. Reminds me of is it the Running man the Arnold Schwarzenegger film where they completely edit what happens to make it look as though he's a bad person when he's a good person?

SerenityNowwwww · 04/07/2020 11:15

Me to - my likes and shares if the tweet and the tweets saying ‘oi where’s my like??’ also disappear.

Apileofballyhoo · 04/07/2020 11:35

My likes on people saying "where are my likes?" also disappear, serenity.

DeRigueurMortis · 05/07/2020 23:13

My likes on JKR's recent thread have been zapped.

I've reinstated them....

Let's see how long they last.

TehBewilderness · 06/07/2020 03:06

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Interestingly Fred Sargeant has tweeted that he’s been noticing his follower numbers going down again shortly after any increase. He wasn’t going to speculate (because it could have been genuine) until followers contacted him to say they seem to have ‘unfollowed’ him even though they themselves categorically did not choose to unfollow.
That has been a problem on Facebook and twitter for a long time. I think they may have intern type problems.
JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 06/07/2020 06:25

I'm not saying you're wrong, but is it possible that Twitters algorithm automatically deletes likes and followers from accounts that don't tweet or retweet anything? It does look a bit suspicious if you're only liking JKR stuff and not doing anything else.
I'm quite active on Twitter, tweeting, replying and retweeting and it happens to me. I've reliked a couple of times a day before.
My guess would be that it's not do to with your account but probably JK Rowlings. Her likes on that post are usually a fairly neat 208.2, with very minor variation. I think that would fluctuate a bit more if it were individuals likes being meddled with rather than her post.
The fact that #IStandWithJKRowling isn't there but #IStandWithJKRowlings is is interesting. Twitter is open about the fact that certain words are banned from trending, usually porn related. This was why when all the Dominic Cummings drama happened, misspellings of the hashtags trended because 'cumming' is blocked from trending. If misspellings are happening for JKR and not the actually popular hashtag, that does imply she's on a naughty list.

happydappy2 · 06/07/2020 07:53

Twitter is a lawless cesspit. Look at how they banned Megan Murphy for breaking a rule that wasn’t in place when she tweeted, misgendering Jessica Yaniv who also has documents with a male name on. The terf blocker list.....who knows what else is going on

RadandMad · 06/07/2020 08:22

Been happening to me too. Every time I see JKR's main tweets, my likes have gone.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 06/07/2020 08:42

Mine goes multiple times a day - every time I see someone else re-tweet it I check.

I re-re-tweet it when this happens Wink. I'm also having to repeatedly re-follow certain GC accounts. It's all a bit sinister.

nettie434 · 06/07/2020 08:43

There have always been odd problems with Twitter unliking tweets or unfollowing people but not to the extent reported here. If you just use twitter to support GC people tweets, then it won't do any harm to add the odd inane non controversial tweet about the weather, sport, TV etc. It will make it harder for Twitter algorithms to pick you up.

YonBonnieBanks · 06/07/2020 10:27

I cannot like anything because of my job title. I have to be seen to be pro equality, and I am.

I am largely fine with changing gender but you cannot say you are no longer a woman if you are still getting periods (menopause and other health conditions excluded that's not to do with changing gender).

I also struggle with non binary as it doesn't make sense to me. You have a willy / fanny so you can't be both. Pick one and change. I think non binary is more dangerous than trans. The pronouns are also a PITA

But due to my job and the organisation being very woke, I keep quiet but this wokeness is one of the reasons I'm looking for another job.

Apileofballyhoo · 06/07/2020 11:44

I haven't checked the most recent tweets so I must do that now. I've also found I've been blocked from some accounts despite my lack of tweets. Twitter never asked me if I was a robot before liking JKR tweets.

OP posts:
Apileofballyhoo · 06/07/2020 13:05

My likes on JKR tweets from June 28th had disappeared this time too. They had been holding fine until today. Something new has been created to deal with that obviously. My likes on her most recent tweets are holding fine but I'm sure that will change in another while so I've bookmarked them to make checking easier.

I find it hard to believe that the original number of likes for any of her posts doesn't go up as more people become aware.

OP posts:
peadarm · 06/07/2020 13:45

Glinner has alleged, on another thread, that "Twitter has a high percentage of trans-identified employees and for some time has been silencing feminists and their allies".

It would be easy enough for a coder on the inside to write a routine to reduce specific likes.

I don't know much about twitter, but if that were happening (and evidence of it could be collated), I would assume it might contravene some kind of declared policy?

nettie434 · 06/07/2020 14:08

What I found suspicious was that when JKR first did her women tweet, Twitter kept the JKR controversy story but not the actual tweet on my trending timeline for ages. I really felt they were trying to make as many people as possible outraged. Other trending topics come and go in a matter of hours. I am not a conspiracy theorist normally but I did find it very strange.

picklemewalnuts · 06/07/2020 16:15

How can this be publicised/challenged?
