Yet another woman - a writer - sacked after TRA campaign.

WildishBambino · 01/07/2020 16:12

Having seen Hachette and the Blair Partnership stand up for JKR, I had some hope for the publishing industry.

There's a series of children's books called The Warrior Cats. Proper children's books, aimed at the 8-12 age range, and not part of YA fiction. Published by Harper Collins, but put together by Working Partners.

The books are written by 'Erin Hunter' which is collective pseudonym for a bunch of female writers. One of which was a Scottish writer Gillian Philip.

When JKR was attacked, Philip changed her twitter handle to include a message of support. This attracted the ire of the TRAs and also it appears the Furries (because of the anthropomorphic cats I assume). She received a huge amount of sexualised abuse via Twitter, which she just retweeted and said 'Bring it on homophobes and lesbian-haters'.

Her twitter feed is now gone, but you can view a cache <a class="break-all" href="https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Qisq_6YhRvwJ:twitter.com/Gillian_Philip+&cd=8&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-b-d" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

As she wouldn't recant, the TRAs facilitated a mass spamming of complaints to her employer Working Partners.

Within 24 hours James Noble is the managing editor at Working Partners personally emailed complainants to say she was sacked.

This really doesn't seem to have been picked up by the media, presumably because it involves a children's author far less well-known than JKR. But it shows what happens to women who step out of line when they aren't too big to cancel.

Blimey!

I find myself agreeing with Piers Morgan, and now the DM . . . we really are a long way down the rabbit hole.

Sushiroller · 05/07/2020 09:38

Fucking disgraceful.
It BLOWS my mind this is happening. Here. Now. To me.
It's nothing short of terrorism.

Lamahaha · 05/07/2020 09:39

It's getting out of hand. I wonder if she could sue them? I'd help with the gardening.

I haven;t read the whole thread -- missed it somehow, so maybe this has already been mentioned. Will read back now

OMG that article is actually great. Everyone just hung her out to dry because of anonymous twitter trolls and it's just shocking. They are saying that it's because she associated Erin Hunter with her own views? That sounds like trying to find a justification for what they've done now that they've been called to account. I hope Gillian sues them.

I know that the problem is way beyond twitter, but I'm starting to wonder if women can sue twitter as a class action? Would that be a thing that could potentially happen?

Lamahaha · 05/07/2020 10:14

@AbsintheFriends

On the subject of GC writers, another shout out for the amazing Jane Harris, historical author of The Observations, Gillespie and I, and Sugar Money, who is on twitter as *@blablafishcakes* and is utterly fearless and fabulous.
Absolutely. It was Jane Harris who did all the detective work and found out who was behind the sacking of Baroness Nicholson and first outed Damian Barr. She tweeted her findings, and Janice Turner picked up the story for the Times. Jane is the only author beside JK who is utterly fearless, though she doesn't have a fraction of the clout of JK. Right now she is drumming up support for the Baroness. I love her to bits. Most authors can't do this, as evidenced by this thread. I just want to get off this crazy world. I am so sad for women and our young children. I want to stand up and fight, but I'm scared.

We all know women don't have penises, so how can others be so blindsided. If we stand up and say that, we are cancelled.

I don't care what others do, what they wear, just leave women alone, stay out of our spaces. Leave our rights alone.

I am disillusioned with everything.

StopTheWorldImGettingOffNow · 05/07/2020 11:05

@newwayofthinking

That's exactly how I feel, word for word (see my username!) I spend far too much time and energy worrying about this issue and feeling totally unable to do anything about it. I don't really care for myself, I'm a grown woman, privileged and protected in many ways. I can ignore the craziness and get on with my life. It's the vulnerable, the weak, the young and the unlucky that I'm terrified for.

I have two young children and rather than feel hopeful and excited for their futures and the world we are making for them, I feel desperately sad and scared at how regressive and oppressive things are becoming (dressed up as 'inclusivity').

DH wants me to step back and ignore it all for a while, he can see the stress and upset it is causing me, but I can't. If your paper bin is on fire you don't just shrug your shoulders, turn around and let your house burn down with your children in it.

Newwayofthinking · 05/07/2020 11:22

@StopTheWorldImGettingOffNow

I am new to all this, probably 8months or so in. I'm not sure Its a fight we can win, but we have to try.

I just don't understand why people just accept the illogical over fact.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/07/2020 13:16

Lamahaha

I've signed that list - hopefully it will make them realise the strength of feeling.

queenofknives · 05/07/2020 16:19

We will win. There is an objective reality behind this that isn't going to go away. People are starting to see it more now that TRA tactics have crept into other areas of life and this gaslighting and abuse is becoming the norm in ALL kinds of issues, not just trans. Even with the trans stuff, I think people are starting to see there is something sinister going on. Keep on digging into it and doing what you can - but also no one woman is going to fix this by herself, not even Our Beloved Lady JK!! So give yourself a break from time to time and remember you still have the right to enjoy your life Flowers

ThatDonna · 06/07/2020 17:02

You said, "Her twitter feed is now gone, but you can view a cache here", but that link gave me a 404 message from Google. Might someone have the original Twitter address so we can see if it's on the Internet Archive? I know it's a slim chance that they would capture something that was taken down so quickly, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Also, did anyone take a screenshot of the Twitter exchanges she was having with people? I saw someone posted some Tweets where she insulted people questioning her support of JK Rowling, but they were taken out of context from the conversation in which they occured, which is suspicious. Hmm Were they continuing to ask questions she had already answered? This is one tactic groups use to harrass someone. How was the question stated? What other things had people said in that thread?

Manderleyagain · 11/07/2020 11:12

I saw an anime furry account on twitter claiming that gillian was sacked for bullying children and publicly posting their email addresses.

Lies fly around of their own accord once set going, by people who want it to be true. Has gillian written any detail about what heppened other than the coverage in the dm?

Binglebong · 11/07/2020 14:16

In case anyone is wavering about buying Bad Faith I wanted to let you know it is an excellent book. And a very good one for teens to read as well as adults.

NearlyGranny · 11/07/2020 14:16

The repetitive questioning is an irritation. We do get it on here sometimes when people DRTFT, and it gets some sharp answers.

Politicians always say, "I refer the speaker to my previous answer," which seems the perfect response!

ThatDonna · 13/07/2020 10:02

@NearlyGranny

Sorry to not be on top of all the lingo, but what do you mean by DRTFT? Didn't read it the first time??

I know from other sources that one of the harassment techniques employed on the internet is to ask questions that have already been answered repeatedly, so I'm not sure it's always just a matter of laziness that people ask such questions.

I would just like to know the full Twitter exchange so I can speak about it knowledgeably. That's why I asked if anyone else took screenshots of the Twitter conversation with the supposed 15-year-old to which she responded.

WildishBambino · 13/07/2020 10:17

I'm the original poster and the cache I linked to does appear to have disappeared.

What Gillian Philip did was retweet all the sexually abusive messages she received. She didn't converse with the abusers, just showed the abuse for all to see.

Followed by lots of TRAs going 'Oh my God, you publicised my threats to rape and kill you! You've doxxed me and I'm only a little child! So unfair!'. Hmm

Wow. They tipped their hand! Yes, this is def a misogynistic movement led by hetero men & predators who want access to women's & girl's spaces & bodies. Their supporters are the true believers who think they are protecting a vulnerable minority.

Since I don't watch the news & try to stay away from social media for my own mental health, I had no idea all this was going on until recently. I honestly feel like I've woken up in some bizarre cross between 1984, Animal Farm & The Twilight Zone.

There are actual transexuals who are speaking out against all this "gender" ideology. Miranda Yardley is a trans person who says this ideology is misogynistic & homophobic to the core. These are transwomen, who had actual gender dysphoria & transitioned, who still use "he" & say they will not deny biological reality or mock women & call what is happening with transitioning children child abuse. But these people are not interviewed in the media or consulted by corporations or schools or given any platform & they are also attacked by the TRA mob.

The meteoric rise in the number of teenage girls being directed toward transitioning, esp. in contrast to boys transitioning, is another sign of the misogyny in this cult. Gender non-conforming boys, instead of being accepted as a boy who likes pink or would rather play house than catch, are told they are really a girl & need to mutilate their bodies to be happy & accepted in society. This has been happening long enough that we've had a sizable number of vocal female DETRANSITIONERS & desistors. Most often these girls were lesbians who were manipulated into transitioning by peers, social media (esp. Tumblr & YouTube), clinicians evaluating them, & parents who preferred their child transition than be attracted to the same sex. Often these girls have taken hormones that have permanently affected their bodies, and some have had mastectomies. It's really horrible.

All this has led to some unexpected alliances. The Heritage Foundation hosted a panel on "The Equality Act: Concerns from the Left" w/ 4 women from the radical feminist organization Women's Liberation Front. The 2 organizations also partnered w/ some other orgs to develop a booklet for parents on how to protect their kids (esp. daughters) from being influenced by people trying to convince them they must really be a boy inside just b/c of how they like to dress or b/c they like "boy's" activities.

There is also an LGB Alliance in the UK that is working toward removing LGB support and affiliation from organizations like Stonewall that have been taken over by the trans ideology cult, to the point where they are actually advocating for violating the rights, health, well-being, & bodies of lesbians! These organizations have to be doing it for the big money that is funding this cult, which is disgusting. I'd rather see them close their doors forever than continue to promote this indoctrination & policies that are harming women, LGB people, children (esp. autistic children), intersex people (whose medical conditions are also being USED by TRAs as evidence of biological transgenderism) and actual transexuals! I expressed my relief at discovering the LGB Alliance on Twitter & they contacted me by DM saying that a number of LGB people in the U.S. have contacted them about starting something here, & said to email them if I wanted to be a part of that.

I will be so relieved if I can actually get plugged in w/ LGB people here in the States. I know most people aren't paying attention. I've talked to 2 friends locally (one lesbian & one hetero woman) & both were shocked & wanted to know more. I've created a playlist called "Trans ideology vs. women & children" on YT, and I've found that the best way to talk to them is to watch the videos together via Skype, Zoom, or Google Hangouts, so I can pause it and make commentary. Anyway, I just hope there is someone here in Columbus, OH, who would like to talk strategy for addressing these issues & maybe meet in person. One person will just get berated, or worse, but if we can raise awareness & build support offline, we might get some clout. I'm not at all hesitant to lobby at the Statehouse, or at the local offices of my U.S. Senators & Rep., or City Council member's offices. I just can't do it all alone.

Sorry so long, but I thought you guys could use some signs of hope. People ARE starting to fight this monster. We just need to keep working to educate people about how this "trans" (whatever that means now) "rights" (which apparently means the "right" to do anything they please & never be questioned, no matter how much it violates the rights, safety, & well-being of women & children) religion is not about civil rights or equal protection under the law. It's about "trans" "rights" OVER ALL ELSE. It's about controlling speech, violating women's spaces & bodies, protecting "trans" people's feelings at all cost, & manipulating the public under the guise of "rights" & not wanting to be a "bigot". You'd really have to be drinking the kool-aid to know what I know & still support this.

This board hates me. When I click on the image, it enlarges, but the text is so blurry, I can't read any of the comments. IDK what to do about it.

BTW, there's a site called terfisaslur.com where you can send screenshots of abusive tweets on social media. I suggest you check it out to see more evidence of how vile these people are, and save the bookmark & email address so you can send in screenshots you take of people being abusive & threatening to "terfs" whenever you come across it.

Gillian Philip has written an article in the Mail, telling what happened.

It wasn't very prominent on The Mail's website sadly, but it was published yesterday. I don't know whether it went into the print edition. I can't see it's been mentioned on here yet.

Her story is also in The Times today.
