Yet another woman - a writer - sacked after TRA campaign.

Having seen Hachette and the Blair Partnership stand up for JKR, I had some hope for the publishing industry.

There's a series of children's books called The Warrior Cats. Proper children's books, aimed at the 8-12 age range, and not part of YA fiction. Published by Harper Collins, but put together by Working Partners.

The books are written by 'Erin Hunter' which is collective pseudonym for a bunch of female writers. One of which was a Scottish writer Gillian Philip.

When JKR was attacked, Philip changed her twitter handle to include a message of support. This attracted the ire of the TRAs and also it appears the Furries (because of the anthropomorphic cats I assume). She received a huge amount of sexualised abuse via Twitter, which she just retweeted and said 'Bring it on homophobes and lesbian-haters'.

Her twitter feed is now gone, but you can view a cache <a class="break-all" href="https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Qisq_6YhRvwJ:twitter.com/Gillian_Philip+&cd=8&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-b-d" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

As she wouldn't recant, the TRAs facilitated a mass spamming of complaints to her employer Working Partners.

Within 24 hours James Noble is the managing editor at Working Partners personally emailed complainants to say she was sacked.

This really doesn't seem to have been picked up by the media, presumably because it involves a children's author far less well-known than JKR. But it shows what happens to women who step out of line when they aren't too big to cancel.

Bad Faith is Number 10 in Children's Mysteries and Detectives ebooks now!

Binglebong · 02/07/2020 19:19

@AbsintheFriends

Thanks bogoblin

Where do you see its ranking?

It's in 'product details' Binglebong - more difficult to find on a mobile device than on a laptop. Amazon sales ranking. I can see this one has actually slipped down a bit, but of course it's Thursday, which is release day in publishing so there will be a lot of competition today. Waiting until tomorrow to download on kindle might be a better idea.

Thank you. I'm on a mobile so that might explain my not seeing it.

Sorry, I'm only just catching up with this thread! Really appalled that Gillian Philip has had her contract terminated because of complaints from Twitter.
I will buy her eBook. Glad to know that the Free Speech Union is helping her out.

Binglebong · 02/07/2020 19:26

That's odd, I've just looked on the chart and can't find it at all on there.

AbsintheFriends · 02/07/2020 19:50

Binglebong apologies, I checked on my phone and chart positions don't seem to be included anywhere on the product description on there, which is annoying. Sorry if you wasted lots of time looking.

If you were looking on the main kindle paid chart, you'd have to scroll through a lot of pages to find it as it's still at 4000 and something, but it's in the smaller individual categories, where authors who aren't massive bestsellers are better represented. The category this one is doing best in is Children's Mystery and Detective. If it gets to no 1 it'll get a bestseller banner, and she can legitimately call herself a bestselling author. (I'm sure she's already had lots of number 1s and can do this anyway, but it's always great to see your book with that little orange marker by it!)

LoungeLizardLhama · 02/07/2020 19:52

@ScreamingBeans

I've joined the Free Speech Union.

It's cheaper than my Unison sub and I suspect will be of infinitely more use to me for any problems I might have at work. Fingers crossed I don't have any, but if I do, it will be because I tweet and post openly about my opposition to trans ideology and in favour of reality and women's rights.

You’re right that Free Speech Union will be more useful to you @ScreamingBeans. Unison believe trans women are women and give free Mermaids training to their members in schools. Despite the fact that the majority of the membership is made up of working class women. Angry

I have just bought it from Amazon and Waterstones are taking orders for it as well. It would be good if we could get it to number 1 and in great demand.

I wonder if it’s worth leaving unison and letting them know why?

Utterly useless to me when we had medical issues that needed employer accommodations a few years ago anyway.

MajesticWhine · 02/07/2020 21:18

Just bought the kindle version. Feels good to be able to do something.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/07/2020 21:29

@TobyYoung, are you the real Toby Young?

That's what I was wondering Ubiquity

Pregnamechange · 02/07/2020 21:37

To the PP who emailed which email address did you send it to?

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/07/2020 21:44

Yes, he's the real TY.

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/07/2020 22:13

I can't seem to find it on kindle.

if I put her name in I get some of her book but not bad faith.

if I put her name and bad faith in, I get one book that is completely not related by name or author.

is it just my kindle app being stupid?

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/07/2020 22:24

Thank you Bingle

Binglebong · 02/07/2020 22:45

Can anyone see its rating on murder and detective stories for children. I'm sure that's one a PP mentioned buy I can't see it on there at all.

AbsintheFriends · 02/07/2020 22:52

It's at number 9

Good news! But why do I see this? It seems as if the ranks are not being kept up to date for people looking...

bishopgiggles · 02/07/2020 23:06

The OP is an appalling story. How can this happen because a few bored twitter users decreed it?

Sorry but I won't be going near anything to do with Toby Young - I simply do not trust him (based on his history, nothing sinister), but I'm glad of anything that might put this story in the spotlight.

ScreamingBeans · 02/07/2020 23:11

Oh fuck why am I giving them my hard-earned money. Fuckers.
