Why r/GenderCritical was banned by Reddit

Hi! TRA here! Thought I'd take a quick breather from all the crowing, high-fiving, etc. to throw a lifeline to any actual open-minded critical thinkers wondering why Reddit banned r/gendercritical. Basically, you have 2 options when it comes to what to believe:

 1. It's a true conspiracy: silicon valley, hollywood & the media are in the thrall of the well-funded TransAgenda, the need for woke points, child-groomers, women-haters, MRAs, etc. etc.
 1. r/GenderCritical was hateful - if you want evidence then go to r/GenderCynical which existed to harvest said hatefulness. Read their strictly enforced rules about hate speech, misogyny, anti-feminism, pile-ons, doxxing, etc. (NB: abbreviating "trans exclusionary radical feminist" is not considered hate speech on this subreddit) and then sort their posts by "top" and "all time" and judge for yourself.

The trans men, trans women and non-binary people of Reddit do not hate women and do not tolerate abuse. Have a better day. x

And here, on FWR, if there's a choice to be made between TW and women who've nowhere else to go, it doesn't matter whether I'm fine with the former if the latter aren't. Here, if nowhere else, we surely have to prioritise women.

Indeed. This is not the place for women for fawn over transwomen, even if they are decent human beings.

Would Debbie Hayton's wife feel comfortable talking openly and honestly on this board?

No, because DH is apparently 'true-trans' posts here. DH apparently deserves special treatment because DH writes 'supporting women' articles in the Times (whilst hypocritically using women's toilets, without a GRC, but that is a complete other conversation).

There aren't many other places where women can go.

midclegs · 03/07/2020 17:58

Ignore my atrocious grammar!

TehBewilderness · 03/07/2020 17:59

@MessyBess

The left handed thing? They used to punish lefties in school by hitting their knuckles or even tying up their hands. It is the origin of the word of the word 'sinister' and I still think it apt.

Lol, what the fuck?

The teacher tied my left had to the desk so I would learn to write with my right. The reason it is a bizarre analogy is that were punished for deviance just as Lesbians and Gays were. Transgenderism is all about conformity to sex role stereotypes.

One of the deadly classics of female conditioning is teaching little girls that "he hits, pushes, hurts, you because he likes you." That is such an evil thing to teach a child.

DandyMandy · 03/07/2020 18:02

Does anyone know why the rape subreddits are still up? Clearly they incite hatred but Reddit feels the need to allow them to stay up because they just don't care.

TehBewilderness · 03/07/2020 18:04

I want input from sensible trans women! I want discussion and dialogue, not polemic!
I am not willing to exclude women in order to include males who identify as women.
I take the advice of Maya Angelou. When they show me who they are I believe them.

Sorry, but that's a big step away from what I originally said. I said that a trans-person living in the closet (ie me trying to live as a man) was like a leftie using their right hand. Coming out of the closet was like switching back.

FYI the term 'transgenderism' is considered a little sly when applied to lived experiences. It implies being trans is a choice or a construct. Consider 'homosexual' and 'homosexualism'

So far ism when applied to ideology is acceptable for this forum and the English language in general.
Perhaps calling people transphobic who use words that end in ism like Feminism can be your next MRA project.

I have a chip on my shoulder about being dehumanised, but I didn't call it 'transphobic'. Your comment "transgenderism is all about conforming to sex stereotypes" blurred the distinction between people and ideology.

Here is my original comment. Please explain how your comment was applicable:
The only thing I can compare (coming out) to is being a left-handed person being forced to use their right hand for years and then switching back to their left which I think is quite apt considering the historical/social perceptions of 'sinister' left-handedness.

No, thank you.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 03/07/2020 22:04

Ive just asked the resident english teacher why its transphobic or homophobic as opposed to an ism...like racism

Does anyone know why?

Its fuckall to do with the thread but I’m curious

The english teacher just said it should be ism....

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 03/07/2020 22:06

We’ve accepted a term that doesn't make sense because the society has judged the term that does make sense...as unacceptable

Apparently...those arent my words

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 03/07/2020 22:09

Apparently...those arent my words

I should really have pretended that they were my words until Someone told me off for using the wrong words

No, but I've just been down an etymological rabbit hole. I'd always assumed 'homophobia' was 'same-fear' (Greek homo/hetero, same/different ) but apparently it's original meaning was derived from the Latin meaning of 'homo' - man - ie homophobia was fear of men, logically paired with gynephobia.
Pretty good video which sums up the hypocrisy and misogyny around the Reddit ban
That was a very interesting, if nauseating watch. Despite the laudable "Remember the Human" soundbite, Reddit obviously has serious issues balancing free speech against highly offensive content. I hope videos like this at least force Reddit HQ to comment on the accusations of misogyny and hypocrisy.

But these accusations would stand whether r/GC was banned or not. I still believe r/GC was banned on merit.
As much as r/GC might have liked to differ (what hate? What minority? What oppression?), they openly targeted a minority group in a hateful and dehumanising way and so were regarded in the same category as racist or alt-right groups.

One nit I will pick with video was conflating "terf" with "feminist" (5mins50)

Yes!

Thats what resident english teacher said...i just said thats it would make more sense if used as a women afraid of men thing

Although in 1964 someone whose name escapes me coined the homophobia thing as something that peoplE were afraid of becoming..lie homosexual

(My ipad puts random capitals in...stupid Fucking thing. I reckon skynet may actually kill us)

HeistSociety · 03/07/2020 23:29

I've read Gender Critical for years - though I never posted. It was not a hate site, and it was strictly moderated to conform with Reddit's rules.

It was a place the kids could kick out males, of any gender. It was a place for lesbians to talk freely, for detransitioners to share their stories, for US and international movements to decentre women in public life to be discussed...

I believe much of the GC material was archived, and will become available again at some point. That's when the claims of 'hate speech' will be assessed as what they are - a lie.

Males of any gender lose my trust from the get go when they arrive in feminist space looking to centre their own stories, opinions and needs.

HeistSociety · 03/07/2020 23:30

Mods not kids - autocorrect fail.

TehBewilderness · 04/07/2020 00:02

Women talking about their interactions with abusive white males being framed as women targeting a minority group in a hateful and dehumanizing way is classic DARVO.

I think it was the dramatic increase in detransitioners and transsexuals who came to the GC reddit to share their experiences that prompted the banning.

HeistSociety · 04/07/2020 00:12

I think it was male rage at not being able to control female speech.

MadBadDaddy · 04/07/2020 00:41

TehBewilderness
Not only shooting the messenger, but calling them an abuser, is DARVO

I felt attacked by r/GC, although I never complained directly, and I flatter myself I've got a pretty thick skin. Others felt attacked also, and did complain, loudly and often.

I don't think Reddit will be transphobia-free as a result of r/GC going, as a scroll through r/againsthatesubreddits will show, but that sub was an icon and a focus for intolerance that took obvious delight in putting the boot in wherever it could.

OP posts:
HeistSociety · 04/07/2020 01:03

Feeling attacked is subjective.

GC Reddit played by Reddit's rules. If doing that hurt your feelings, OP, you needed to take it up with Reddit and request a rule change.

That you would default to shutting down women's rule abiding voices is telling.

In fact, GC did NOT attack any person, trans or not, but held and expressed beliefs that hurt your feelings.

It hurts my feelings that males of whatever gender celebrate the censoring of female speech, but I'm not shutting the OP down.

HeistSociety · 04/07/2020 01:07

That sub was a place for women to speak freely, away from males.

Other than spreading untruths about women, I'm not sure what the OPs point with regard to feminism is? You can feminist so long as males of alternative gender expression approve of what you say? Seems straight out of Misogyny 101 to me.

7Days · 04/07/2020 01:31

Look OP, women reserve the right to say, This is Us, These are our Problems.

Sorry if you feel attacked - genuine.
But you feeling attacked and us shutting up out of kindness wont solve our problems.

As for r/gc, proper modding would have solved any transphobia on there. Look at this board for example, we can discuss womens rights properly because any bigotry is stamped on immediately. R/gc should have been given te chance to set their house in order so the worthwhile discussions could continue. Luckily enough the whole sub has been backed up to anyone who wants to see the ratio of transphobia to discussion can easily do so.

The facts remain.

Biology exists.
Sometimes it matters.
We need to be free to discuss it.

HeistSociety · 04/07/2020 01:36

GC WAS properly modded.
