On his Twitter. Wut?

Jolyon Maugham 'proud to be working with Mumsnet'
OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 25/06/2020 10:36

Wait - didnt he criticize a barrister recently for the type of organisations they worked for, and suggest that Wrong Think is in some way infectious?

NorthernIrishFeminist · 25/06/2020 10:37

He's a creep but crack on he might learn something

MrsWednesdayteatime · 25/06/2020 11:08

Is this how you get bad news stories sunk in Google searches?

Jolyon+Mumsnet would bring up Boxing Day Foxgate and plenty of misogyny

If you partner with Mumsnet and gets lots of positive internet noise does that sink the bad stuff and raise the good search results on a Google search? I'm not sure how it works but remember reading about a company that specialised in cleaning up people's internet profile and part of their method was driving down the bad stories with new good stories.

If he has no ulterior motives then "hats off" to him

OvaHere · 25/06/2020 11:09

Ooh cynical MrsWednesday

I like it. Grin

Dyrne · 25/06/2020 11:30

I don’t think anyone here is trying to “cancel” him; more just boggling at why he suddenly has the highest praise for a website he has previously deemed the ultimate evil...

R0wantrees · 25/06/2020 11:32

@wellbehavedwomen

In fairness, that's a really good cause. He may be utterly clueless on what is happening to women's rights re. erosion of the legal status of 'woman', but it's still good he's doing this.
I doubt Jo Maugham has considered the single mothers who are transwidows.

A number of women share their experiences here:

Quite. The hypocrisy and compartmentalising are amazing.

But whatever.

BacklashStarts · 25/06/2020 11:45

Read the title 4 times, clicked on thread, still confused, read title again. Ah! I read ‘ Jolyon Maugham 'proud to be a working mum

I thought he’d transitioned!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/06/2020 11:51

This is a much-needed campaign.

I'm sure that neither JM nor the vipers# see this as anything more than an essential coalition of those who recognise that rhetoric and intentions are not enough and Something Must Be Done.

#I will know that I am wrong when Good Law and MumsnetHQ launch a joint merchandising line with viper-patterned kimonos. But no baseball bats, no matter how naicely carved or engraved.

AskDan · 25/06/2020 11:59

I think cancel culture is awful..so I say crack on Jolyon.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2020 12:01

I don’t think we should get him cancelled for this. He is awful but this is a good cause and will be useful.

I agree. It's not us who are most likely to cancel him.

Siablue · 25/06/2020 12:08

If his so called friends cancel him it will be a lesson learned in life.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2020 12:09

The day is early though and he might be retracting and grovelling by teatime.

I'd be tempted to put money on it, tbh.

RiotAndAlarum · 25/06/2020 12:13

@Deanetta

Already one response saying 'how could you work with such TERFs?' Just let them get on with it. Every time they open their mouths they do our job for us.
I think that one is a parody.
CaraDune · 25/06/2020 12:31

Well, one of the things I've taken from this whole debacle is that people should be free to go about their employment without being cross-examined regarding their ideological purity in totally unrelated political/moral matters.

I personally may think that Maughan is a complete tit on many issues, but he is (by all accounts) a bloody good QC, so if he can get a result on this one, I'm all in favour of using his professional skills.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 25/06/2020 13:40

Is this some sort of misguided attempt at reputational rehab by the fox botherer?

Where’s my popcorn?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 25/06/2020 14:13

I definitely don't want him cancelled by mumsnet or anyone else. I cannot see any reason to want to. I think it is a positively good thing that he wants to partner with mumsnet even though he disagrees with some posters. I know nothing about his other views, but lots of people are (in my view) wrong on trans ideology, but perfectly sensible (or even great) on other issues.

Deanetta · 25/06/2020 14:17

RiotAndAlarum yes another poster pointed it out after I had posted. I'm normally quite good at identifying sarcasm on the internet but clearly failed on this occasion! Lesson learned!

picklemewalnuts · 25/06/2020 15:04

Well, that's exciting.

wellbehavedwomen · 25/06/2020 15:13

Agreed.

If we (rightly) have no patience with cancel culture, then that needs to extend both ways - no? I think he's been a complete tool on this issue, and appalling to Maya Forstater in a range of ways. But this is a hugely important issue, harming a lot of single mothers, and the man's a QC. So I'm all for his supporting Gingerbread and Mumsnet over it.

wellbehavedwomen · 25/06/2020 15:16

@MrsWednesdayteatime that could be it, actually. Remember Boris's peculiar love for buses?

donquixotedelamancha · 25/06/2020 15:36

If we (rightly) have no patience with cancel culture, then that needs to extend both ways - no?

Yes, that- especially on such an important issue.

LouHotel · 25/06/2020 15:42

munches popcorn

It’s a worthwhile campaign, undoubtedly he’s probably going to pull support after a twitter pile on making him look further hostile to women or he will stand by mumsnet - win all round in my book.

nauticant · 25/06/2020 16:18

That would be the case for a woman, or an organisation terrified of attracting the "transphobia" label, but he's a woke bloke and even the bonkers activists know who they had best not attack.

This has been up all day:

3 replies. If you ignore the sarcastic one masquerading as a TRA, there's no criticism.

SerenityNowwwww · 25/06/2020 16:20

Eh? What’s happening? He’s no lover of Mumsnet.

It’s the heat- it’s making people squirrely.
