To those who describe themselves as 'gender-critical feminists' - along with them I decry the use of the expression TERF as a slur - and who oppose the modest work that the Tavistock is able to do given its budgetary constraints, I say: be careful what you wish for.

And my question is this; if those under 18 are not capable of consenting to taking puberty blockers, what does that mean for their ability to consent to having an abortion?
If he wins against the Tavistock will Paul, and the Christian Right, stop there? Really?

so now our access to abortion is being threatened if we dont comply to tra narrative? we are guilty by association? this guy is a piece of work, isnt he?

But i don't the two are equivalent. One is stopping the normal bodily functions with regards puberty on an otherwise healthy individual leading to a life time of medication and surgery.
Whereas abortion is only undertaken to prevent harm e.g pregnancy/ giving birth which is a risky thing to do but particularly for teen girls / under 18's. Plus they have a baby to look after before they may be ready.

Surprised he would equate the two.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/06/2020 20:05

i think hes blocked everyone who disagrees with him Shock

This reads almost like a mafia threat. "Nice abortion rights you have there. It'd be a shame if anything were to happen to them..."

No more abortions for us if we don't do what the fox bludgeoner says!

This is so gross. Asking children to wait until they are adults before they make themselves permanently infertile is not equivalent to forcing teenage girls to give birth against their will.

SarahTancredi · 20/06/2020 20:09

Oh fgs.

Puberty blockers dont tie a girl to their rapist for life. An abortion also doesnt usually ( provided there are not serious complications) stop them from growing up and having a family should they want one in the future.

God they are thick

Enderthedragon · 20/06/2020 20:12

Who is the fox killer?

sashagabadon · 20/06/2020 20:12

He really is a wally

sashagabadon · 20/06/2020 20:15

Jolyon maugham. He is some sort of lawyer that battered a fox to death on boxing day with a baseball bat wearing a kimono and then bragged about it on twitter.

Yes really

TorkTorkBam · 20/06/2020 20:16

The USA has a powerful Christian right.

The UK likes watching Father Ted.

The Tavistock is in the UK.

I am not worried about the Christian right gaining enough power to have abortions banned in the UK. That is a silly notion.

Mermoose · 20/06/2020 20:17

It's strange that Maugham doesn't know that it's established in law that many things a person can consent to are yet considered illegal if they cause injury. Does he really not know this?

"This is a longstanding legal principle. Where actual bodily harm or above is inflicted upon a person with no good reason, in public or private, the consent of the victim is irrelevant."

Mermoose · 20/06/2020 20:18

If anyone is on Twitter and still not blocked by Maugham (tall order, I know) maybe bring his attention to this? Of course, his response will be to block you.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 20/06/2020 20:22

Young adult women are routinely refused sterilisation if requested - because they are deemed to young and will change their mind about infertility.

This has no bearing on abortion rights. What’s the difference?

JM is beneath contempt. Why is he so vocal about this?

Anything to hide JM?

PigeonToe · 20/06/2020 20:22

Surely any court case actually trying to make that argument against abortion would fall apart on day one, because having a baby is so obviously a more life-long, life-changing decision than having an abortion. I say this as someone who has had both an abortion and a baby. I mean it's just so stupid.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 20/06/2020 20:22

*too young

exwhyzed · 20/06/2020 20:23

Well it's not comparable is it.

A better comparison would have been comparing it to the rights of women to be sterilised as and when they wished for whatever reason and him threatening that right might be withdrawn.

Except he can't do that can he because women are already regularly denied the option of being sterilised 'in case they want another child in the future' etc.

I wonder how we have got to the point where more people are fighting for the right to sterilise children than there are for the rights of women not to have unwanted pregnancies.

TorkTorkBam · 20/06/2020 20:31

This is great. He looks a right tit coming out with such nonsense.

I bet he is having to block loads of people today who had not previously publicly commented on this kind of nonsense.

More people hitting peak trans by the minute.

I do hope he tweets more such nonsense.

Binterested · 20/06/2020 20:32

Totally demonstrating his lack of knowledge or empathy for woman and girls. Almost all women and girls who go through abortion do not regret it. That’s why it’s women who campaign for abortion. They know it is almost always a positive in the long run even if it’s bars in the short run (and yes I’ve had one)

Giving up your sex life, having a double mastectomy and giving up your future fertility ? Over my dead body would I allow my teenager to go through that. But if she fell pregnant and strongly strongly encourage her to have an abortion.

Jolyon you are so ignorant of women it’s shocking.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/06/2020 20:38

hes calling keira bell transgender even though shes detransitioned, and hes saying that the filtering process is working 'or even too conservative'

i would say a child in his family is going through this - theres something about his responses here.

Also shows that they really do just think sex is a dick in a hole. Fuck whether that causes pain because they arent developed or have taken drugs which mean orgasm is painful. Fuck even having the mental capacity to consent .

The idea of a mutually fulfilling sex life for reasons other than re producing is clearly beyond them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 20/06/2020 20:38

Paul who? The fox killer can fuck right off with the "nice abortion rights you have there, would be a shame if we had to take them away as punishment for your insubordination" shit.

IagoWithABlackberry · 20/06/2020 20:39

You do wonder how some people have survived to the age they are, nevermind enter respected professions.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/06/2020 20:52

He isn’t even original in his pathetic threats - the America TRAs have been spouting the “omg if you’re saying children shouldn’t be able to consent to mutilation that means the republicans will make abortion illegal” line for a long time Hmm

Voice0fReason · 20/06/2020 22:26

He hates women and girls. He will use anything to attack us and our rights.

IDanielRadcliffe · 20/06/2020 22:37

With this level of thinking, how has he managed to become a QC?

Thelnebriati · 20/06/2020 22:43

It's strange that Maugham doesn't know that it's established in law that many things a person can consent to are yet considered illegal if they cause injury. Does he really not know this?

A lot of misogynistic men have a problem with abortion and at the same time are completely ignorant of the risks of pregnancy.
They see women as ''made for the task'', and can't grasp that an underage girls body is not ready to gestate and give birth, even if she is able to ovulate and menstruate.
I've literally had men argue 'but she's old enough to have periods' as an argument against abortion even for children.

If a girl is too young to consent to sex, she is too young to have a baby.

nauticant · 20/06/2020 22:52

how has he managed to become a QC?

Because he is very capable in a narrow skill set. This got him into a highly privileged world. This is where his narrow capabiliies failed him. He assumed that being in that world made him clever about everything. He fails this test: The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.
