Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Women's feelings are not the point and a woman's voice is a shitty one - feminism according to Marie Claire

"I’m also a ciswoman, which means my feelings are not the point right now. As significant as the franchise has been for me, if I am actually going to be the ally I fancy myself to be, that means I have to consider the damage Rowling (and potentially the entire series) has done to trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people. Being a white ciswoman gives me a voice—like a magical power, but a shitty one, because it's a power others are denied."

I think these young self proclaimed feminists are in for an almighty shock when they get a bit older and realise just exactly how women's voices are responded to.

Sigh.

Oh Cis off Kathleen

midgebabe · 16/06/2020 20:59

Yeah but she does acknowledge that genre none conforming people are not listened to as we should be

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/06/2020 21:03

Female people, your social duty is to be support humans!

Good support humans embrace their subordination and enjoy living for the benefit of their betters.

My God, where have we heard that before over the past couple of millenia? It's like they're trying to create a whole nation of surrendered wives.

Collidascope · 16/06/2020 21:04

I keep hearing that thing about Cho Chang being the only Asian character, but weren't Pavrati and Padma Patil Asian, or am I misremembering...?

Ninkanink · 16/06/2020 21:09

C** is an offensive term.

I am not a subset of something a man has decided he is.

I am a woman.

contactusdeletus · 17/06/2020 07:20

This popped up on my feed this morning. Looks bloody awful. I got great satisfaction out of clicking "hide this story" and "don't show stories from Marie Claire".

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 17/06/2020 07:32

Feminism isn't a franchise.

twoHopes · 17/06/2020 07:44

Oh Kathleen. You don't have a voice because you're a white ciswoman. You have a voice because you are middle class and went to a posh university. You probably also had parents who could support you in entering an industry that offers unpaid internships and insecure employment prospects. Sigh.

TitianaTitsling · 17/06/2020 07:56

I'm just so excited to know I have a magical power now!!! Kathleen's parents must be loaded, well-connected or someone has serious dirt on the publishers (is it Conde Nast still?). As that is the biggest piece of simpering drivel l have read in some time!

Flapjak · 17/06/2020 07:57

When people allege that JKR wrote something that was transphobic, i really wish they would quote the actual sentence/s so we know exactly what they are referring to in particular that they find so offensive. Stating biological facts or making a case for womens protected spaces is not transphobic, sex is still a protected characteristic!

NotTerfNorCis · 17/06/2020 08:00

Re Cho Chang's name, many of the names Rowling used were comical or alliterative. It's part of the HP world.

EverardDigby · 17/06/2020 08:01

This is what I was going to say, but better! I have a lot of class rage at the moment when middle class women speak on our behalf.

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 17/06/2020 08:02

Collidascope

There are no non-white people in the Potterverse!

Oh, except Cho. But she doesn’t count cos her name is sooooooooo stereotypically Chinese it’s terribly racist.

Oh, and the Patel twins. Uh, and Dean Thomas. Oh! And Angelina Johnson. And Blaize Zabini. And Kingsley Shacklebolt. And the leader of the MACUSA in Fantastic Beasts. And umm... Hermione.

RuffleCrow · 17/06/2020 08:06

Shall we email them a piece of our minds? Demand reciepts for the 'transphobic' allegations?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/06/2020 08:08

Nice description of Rowling as 'her Karen-self'Hmm. Yes, that sort of casual misogynist, ageist slur does demonstrate quite a shitty sort of voice.

ChattyLion · 17/06/2020 08:09

Exactly, reality matters very greatly! We always need to be free to tell the truth otherwise we are fucked as a society. And especially we have to be able to name reality here because we need to be able to point out injustices against women (and children, in the case of this particular political dogma)

Express your ‘gender’ however you want, nothing wrong with not confirming to harmful stereotypes - but don’t expect others to suspend reality for your benefit and to ignore harms that doing this will cause to others (like having men in womens spaces. prisons, sports, taking up women’s opportunities etc.) It’s so selfish to want that. Just no.

TheMarzipanDildo · 17/06/2020 08:15

That was somehow simultaneously self congratulatory and

TheMarzipanDildo · 17/06/2020 08:15

...and incredibly masochistic.

WinnieWonder · 17/06/2020 08:17

Blimey JK is getting it in the neck right now. So ridiculous.

Flapjak · 17/06/2020 08:19

It is dripping with internalised misogyny

TheThirdPigWasTooClever · 17/06/2020 08:20

Okay, so you’d stand with the women who said ‘women don’t really need the vote’.

MsTSwift · 17/06/2020 08:21

My god I am embarrassed for her. That was an utterly cringeworthy read

KaronAVyrus · 17/06/2020 08:23

It’s a mystery why women have largely given up reading magazines.

zanahoria · 17/06/2020 08:23

The Patel twins are obviously Asian, I always get confused and think that one is called Pritti.

It is a bit odd to get all worked up about minority representation and then just forget people.

Flapjak · 17/06/2020 08:24

I just wonder how far they will go with the labels, curent emphasis being white and cis, surely its not correctly checking your privelige to not acknowledge being white, cis able bodied, middle class heterosexual woman
