Starts of so nicely I thought it would be a very fair and balanced article and in part it is trying.... good on them for that.
However they say:
"It’s worth remembering that surgical regret is proportionately very low amongst gender affirmation outpatients and research suggesting otherwise has been broadly disproven."
But earlier they use a study "Long-Term Follow-Up of Transsexual Persons Undergoing Sex Reassignment Surgery: Cohort Study in Sweden" on another point ... this study 'suggests' surgical regret to me, or at least shows surgery leads to worse mental health outcomes (which should be regreted):
"Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group."
The comment that references this article (which they suggest has been disproven) says: "This research shows that trans women are no more a threat to women than other cisgender women." No it doesn't. They link to an article that actually says transwomen retain the crime rate of men. I'm assuming men are more of a threat to women than women statistically (please correct me if i'm wrong). The study says:
"Second, regarding any crime, male-to-females had a significantly increased risk for crime compared to female controls (aHR 6.6; 95% CI 4.1–10.8) but not compared to males (aHR 0.8; 95% CI 0.5–1.2). This indicates that they retained a male pattern regarding criminality."
Let's be clear that criminals (male or female, trans or non-trans) are the exception, not the rule and it may well be that transwomen are discriminated in the courts. I don't think trans men / women are generally anything but kind decent people who have genuine grievances. It's just a shame Mermaids use "evidence" that fundementally disagrees with their own points.
I'm with JKR. I have some minor criticisms of some of her comments but she's not the pope - she's had way too much grief and over-analysis over her essay, which to me is more about derogatory uses of 'TERF' and the curtailment of open debate.
