Don't know if people had seen this.

Philip Pullman
OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/06/2020 14:28

I had seen that - I can't work out if he is a straw in the wind, or just incapable of critical thought and independent research.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/06/2020 14:30

He keeps popping up to insist he doesn't understand what's going on. Just be quiet, Philip, if you haven't got anything useful to say, who needs to know how BAFFLED you are?!

ValancyRedfern · 11/06/2020 14:30

He can't seem to make his mind up on anything. He changes his view constantly and keeps whining how difficult and confusing it all is.

picklemewalnuts · 11/06/2020 14:35

He's not a voice I'm keen on, to be honest. A bit bilious!

SquirrelInTheOak · 11/06/2020 14:36

He comes across as very impressionable.

WarmthAndDepth · 11/06/2020 14:36

I just saw this and came over to check if anyone else is on it.
Rachel Rooney has just posted for clarification (wants to hug Rachel).

Collidascope · 11/06/2020 14:36

I find him disingenuous. I imagine he's one of the men who stacks the dishwasher badly so he doesn't get asked to do it again.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/06/2020 14:37

Yes, exactly, Collidascope. Learned helplessness. We've no time for that shit right now.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 11/06/2020 14:39

That’s some persona he’s got going there; the vague writer with his arch pig bladder joke. Playing the intellectual too lofty for this nonsense until he decides which side is winning the battle.

happydappy2 · 11/06/2020 14:49

Gutted as I love his books, he must see what’s going on & just be too afraid to speak up for women.

BaronessFloralBunting · 11/06/2020 14:52

As I've said before,I'm quite enjoying the 'gender' reverse of Rowling being forthright, clear and resolute, and Pullman repeatedly simpering about how confusing it all is and how everyone is mean to him.

DiscontentedWoman · 11/06/2020 14:53

I'm struggling to articulate how I view Pullman at the moment, other than he is an utter tit

RoyalCorgi · 11/06/2020 14:53

Why doesn't he just read JK Rowling's post on her website? Everything he needs to know is there, clearly explained.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 11/06/2020 14:56

Exactly

And this ^^
Collidascope · 11/06/2020 15:01

The "people jumping out to hit him with sticks" thing is strange, and implies the only place he's tried to learn on is Twitter or some very aggressive forums where he went and asked questions. The last place I'd go if I wanted educating on a completely new matter would be Twitter...
Most of us would just read forums, articles, books. The fact that he's had to make it into an interactive thing where everyone knows he's trying to learn is a bit performative isn't it? Especially contrasted with JK who did her fucking research for about 3 years from all manner of sources before speaking out.

Collidascope · 11/06/2020 15:04

In fact, I don't know if anyone follows Kate Long on Twitter but it reminds me of that. She posts vintage magazine articles and extracts from books and then some tosser who's thought about the matter for, oh, a good 10 seconds, will come and tell her she's wrong and an idiot.
That feels like what a lot of men are doing here.

Doyoumind · 11/06/2020 15:07

He's been farting around on the fence and one minute says something to back up JKR and the next something negative.

At the end of the day, it's a case of privileged man doesn't understand women's rights shocker.

BentBastard · 11/06/2020 15:07

Pullman originally came down on TWAW side IIRC but I suspect that Rowlings recent tweets have given him just a tiny hint of a niggle in the back of his mind that he might be on the "wrong side" so the "confusion" now is place holding until he can work out exactly where the chips will land.

That's my take anyway.

QuarantineDream · 11/06/2020 15:08

Love some of the descriptions of him on here Grin He's probably just jealous HP's so much more successful than NL.

Shedbuilder · 11/06/2020 15:11

Philip, the LGB Alliance is a group of ordinary lesbian, gay and bisexual people who feel they have been abandoned by Stonewall in its rush to adopt transgender ideology without consulting its core constituents.

Transgender ideology is homophobic. It says that a man with a penis can self-identify as a woman and then legitimately expect to have sex with lesbians — and that lesbians who say no are transphobic.

LGB people are united by their experience of homophobia. They have very little in common with Transgender people. Transgender people have exactly the same rights as you and me. That wasn't true for LGB people who for years couldn't marry and didn't have the right to be served in shops or accommodated in hotels. I urge you to read the relatively limited statements the LGB Alliance have issued and find a single thing that could be described as hate.

By agreeing with someone who's called them a hate group you've just slid over to the wrong side of history. I for one will never hear your name again without thinking, 'Ah, yes, Philip Pullman who said a group of lesbian, gay and bi people fighting homophobia was a hate group.'

nauticant · 11/06/2020 15:13

It's instructive to read through the contrary responses to Pullman and compare them with the contrary responses to JKR:

"We think you've got this wrong" vs "Die you fucking hag CUNT".

Goosefoot · 11/06/2020 15:24

I don't doubt he was taken aback by the Twitter response when he first tweeted on this topic.

But he's kind of always been a tit.

RoyalCorgi · 11/06/2020 15:28

But he's kind of always been a tit.

I've always faintly disliked him for no obvious reason except that he always seemed a bit too pleased with himself. Which is probably unfair. So it is kind of gratifying to know that I was right all along.

nauticant · 11/06/2020 15:31

Having looked at Pullman's tweets I see this:

mobile.twitter.com/PhilipPullman/status/1270639018997362688

for which he got a firm telling off so one day later he posts this:

mobile.twitter.com/PhilipPullman/status/1271051409077743616

That's one of the most craven responses I've seen. At least Radcliffe and co have a set of beliefs they're sticking to.
