Hi all,

Just a quick thought for those of us with ancient, well-loved, falling-apart copies of the Harry Potter series in our homes: I'm thinking of treating my dcs to a brand new box set of the books. Think it might send a strong message to her publishers etc if lots of us did similar. Not sure what i'll do with the old ones - have charity shops reopened? Or maybe I'll keep them for emergencies.

I'm ordering a set for DD - my copies are a bit tired

Alwayslearningthings · 10/06/2020 13:07

Hmm...I have been looking at getting the illustrated versions for my girls (they’re for me really, under the guise that they’re for them. Grin )

LouHotel · 10/06/2020 13:08

Well mine our special editions as I queued for them preens but I always wanted the really posh looking ones that had a velvet covering.

Beetle and the Bard proceeds go to Lumos so that’s a good buy.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/06/2020 13:10

I’m wondering if the dafties will target Primark as they have a large heart potter section in the one near my office.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2020 13:11

DD already has the HP box set, are her Robert Galbraith books any good?

LouHotel · 10/06/2020 13:12

@Lordfrontpaw no they won’t, that’s why they are trying to distinguish Harry Potter from the author so they can keep their Hogwarts Crest bedspreads.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2020 13:13

And LEGO group of course who make a killing from the HP theme

Lordfrontpaw · 10/06/2020 15:19

But I thought Harry Potter had literally destroyed people’s childhoods?

Oh well - my niece and her husband are massive HP fans. I wonder if they’d like a nice fancy set of the books for their anniversary?

mightymalties · 10/06/2020 15:24

MinaLima will be releasing a gorgeous new edition of The Philosopher's Stone in October: minalima.com/product/harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone-signed-copy/

It's illustrated throughout, and has interactive elements (similar to the fairy tale/children's book series). MinaLima worked on the design concepts for the movies, and have LOTS of HP merchandise on offer, in case you were looking Wink

EggbertHeartsTina · 10/06/2020 15:28

@Whatsnewpussyhat the Robert Galbraith books are BRILLIANT. I’m not into crime literature usually but her character development is fantastic (like HP really).

TheShoesa · 10/06/2020 15:28

Whatsnewpussyhat I bought my first Galbraith book after the #IStandWithMaya backlash and enjoyed it so much I bought the remaining available books in the Strike series and have book 5 on pre order.

I found them unputdownable (if that's even a word), although some of the imagery is a bit grim in places.

I'm not a Potter fan but have read them with my children

TheShoesa · 10/06/2020 15:31

Eggbert I'm not usually into crime literature either, but loved these

LaneBoy · 10/06/2020 15:32

Ah screw it I’ve not bothered with the Galbraith books as I’m not really into crime fiction but why the hell not. I did love the casual vacancy. It’s going on my kindle list.

PetraDelphiki · 10/06/2020 15:34

Do authors do better out of kindle or paper books?

LaneBoy · 10/06/2020 15:35

Oh good point. Not sure! I was wondering about audible too.

Bluebooby · 10/06/2020 15:36

I've decided that the best way to show my appreciation is to donate to Lumos. I do want to get a new Harry Potter book set as mine are quite worn.

LaneBoy · 10/06/2020 15:39

I have always enjoyed her tweets responding to people burning/boycotting though. She’s funny as well as clever and brave :o

I'm going to buy from Lumos and donate.

Good idea OP x

My favourite comment from the Times article today was :
"Perhaps Radcliffe shoukd refund all the money he made acting in the Harry Potter films if he wants to disassociate from the author instead of making cost free media comments"

Mollyollydolly · 10/06/2020 16:10

I've ordered a couple of the Jim Kay Harry Potters this week The illustrations are stunning. A treat for me and a wee bit of support for JK.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2020 16:46

The MinaLima book is lovely.

I now also want the Black Family wallpaper for my downstairs loo!

I shall get the Galbraith books then. Horror/crime is my usual go to anyway.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2020 16:54

DP bought me this big, illustrated hard back a while ago.
I like it as it's more reference book than story and the drawings/paintings are beautiful.

I've been offered a lend of the fourth Strike book but I'm going to go buy the Kindle version now.

They are brilliant, btw.

MaleficentsCrow · 10/06/2020 17:27

Lordfrontpaw I laugh out loud at the thought of them sobbing in to their HP duvet covers and the hundreds/thousands of pounds they gave her 😂😂 makes my day, honestly.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/06/2020 17:29

Oh no - they adore her. I’m the old misery who was never keen on the books and didn’t every buy them by HP stuff - until now.
