Do you think JK knew what would happen?

She's hinted her views before, but this is the most clearly outspoken she has been. The backlash has been pretty awful tbh. I'm not sure I 100% agree with everything she is saying, but I do not like how she has been treated. Why the world is acting like she has made some 'Trump-like' statement I dont know. Perhaps because being trans is the most recent trending vulnerable group to gain support and influence? So it's a very risky thing to talk about? The fact it can't even be discussed is pretty sad.

I wonder if she realised this would happen. Do you think she had higher hopes that some other admirable high profile names would come to her aid, or at least have a healthy debate? Does she know people who have let her down? Perhaps they realised last minute that it was just too risky a move here's looking at you Dan Radcliffe. I can almost see him sending her a private message "Sorry Jo, really can't do this right now! I'm too young and I need the money from my next woke gig!" Or has he really truly lost touch with her and decided to break ties? Or did she really just decide throw it out there and hope for the best?

A part of me thinks she knew it all along. She is very good at standing out from the crowd. She had had incredible lows in her life. Even if she spends the foreseeable future in a downward disgrace, she has publicly planted a seed and now the initial heat is over people are starting to talk. The BBC even has an article on the Dan Rad response and links to articles about gender critical and what this means for women. I think they are being surprisingly unbiased actually.

The future starts here?

I just hope this doesn't scar her too much.

This is what they support...FGM not allowed to say that they are female

Saltovinegar · 10/06/2020 07:30

Articles regarding DR have gone from the BBC and Daily Mail. Is that because there are more important stories or has there been legal action I wonder.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 10/06/2020 07:51

I was reading the Ickabog last night.

Canny timing to state a biological truth whilst publishing instalments of a book about truth.

Clever woman.

Lamahaha · 10/06/2020 08:17

At the end of the day, she has nothing to lose. Even if she lost fans or deals...she's not exactly desperate for more money. So she can say what she wants as she doesn't need to be make anymore money.

But she will make more money even without writing a single word more. Her books will continue to earn millions in royalties day after day even beyond her death.

I just think that JK will clearly have been expecting that, so will cope with it ok. OP mentioned something about publishers refusing to work with her and organisations refusing to be associated with her. Has that happened?

This absolutely won't happen. Publishers are not moral arbiters. They don't listen to activists. They are out to make money and JK us the biggest money-maker on earth.

Taswama · 10/06/2020 08:40

Zoe Ball was praising DR on R2 this morning. Urggh.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/06/2020 08:41

She’s a fool. Do write to the station though...

Lamahaha · 10/06/2020 08:41

@CaraDune

The Times has comments open... and they are not pro Daniel. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
But it's a pity it's behind a paywall, because the average reader will not be able to read the comments. The comments are the most revealing part of the article. This is modern journalism for you; when the public has more accurate information than the actual journalist!
TorkTorkBam · 10/06/2020 08:52

Most popular comment is this one

Daniel Radcliffe has the absolute right to express his opinion. That right is, quite correctly, enshrined in law. In this case his opinion is that transwomen are women.
His right to express his opinion does not extend to the right to have his opinion taken equally seriously as others. It is not the right to insist that his opinion is on at least an equal footing with others.
'Transwomen' are men. One cannot change sex. Radcliffe is wrong.
So, I thank him for his opinion, agree to his right to express it, and dismiss it completely as being factually incorrect.

FantaOra · 10/06/2020 09:01

That Independent article!! There's a quote from an allegedly brilliant activist saying that no flower ever said "I am male" therefore sex is a human construct.

How do people this stupid get through life? 🤔 If that's coming from a brilliant mind then all I can do is fall about laughing at the whole ridiculous lot of them.

My only sadness is for parents losing their children to this pathetic mutilation trend.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/06/2020 09:10

It’s the Indy though! The Indy... not a newspaper!

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 10/06/2020 09:13

My favourite Times comment was:

“Too much time under the stairs.”

FreeKitties · 10/06/2020 09:18

I notice the good doctor has been very quiet on this, and he would love the chance to denounce JKR as a witch, you would think that by being silenced by someone more powerful than he would make him think what daily life is like for women, but of course he won’t, he will just double down on his hatred of women even more.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 10/06/2020 09:19

Has anyone seen this thread about Harry Potter and JK Rowling by @ ashermaj on twitter?

mobile.twitter.com/ashermaj/status/1270547754096431105

The best response to the criticism of Rowling I've seen.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/06/2020 09:25

The fascism of purity politics. Excellent point, it's so strong throughout JK's work.

This lot shouting abuse and burn the witch are Umbridge, not the Order of the Phoenix.

Heygirlheyboy · 10/06/2020 09:26

I hope she looks at the number of likes and the lack of brainpower of the 'So if I had a hysterectomy am I not a woman?' crowd.

I would imagine the blue ticks that have gone against her have annoyed though.

Heygirlheyboy · 10/06/2020 09:27

And I hope she sent DR a 'Don't ever dream of apologising for me' text!

littlbrowndog · 10/06/2020 09:32

Zoe ball !! Her show is so awful. I had to stop listening to it. Glad I did as wouldn’t wan5 to have heard her wittering on this

AsTreesWalking · 10/06/2020 09:32

Seriously considering going back on Twitter just to follow Jana Cornell.

BringbackLang · 10/06/2020 09:37

I accidentally posted this on another thread but thought I'd post it here.

*Yes she knew and she still did it anyway.

Courage called and she stood up. *
*
I note that if you type in #weaslylittlegit sorry #danielradcliffe an emoji appears that vaguely looks like him with a crown on his head. Never be in any doubt that Twitter hates woman.*

George Takei has declared that TWAW. Who do you think you are George? How dare you. Woman is not yours to give away.

Sandybval · 10/06/2020 09:37

Oh absolutely, which makes the fact that she still chose to stand up for women even more admirable. Thank you JKR.

AsTreesWalking · 10/06/2020 09:38

That Twitter comment by @ashermaj is perfect. Perfect.
Reminds me of a conversation I had at school about The Hunger Games - you might like to think you are Catniss, dear GB schoolgirl, but we are The Capitol.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 10/06/2020 10:02

Yes I think she knew & she knows - how many tens of thousands who knew nothing about any of this are checking her feed for Ikabog/Ikabog pictures & reading the top of her timeline.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 10/06/2020 10:03

*Ickabog

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2020 10:10

It's so bloody easy for men to spout the TWAW line isn't it. Zero effect on them but all the glory of being woke.

RevIMJolly · 10/06/2020 10:20

Re Zoe Ball - I think she is a talented broadcaster but I wouldn’t exactly hold her up to my children as a great arbiter of moral values, or critical thinking.

One thing that struck me though is how many celebrities are keeping their mouths firmly shut on this one. For every Daniel Radcliffe there are 20 BAFTA/ Oscar winners who are not supporting it.
Even in the Potter universe, a virtual who’s who of the British acting establishment, there has not been an outpouring support for Daniel.

I like Sarah Paulson’s work, but she’s no Tom Hanks. If the finest the acting community has is Jameela Jamil then that’s not too impressive.

And actually, why would we care what actor’s think? Some are obviously brilliant thinkers, but some are thick as mince.

Ditto the press, which respectable journalists have called for JKR to be burned as a witch? Owen Jones?

And other authors; Pullman fudged it, but where are the other greats of children’s literature? Or popular fiction?

Does Hilary Mantel think that sex is not a thing? Frankly, I don’t think she should be forced to say either way, but the fact that JKR has not been roundly condemned by the vast majority of big thinkers speaks volumes.

I think that most famous people who have put the boot in are mediocre at best. But they make a lot of noise.
