Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

I deplore that thing she said about being middle aged. Loserish. I would have expected better of a women of her achievements.

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 11:10

MorganKitten, truly a mic drop moment there. 🤣

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 11:12

As ever, a brilliant post from Datun.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 11:12

She’s an awful women

I know she's multi talented but that's no reason to go around accusing her of being multiple people!

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 11:13

JK used the LGBTQ community when it suited her and she made money off of it, and goes against things she wrote about. She’s an awful women and lies each time she is is vile and says it’s down to being ‘middle age’.

Are you going to expand on any of that, or actually address her points?

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 11:17

Dances I was speechless (and ashamed of her) when she wrote me that, especially knowing how much DGS1 loves HP. Not sure how she has explained this to him as I haven't seen her since before lockdown. Arguing through text/wattsapp etc is difficult to say the least.

WorryWartOne · 09/06/2020 11:18

Disgusted by Daniel’s words, I always took him for a down-to-earth chap who didn’t take himself too seriously.

I won’t abide any man telling me what a women is and how they should feel (let alone apologising for the most successful woman in modern history, who managed to overcome several of the usual barriers single mothers face to reap that hard-earned success).

I refuse to support Daniel Radcliffe in any of his future endeavours, as a woman and a mother, and a mother to a daughter who will not be taught this patriarchal claptrap. I refuse to spend my money, which no doubt Daniel and his agents do not wish to receive from my bigoted hands, on any more of his works, so I will never again watch a film or programme that is associated with him in any way, or buy a magazine or book with an obvious monetary association.

We need to hit people like this where it hurts. Daniel et al are dreaming if they think the bottom line for Hollywood execs is Trans Rights and fluffy inclusion. It’s all about cold, hard cash and we need to exploit this in the same way that Hollywood are exploiting LGBT people by handing them woke platitudes and then watching them open their purses.

If you really care about this, stop funding hate against women, and if possible, make your intention to do so known on social media.

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 11:19

Crystaltree she is 52 and perhaps views change in 'middle age'? I'm 72 so I can see why they might.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 11:20
@dickkerrladies actually i think it was because she defined women as people who menstruate. it was somewhat thoughtless as lots of women born women don't menstruate for hormonal reasons so unfortunately she caused irritation for that reason too.
No. She defined People who Menstruate as Women. That's quite a different argument. because they are, every one of them.

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 11:21

He would have no career if it wasn't for her determination and wisdom. He needs to stfu and learn to listen to people who have some life experience beyond being a (male) luvvie.

RoyalCorgi · 09/06/2020 11:22

The more I think about it, the more nuts I think this is. What JKR wrote was so very very mild. It really was. No attacks on trans people at all. Just stating that only women could have periods, and even that was expressed in a humorous way.

Why are all these high-profile lunatics pretending that what she said was terrible and bigoted and transphobic? Did they actually read it? Or are they just jumping on the bandwagon as an easy way to signal virtue.

Those are rhetorical questions. We know the answer.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 09/06/2020 11:22

JK used the LGBTQ community when it suited her and she made money off of it, and goes against things she wrote about. She’s an awful women and lies each time she is is vile and says it’s down to being ‘middle age’.

Nice try. Need to develop your argument further and would benefit from a more critical reading of your sources.

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 11:24

I also wonder if there isn't some classic male jealousy going on that's finally finding an outlet. She's the creator, the visionary - he, frankly could have been any geeky kid chosen for a role she created.

Floisme · 09/06/2020 11:25

I cannot believe there are people on here still trying to argue that JKR defined women as people who menstruate. It has been repeatedly pointed out that she did not.

CleanandJerk · 09/06/2020 11:25

I dont even get his reply. JK pointed out that people that menstruating are women. But trans women are women, as Daniel says, so he's agreeing? She's not excluding any woman.
(I find this whole debate somewhat ironic after listening to two separate debates on covid 19 and sex).

Crystaltree · 09/06/2020 11:28

I wanted to add another example to the ones I gave above about cultual appropriation. It might have sounded like I meant that women's culture was only about biological milestones. Another example is the trans pressure on the Guides organisation. Background: the Scouts is now for any gender, and the Scouts and Guides offer broadly similar kinds of activities. The difference is that Guides is a female space and has a unique culture and traditions that are different to the Scouts. So why the trans pressure to join the Guides as leaders, and allow boys who call themselves girls to join? Not because of the activities themselves presumably, but a desire to 'put on' the culture. Furthermore, to not allow the Guides culture to continue without trans input and 'improvement'.

User1123788363 · 09/06/2020 11:28

Imagine a white man who decided he was black and wanted to be acknowledged as a black man. A real black man then questions and disagree with this. Then I, a white woman, come along and say no, the white man is a black man and I’m apologising on behalf of the real black man who said you were white.

Fucking outrageous.

Aesopfable · 09/06/2020 11:29

Daniel has probably barely even read what she wrote - he has just been listening to what trans people (and Trevor whoever that is) tell him. Certainly not engaged his brain.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 11:29

Any man who supports the TWAW mantra, is saying that it is perfectly fine for my teenage daughters to have to change for swimming etc ,alongside an adult with a penis.
If Daniel baldly stated that fact , I imagine there would be less support for him. It would make him sound creepy. It would make people wonder why adults with penises want to be in with girls.
Daniel , with his “all you need is love” stuff, has nicely glossed over, probably not even thought about, what this means in reality for girls.
I wonder how he will feel if he has a daughter ?
Frankly any person with a penis wanting to change with young girls needs looking at more closely. This fact has also escaped Daniel, a heterosexual , childless man with nothing to lose here. I imagine he would swiftly leave a changing room if there were teenage girls in there, so what the hell is he thinking ?

BashStreetKid · 09/06/2020 11:30

@pachyderm

Yes. I don't really believe Jan Morris is a woman, considering James Morris was a married father of four in his fifties when he decided to become Jan. I think before this demented cult took hold, I might have been polite and pretended I did but not now.
Actually in the 30s when at the point of starting transitioning, at a time when that was incredibly difficult. But don't let the facts get in the way.
BatShite · 09/06/2020 11:30

His 'statement' has fuck all to do with what she said to start with? Like many of the 'replies'. Mantras, not answers.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 09/06/2020 11:31

He loves HP. She is taking all the HP books away from him now!

Oh thats just awful...so sorry sunshine

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 11:32

I refuse to support Daniel Radcliffe in any of his future endeavours

I think he is a twit, but I don't really care what he says. Thousands of actors have worked on productions of JK Rowling's work. I don't expect them to hold any particular views. He isn't the first actor to say something stupid.

On the other hand if people start trying to censor JK Rowling's because she defends women's rights, I will be on the streets.

Crystaltree · 09/06/2020 11:33

She is taking all the HP books away from him now!
but will she still let him watch the films, since they star the 'role model' DR? Confused

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 09/06/2020 11:33

I agree completely merry
