Mermaids under attack on twitter

So, it appears they have been turned on...

Mermaids is the most well-known UK trans charity but it's led by and pretty much entirely run by white cis people 'on behalf' of trans people. They've not a good record of listening to trans voices, let alone censoring them, and they doubled down on working with the police.

Here’s a screenshot from that now deleted blogpost. (White) Trans organisations, of which Mermaids is just one, have a lot of work to do undoing their own histories of collaboration with the police state before they can claim to stand with Black Lives Matter

As both a lesbian and a trans person, lemme just say, FUCK MERMAIDS

How much of the £211,269 spent on wages and salaries in 2018-19 went to Black trans people? How much to cis white people? How much this year?
How much are you pledging in direct support of Black trans people and anti-racism projects they direct?

Interesting.
Spotted Ada in there - long time no see.

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/06/2020 16:39

This political movement has this problem - no one will ever be pure enough, correct enough, they turn on everyone sooner or later in the ever inward drive to identify fault and expel it, in part as a demonstration of 'I'm better and more virtuous than you'. Aggressive, angry rejection and belief that when you get rid of that or sort out this, things will be right at last. And that it's ok to treat people this way once you've identified a fault that you can call unacceptable.

In the end no one's left standing. First they came for the.... etc etc. There's pathology there.

BlueBooby · 04/06/2020 16:39

What did mermaids do with the police? I can find things online about them giving the police gender identity training, is that what it is?

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/06/2020 16:41

Also the whole splitting thing. Something or someone is all good or all bad. They can have been all good but the second they are perceived as bad then they're all bad, everything they've ever done has been bad and what was once interpreted as good was malicious misleading on their part. Once put in the bad box they are shunned and cannot be forgiven.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/06/2020 17:10

The joy of purity spirals...

You have to have a heart of stone not to laugh 😆

JellySlice · 04/06/2020 17:16

It's like they're locked into believing they have to speak for us rather than letting us speak ourselves.

Oh, like transwomen speak for women?

Hmm
BlackForestCake · 04/06/2020 17:22

There's a section of this milieu who imagine themselves to be anarchists and are therefore hostile to the police in general. Don't want them at Pride etc.

It will be the "training" yeah. They are not going to stop doing that as long as the police are stupid enough to keep paying for it.

Apollo440 · 04/06/2020 17:28

They really are eating themselves. The whole illogical edifice is collapsing in on itself.

DickKerrLadies · 04/06/2020 17:28

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. It's often been said on here that nothing but total capitulation is good enough - it doesn't matter how supportive you think you are.

Aesopfable · 04/06/2020 17:48

I think it would be a great idea for mermaids to be led by anarchist transwomen who are repelled by anything to do with The State.

Aesopfable · 04/06/2020 18:32

Also good to garner the support of funders by taking money granted for one cause and giving it to another unrelated cause.

PermanentTemporary · 04/06/2020 19:00

To find myself feeling that Mermaids are being unfairly attacked is a strange sensation. But the entire premise of the organisation is so flawed. Agree with the 'splitting' analysis - also Mermaids is essentially a parents' organisation which is always going to be difficult for people with a difficult relationship with their own parents to deal with. Especially given that Mermaids present themselves as being for kids/families.

Kantastic · 04/06/2020 19:44

hahahahahahahahahaha

Imagine the embarrassment of their celeb supporters. They traded their integrity for woke points and now the woke points aren't valid any more. Awful. Sad

DidoLamenting · 04/06/2020 20:08

Setting aside any personal views posters might have about Mermaids and Susie Green they are a charity set up to help a small minority of people who are different and who may be obviously different and therefore vulnerable and therefore potentially at risk of being attacked or bullied.

There's nothing wrong with such a charity liaising with the police for guidance. Nothing at all.

DidoLamenting · 04/06/2020 20:18

If you click through the twitter feed there is a long discussion about suitable anti- police chants to be used at Pride.

Bottoms, tops , we all hate cops seems to be the winner.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/06/2020 20:22

It's interesting, on the one hand you have TRAs who are all abolish the police, on the other you have TRAs who are relying heavily on the police to check people's thinking etc

There is when the police start paying for the charity in question to train them on pseudoscientific rubbish and wilfully misinterpretations of the law. When the police start prioritising that group over other oppressed groups. When they become a De facto private force checking on the thinking and threatening others who do not believe in the belief system promulgated by the said charity.

DidoLamenting · 04/06/2020 20:41

You have not quite taken my point.

If one takes Mermaids at Mermaids' own face value there is nothing wrong with Mermaids speaking to the police.

The wrath and ire of the twitterers complaining about Mermaids speaking to the police is , if one accepts Mermaids at face value, completely wrong.

Lordfrontpaw · 04/06/2020 20:48

It just shows you that these people are like piranhas - they will bite anyone (for a laugh). Still...

Kantastic · 04/06/2020 21:06

It's interesting, on the one hand you have TRAs who are all abolish the police, on the other you have TRAs who are relying heavily on the police to check people's thinking etc

I think only the unparalleled capacity for doublethink that trans activists have, has saved them from imploding about this before now. I witnessed an online conversation with a bunch of TRAs discussing the existence of We Are Fair Cop. They took it as evidence that cops are TERFs.

Lordfrontpaw · 04/06/2020 21:08

I wonder if they will start attacking their sponsors and demanding they withdraw. Now that would be a turn of events.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 04/06/2020 21:11

Turn on Stonewall next.

Oh, please turn on Stonewall next.

ahumanfemale · 04/06/2020 21:27

Empress oh yes please! An attack on Stonewall would just be wonderful to watch. I guess though that Stonewall is so obsessed with ticking diversity boxes that it'll be unlikely to be a target...although I do recall a majority of white faces in its photos... Grin

I love the idea that they might start attacking Mermaids' sponsors. Yes please to that too. If I wasn't so exhausted from lockdown I'd almost be tempted to give a helping hand to get that ball rolling myself!

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 04/06/2020 22:47

Well, yes, I actually agree with this point. Mermaids is run by people without the lived experience one would expect.
