Mermaids under attack on twitter

So, it appears they have been turned on...

Mermaids is the most well-known UK trans charity but it's led by and pretty much entirely run by white cis people 'on behalf' of trans people. They've not a good record of listening to trans voices, let alone censoring them, and they doubled down on working with the police.

Here’s a screenshot from that now deleted blogpost. (White) Trans organisations, of which Mermaids is just one, have a lot of work to do undoing their own histories of collaboration with the police state before they can claim to stand with Black Lives Matter

As both a lesbian and a trans person, lemme just say, FUCK MERMAIDS

How much of the £211,269 spent on wages and salaries in 2018-19 went to Black trans people? How much to cis white people? How much this year?
How much are you pledging in direct support of Black trans people and anti-racism projects they direct?

But if you want it run by people with the relevant lived experience then 80-90% of them should be people who identified as trans pre-adolescence then became comfortable with their sex post-adolescence ie not adult TRAs. Only 10% should be people who transitioned during puberty.

GivesNoFox · 05/06/2020 02:38

Well, if a 'mermaid' is ever at risk of drowning it probably would be in a sea of its own 'woke' orthodoxy.

I do have to say though, the fact that TRA's want to be in charge of an organisation that gives them the authority to 'guide' the families of alleged 'trans-kids' send a chill down my spine. Even a person who is not aware of the Trans/GC issue in society would only have to look at most TRA's and see that these people are not in any position or even have any intention of treating kids in an unbiased manner.

bettybeans · 05/06/2020 03:10

I don't buy into the idea that all adult trans people who might support Mermaids would also advocate for kids and teens to medically, chemically or ultimately surgically transition. I know for a fact that isn't the case, and I haven't even gone out of my way to determine it, so they must know it too.

I think, like Stonewall, Mermaids grew v fast in £ sense, built some superficial trans support structure, and took in a heap of funding, but the natural process of such things and high profile now means they're under way more scrutiny. Scrutiny they don't welcome, and they're failing. Those running it have questionable personal objectives and they open themselves to fit person tests when they are shameless about activities such as misrepresenting key legislation like the Equality Act.

Mermaids is the most well-known UK trans charity but it's led by and pretty much entirely run by white cis people 'on behalf' of trans people.

That person, perhaps intentionally, is missing the point of mermaids.

It's a charity for families with 'trans children'. The parents who use it want to see 'normal' families like their own, who have experienced the same concerns and issues, not politicised adults adults with a different agenda.

Swamping the charity with trans adults and removing parents, is guaranteed to scare families away. Maybe that's the intention - take over a well known brand?

Ooh I do so hope that some of these people start writing angry tweets/emails to Starbucks et al.

Another new word to add to the ever expanding list of ’WTAF are you waffling on about?’ transmisogynoir Just in case you weren’t rolling your eyes far enough back. 🙄

Ah well never mind.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying mermaids getting some of their own medicine, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out, but why do people post things like “this you....” as a sort of gotcha, well I know why it’s because they just like to point out transgressions as opposed to actually discussing things, but it really doesn’t do them any favours.

nevermorelenore · 05/06/2020 15:01

Funny, they don't seem to have a problem with cops when they're running to them because someone made a mean tweet.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/06/2020 15:07

I assume that's what they are doing now.

LillianBland · 05/06/2020 15:15

It’s good to know I won’t be reported to the police if I make, what they class as transphobic comments. After all police are ‘scum’ and all that, so they couldn’t possibly ask them for help. I assume all if the trans training brainwashing in the police forces is now going to stop now.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/06/2020 15:20

I used to work for an organisation that had a nursery. Ince in a while I had to go to the office on there to do some work and had to go through the playrooms.

Only once did I ever see a level of utter nonsense bun-fightery in two rooms of 2 ad 3 years olds (new trainset had been delivered and they all wanted to play with it).

Zhuleva · 05/06/2020 15:23

Just when I think the world is irredeemably sad, along comes a small silver lining

MoltenLasagne · 05/06/2020 15:31

I've got to say, whilst the schadenfreude is spectacular, the complaints being levelled at Mermaids are truly absurd.

There are genuine complaints that could be made about Mermaids, from their medicalisation of children, shoddy safeguarding practices and serious issues with data privacy. Instead people are getting het up about them focusing on families as per their remit, working with the police to (supposedly) reduce bullying as per their remit, and predominantly working with white people (with the UK being c. 90% white).

Whatisthisfuckery · 05/06/2020 15:37

My thoughts:
My more charitable thought is that why would Mermaids use its budget for anti-racism projects when that is not their area? It’s like berating the RSPCA for not using their budget for adult literacy classes.

My less charitable thought is that a group of people who like to spout the racist mantra ‘transwomen are women, just like black women,’ really need to have a quick look in the mirror before lecturing others about racism.

Aesopfable · 06/06/2020 10:56

the complaints being levelled at Mermaids are truly absurd

Aesopfable · 06/06/2020 10:59

Posted too too.

the complaints being levelled at Mermaids are truly absurd

That is their norm and why people have been so shocked they have been listened to.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/06/2020 11:01

@Aesopfable

the complaints being levelled at Mermaids are truly absurd
And the complaints levelled by them are...?

They are receiving the same nonsense batshittery that they dole out. Oh the irony (and not exactly unexpected). God alone knows what these folks will get accused of when their turn comes.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/06/2020 11:03

Oh dear, what a sad story.
