GMB statement:
!Date: Monday 25 May 2020
Over the past 48 hours, we’ve received a number of questions on social media and been contacted by members on our series of employment rights Q&As with Mumsnet.
We want to make it clear that GMB supports our trans members, condemns transphobia in the strongest terms and commits to continuing to practically support and campaign alongside the trans community.
During Covid -19 GMB has been working hard to represent our members, and to provide vital additional information for workers on their rights at work, wherever they are. Too many people are currently insecure at work, don’t know their rights or where to turn to and desperately need a union.
What we wanted to do by hosting online advice sessions with Mumsnet, is to reach out to parents, who we know are also facing specific challenges with employment during the pandemic, including pregnancy and childcare. Our sole intention was to help support workers when they need it, as that’s our job.
We are grateful to all those who contacted us with their concerns and of course must listen to our members. We will immediately pause our Mumsnet work, thoroughly review and meaningfully engage with our members and activists, about how best to reach working parents whilst continuing to support all our members.
We are committed to rebuilding trust with our trans members and redoubling our efforts to challenge transphobia and end discrimination in all workplaces and beyond.
Together we are always stronger. Our fight for equality will always be at the heart of what we do."
