I looked through Alison Phipps' Twitter. She seems to have a real thing about white middle class women. Except to me Prof of gender studies would seem the epitome of white middle class occupations

The GMB should be stepping up for working women and mothers, not stepping on them!

I hadn't twigged that the egregious Professor Phipps was at the same university as Professor Kathleen Stock. That must make for some interesting faceoffs in the canteen.

GMB utterly spineless. As so many others have said, no wonder membership is on the decline. I used to belong to another union which appeared to be far more interested in boycotting Israel than grappling with its members' concerns over pay and working conditions, judging by the election addresses.

Yes to a female only union please. One that actually centres and represents the interests and specific needs of those born biologically female without being encumbered by what males think about their interests and needs, agree to, permit, and all the things males want females to do first before addressing those needs of being born female. I see Kiri Tunks has been supporting union membership on WPUK’s Facebook when the GMB fiasco was being discussed (no surprises there) and felt the need to disclose her extensive union credentials as if that would make any difference. When will they understand that the Trades Unions are no friend to women?

I posted this on the AIBU thread, but this is how I would approach it, with the definition of transphobia.

I think that’s the way to take it back to GMB, highlight to those in charge that it’s highly likely they also hold apparent transphobic views without realising it. For example:

Do you know that if you think it’s unfair that this 40 year old middle aged male offspring of a New Zealand millionaire won a weightlifting competition against an 18 year old Samoan woman then you’re transphobic? [Show who Laurel Hubbard is]

Do you know that if you think it’s unfair that these two teenager sprinters are racing against girls and winning then you’re transphobic? [show who Andraya Yearwood and Terri Miller are]

Do you know if you agree with the scientific fact that there are only two sexes then you’re transphobic?

And so on, and so on....

Can't wait to receive my questionnaire to see why I've left the GMB.

I don't know if it's indicative of all regions, but I am aware that the region I am in sends these questionnaires out to see why you have left and when they receive them back, they are viewed as 'oh well, they aren't paying members anymore, so we aren't going to waste our time responding to them'. Waste of fucking paper

Sorry but I really don’t trust them. I hadn’t knows about them re: Glasgow women’s fair pay.

I hope they issue a statement to put this down for once and for all (and that the Princes Trust takes note).

So GMB claims to unionise sex workers but is effectively a front for pimps pushing their decrim agenda. They support self-ID. They refuse to work with Mumsnet. And their General Secretary has just left in disgrace due to sexual assault or harassment allegations.

I'm so glad I'm a member of another union.

A union that caves to a handful of self righteous nobodies on social media is not one I'd trust to stand up for my rights.

At what point do you think that organisations will start to twig that an orchestrated social media pile on doesn't necessarily mean anything?

Do you think they'll ever realise that women are too afraid to speak out on this matter publicly, for fear of attracting vicious threats?

And do you think the phrase 'silent majority' means anything to them?

Anyone who is a GMB member who is resigning, please be sure to write to the General Secretary, the membership department, your branch secretary and your regional secretary. It's important they all understand how their members feel about this. When I left I just told my workplace rep why. He looked totally baffled and out of his depth. I should have also written to the GS and others.

I'm afraid if they're gullible enough to have briefly championed male supremacist activism and told female people to know their place, when five minutes on Twitter should have been enough to think hang on a minute for anyone even halfway intelligent, then they're not a union I'd be giving money to for help in a crisis. Particularly being female and all.

Getting entangled with extremist political activism is not exactly the sign of a good organisation of anything.
